    Get PDF
In this unit for 6th graders, students will bridge their understanding between reading for information and reading solely for entertainment. Students will develop an understanding of the connection between discovery and reading as well as understanding that they are discoverers in their own right. Students will construct a fact book that includes information from various sources on the areas we have covered as well as constructing an analysis and explanation of their decisions. The assessments will provide students the framework to adjust perceptions and utilization of resources to match the purpose of their actions. In the end, students will understand that reading is a vital key to learning, even through fiction, and that discoveries are made by various people every day. Students will develop a dedication for reading for a purpose and form a lasting connection to discoveries in the world that have affected their lives

Supporting Parents in Title I Schools: A Qualitative Study of Parent Engagement

    Get PDF
This qualitative study focuses on how to improve parent engagement in Title I schools from parents’ point of view. The purpose of this project is to understand parent involvement in a Northern California school and how to improve it. This paper offers insights from parents’ perspectives how parents view the education process. The focus is on their experiences and how to support all parents. The lenses of the study is viewed through a critical pedagogy and social cognitive theory. All five of the parents being interviewed had suggestions on how to improve parent engagement in Title I Schools. The three research questions for this study were: (1) How do parents perceive their engagement with the school community? (2) What factors contribute to increased parent engagement at this school? (3) What factors contribute to decreased parent engagement at this school? In conclusion, due to the high cost of living in the Bay Area, many parents have to work longer hours and make much less compared to other years. Schools need to provide support for parents working long hours. One recommendation is for schools to provide workshops to support parents and to offer school activities on different days and times so that more parents can be active in school participation

Inclusion and Racial Diversity Curriculum in Preschools

    Get PDF
Preschool aged children begin to observe the things that makes individuals different in the world around them. Teachers have the opportunity to teach children the importance of recognizing the differences and accepting towards others who are racially different. Lessons around racial diversity will help children extend their knowledge about others and help develop positive attitudes towards racial diversity . To address the need for preschool aged children to learn about diversity in a positive way, I created a 3 day lesson plan about racial diversity executed at CSUMB child care center

Forgotten Voices: United Nations, Human Rights, and Central America\u27s Refugee Crisis

    Get PDF
Within the international community, exists an institution known as the United Nations that strives to uphold the protections of human rights. Known to set the tone for all member states on how to approach human rights, they also advise states during times of crisis, as with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Such clusters of states are known as the Northern Triangle and the region underwent an exponential refugee crisis, highlighted in 2018, via mass caravans from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to neighboring counties, Mexico, and the United States. Beyond acknowledging the instant need for the international community to seek actors to blame, whether that be the United Nations or member states, this paper will investigate the dynamic between the Human Rights Regime and its actors. This paper will seek to answer the question: How has the United Nation’s prioritization of some human rights impacted Central America’s approach towards the Refugee Crisis? Through a qualitative approach, in testing the hypothesis, this paper has found that the United Nations has not directly influenced the Northern Triangle’s approach towards the 2018 caravan, but rather the interpretations of their conventions relating to all categories of human rights have greatly influenced the approaches the Northern Triangle states have taken in handling the refugee crisis. Both the instability of the states themselves, paired with such influences, have led to the repeating failure of curtaining the refugee crisis

Analysis of digital data about the preference of audiovisual audiences

    Get PDF
Currently, audiences have a varied catalog through digital platforms that have generated more perceptiveness when consuming content. The objective of this research is to know the audiovisual preference of audiences in Ibero-America according to how they consume content through digital platforms between 2012 and 2021. For this purpose, fourteen papers were selected from the Ebsco and Redalyc databases, where the year, language, free access, and country of origin were considered. The results showed the freedom and autonomy of the audiences when selecting the content to be consumed whenever they want. In addition, streaming platforms are new consumption models that provide users with a wide range of content according to their preferences. The main limitation of the search was the access to articles that, for the most part, presented relevant titles for the research. In conclusion, there are new audiovisual business models that generate new audiences that can adapt and be more perceptive to the audiovisual content they consume

A systematic review of speech recognition technology in health care

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND To undertake a systematic review of existing literature relating to speech recognition technology and its application within health care. METHODS A systematic review of existing literature from 2000 was undertaken. Inclusion criteria were: all papers that referred to speech recognition (SR) in health care settings, used by health professionals (allied health, medicine, nursing, technical or support staff), with an evaluation or patient or staff outcomes. Experimental and non-experimental designs were considered. Six databases (Ebscohost including CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE including the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, OVID Technologies, PreMED-LINE, PsycINFO) were searched by a qualified health librarian trained in systematic review searches initially capturing 1,730 references. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were retained. RESULTS The heterogeneity of the studies made comparative analysis and synthesis of the data challenging resulting in a narrative presentation of the results. SR, although not as accurate as human transcription, does deliver reduced turnaround times for reporting and cost-effective reporting, although equivocal evidence of improved workflow processes. CONCLUSIONS SR systems have substantial benefits and should be considered in light of the cost and selection of the SR system, training requirements, length of the transcription task, potential use of macros and templates, the presence of accented voices or experienced and in-experienced typists, and workflow patterns.Funding for this study was provided by the University of Western Sydney. What's at Stake for the State: Undocumented Californians, Immigration Reform, and Our Future Together

    Get PDF
Building off a methodology originally pioneered by co-author Enrico A.Marcelli (Demographer, Department ofSociology, San Diego State University) to estimate the unauthorized, this is the first report to estimate undocumented Californians at this breadth and level of detail. One in six California children has at least one undocumented parent and 81% of those children are citizens. Nearly half (49%) of undocumented Californians have lived here more than 10 years. Undocumented Californians comprise nearly 7% of the state's total population, 8% of all adults and 9% of the state's workforce. However, achievement of these gains will require a clear and quick roadmap to citizenship. To succeed, federal immigration reform needs to take immigrant integration seriously, and the state and local governments will need to invest in programs to raise education levels, increase English fluency and improve job skills as a way to maximize the potential of undocumented Californians and build a stronger state
