3-manifolds with(out) metrics of nonpositive curvature
In the context of Thurstons geometrisation program we address the question
which compact aspherical 3-manifolds admit Riemannian metrics of nonpositive
curvature. We show that non-geometric Haken manifolds generically, but not
always, admit such metrics. More precisely, we prove that a Haken manifold
with, possibly empty, boundary of zero Euler characteristic admits metrics of
nonpositive curvature if the boundary is non-empty or if at least one atoroidal
component occurs in its canonical topological decomposition. Our arguments are
based on Thurstons Hyperbolisation Theorem. We give examples of closed
graph-manifolds with linear gluing graph and arbitrarily many Seifert
components which do not admit metrics of nonpositive curvature.Comment: 16 page
Innovative Opportunities for Elementary and Middle School Teachers to Maintain Currency in Mathematics and Science: A Community College-School System Partnership
Since 1992 the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College – in response to requests from local school systems – has developed four innovative methods of assisting elementary, secondary and middle school teachers to enhance their content knowledge in science and mathematics, as well as integrate curriculum units for classroom presentation. These methods are based on the assumptions that: - While teachers at this level have fundamental understanding of math and science, if they wish to incorporate new concepts or technologies from these fields, graduate level content courses are generally beyond their background level. - Community College faculty can often provide a bridge that connects advanced content in science and mathematics with the applications that can be adapted to elementary/middle school curriculum. - Presenting content to a mixed audience of teachers from K-8 allows teachers to see how content can be adapted to grade levels above and below. - Content delivery methods must be interactive and must be responsive to the multiple demands on these teachers’ time. This requires flexibility in scheduling and course requirements

A study of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich increment using archival SCUBA data
In a search for evidence of the short wavelength increment in the
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, we have analyzed archival galaxy cluster data
from the Sub-millimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk
Maxwell Telescope, resulting in the most complete pointed survey of clusters at
850 microns to date. SCUBA's 850 microns passband overlaps the peak of the SZ
increment. The sample consists of 44 galaxy clusters in the range 0 < z < 1.3.
Maps of each of the clusters have been made and sources have been extracted; as
an ancillary product we generate the most thorough galaxy cluster point source
list yet from SCUBA. Seventeen of these clusters are free of obvious AGN and
have data deep enough to provide interesting measurements of the expected SZ
signal. Specialized analysis techniques are employed to extract the SZ effect
signal from these SCUBA data, including using SCUBA's short wavelength band as
an atmospheric monitor and fitting the long wavelength channel to a model of
the spatial distribution of each cluster's SZ effect. By explicitly excising
the exact cluster centre from our analysis we demonstrate that emission from
galaxies within the cluster does not contaminate our measurement. The SZ
amplitudes from our measurements are consistently higher than the amplitudes
inferred from low frequency measurements of the SZ decrement.Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, replacement matches version published in MNRA
The influence of defects of the fatigue resistance of butt and girth welds in A106B steel
This three-phase study was directed at developing a fitness for service defect acceptance criteria for welds with defect indications. The study focussed on A106 Gr. B steel pipe. The first phase involved a literature search and critical review to develop the preliminary acceptance criteria to the extent permitted by the data. The second phase developed data for flat plate, wall segment, and vessel specimens containing artificial or natural planar or volumetric defects.
