Radiation and viscous dissipation effects for the Blasius and Sakiadis flows with a convective surface boundary condition

    Get PDF
This study is devoted to investigate the radiation and viscous dissipation effects on the laminar boundary layer about a flat-plate in a uniform stream of fluid (Blasius flow), and about a moving plate in a quiescent ambient fluid (Sakiadis flow) both under a convective surface boundary condition. Using a similarity variable, the governing nonlinear partial differential equations have been transformed into a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are solved numerically by using shooting technique along side with the sixth order of Runge-Kutta integration scheme and the variations of dimensionless surface temperature and fluid-solid interface characteristics for different values of Prandtl number Pr, radiation parameter NR, parameter a and the Eckert number Ec, which characterizes our convection processes are graphed and tabulated. Quite different and interesting behaviours were encountered for Blasius flow compared with a Sakiadis flow. A comparison with previously published results on special cases of the problem shows excellent agreement

An Application of Vector Autoregressive Model on Investments and Savings in Nigeria

The saving- investment relationship and its implication for economic growth across borders has been sharplydebated in the literature since the pioneering work of Feldstein and Horioka (1980). In this paper, the debate is extended to the Nigerian economy in Africa using the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) approach and causality tests on the Savings and Investment data obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).The effects of stochastic shocks to investment on savings and to savings on investment are explored and it was observed that savings granger causes investment and investment granger causes savings. Thus, policies should be concentrated towards enhancing the level of investment to bolster savings in the Nation. Spatial distribution and landuse planning of informal automobile workshops in Osogbo, Nigeria

    Get PDF
It is against the background of the increasing incidence and indiscriminate springing up of informal automobile workshops in virtually every open space in Nigerian cities that this study evaluates the spatial distribution of informal automobile workshops in Osogbo. This is with a view to identifying planning strategies for addressing the seemingly uncontrollable proliferation of informal workshops in the city. Global Positioning System was used to obtain coordinates of identified informal automobile workshops, while questionnaire administration to senior artisans was used to capture data pertaining to the activities and other related issues of their workshops. The study discovers that there is an average of 4 complementing units in each of the sixty-nine ‘visible’ workshops identified in the town. With First Order Nearest Neighbour Analysis index of 1.02, informal automobile workshops are randomly located in the town. Hence, informal automobile workshops can spring up beside, behind or within any form or type of land use along major road to distort the existing land use plan (if any). This is observed to be a great challenge for maintaining order in the city. The study therefore, recommends the establishment of mechanic complex, organization and formalization of automobile activity or land use as well as enforcement of development control, among others. Keywords: Spatial distribution; Informal Sector; Land us

Count Models Analysis of Factors Associated with Road Accidents in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The current state of all Nigerian roads is in poor condition, and reports of accidents have been recorded across the federation. The larger mission of the sustainable development goal is to promote sustainable cities and communities. This research study aims to examine factors responsible for road accidents in Nigeria through the quantitative tool of higher extensions of the Poisson regression model (ZTNPRM). A cross-sectional study design was adopted and secondary data was used within a sample period from the 1st quarter of 2006 to the 2nd quarter of 2020. Due to overdispersion, ZTNPRM indicates human errors contribute to a large proportion (41.4%) of road accidents. Vehicle factors are also statistically and positively related to road accidents. All the factors this model identified that lead to road accidents predicted low road accidents. Hence, the study recommends that Nigerian car users follow all rules and regulations associated with safe driving and make the environment safer for people as the sustainable development goal (SDGs). This study recommends more attention to the area of accident and injury prevention as a strategic objective of the SDGs

Clinical Presentations and Characteristics of Confirmed Covid-19 Patients over a 1-Year Period in a Private Health Facility in Ilorin, North-Central Nigeria

The first case of COVID-19 in Nigeria was confirmed on February 27, 2020.  Since then, many studies from government designated isolation centers have described the characteristics of patients with Covid-19. Even though COVID-19 testing and management are exclusively carried out at the NCDC-approved centers, majority of patients are referred from primary care facilities, both public and private owned. To our knowledge, there has been no studies regarding Covid-19 disease among the patients served by these centers. Our aim is to describe the clinical characteristics and outcome of COVID-19 cases seen at Olanrewaju Hospital, Ilorin, North Central Nigeria. This is a descriptive retrospective study of patients with confirmed COVID-19 seen over a one-year period. Records of all patients that tested positive using the real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) were retrieved to extract relevant information. Data was analyzed using Epi Info 7.48 patients were analyzed. The mean age (standard deviation) was 50.0 years (17.89). Male sex predominates (58.3% vs 41.7%). Majority of patients were symptomatic (93.7%). Fever was most common presentation (75.6%). Shortness of breath was experienced by 11 patients (24.4%). Co-morbidities were found among 75% of the patients with hypertension being the commonest (45.9%). There were 6 deaths (12.5%), 5 of which occurred in the older age patients. Case fatality rate was significantly higher during the first wave than during the second wave 40% vs 5.6%, p < 0.05. The male gender, co-morbidities and older age groups are particularly prone to severe covid-19 infection with poorer outcome
