    Loop quantum cosmology of Bianchi type IX models

    The loop quantum cosmology "improved dynamics" of the Bianchi type IX model are studied. The action of the Hamiltonian constraint operator is obtained via techniques developed for the Bianchi type I and type II models, no new input is required. It is shown that the big bang and big crunch singularities are resolved by quantum gravity effects. We also present the effective equations which provide modifications to the classical equations of motion due to quantum geometry effects.Comment: 20 page

    Lentiviral entry to quiescent lymphocytes represents a 'time bomb' waiting for cellular activation to spread infection. In order to undergo immune activation T cells interact with dendritic cells presenting peptide:MHC complexes 'sampling' them to look for agonist peptides and receiving survival signals from self peptides. This makes the dendritic cell:T cell interaction an ideal checkpoint to contain lentiviral infection of quiescent lypmhocytes

    Efficient C-H Bond Activations O_2 Cleavage by a Dianionic Cobalt(II) Complex

    A dianionic, square planar cobalt(II) complex reacts with O_2 in the presence of acetonitrile to give a cyanomethylcobalt(III) complex formed by C-H bond cleavage. Interestingly, PhIO and -tolylazide react similarly to give the same cyanomethylcobalt(III) complex. Competition studies with various hydrocarbon substrates indicate that the rate of C-H bond cleavage greatly depends on the pK_a of the C-H bond, rather than on the C-H bond dissociation energy. Kinetic isotope experiments reveal a moderate KIE value of ca. 3.5 using either O_2 or PhIO. The possible involvement of a cobalt(IV) oxo species in this chemistry is discussed

    Investigation into the Ratio of Operating and Support Costs to Life-Cycle Costs for DoD Weapon Systems

    Recent legislation, such as the Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act of 2009, requires a renewed emphasis on understanding Operating and Support (O&S) costs. Conventional wisdom within the acquisition community suggests a 70:30 cost ratio with respect to O&S and acquisition of an average weapon system. Using 37 Air Force and Navy programs, the authors estimate the mean overall ratio of O&S costs to acquisition costs to be closer to 55:45, although many weapon systems displayed significant deviation from this 55 percent average. Contributing factors such as life expectancy and acquisition strategy (i.e., new system or modification) affect this variance. Their research advises against using a single “one-size-fits-all” O&S/ acquisition cost ratio for all major DoD weapon systems

    Robotic Joint Torque Testing: A Critical Tool in the Development of Pressure Suit Mobility Elements

    Pressure suits allow pilots and astronauts to survive in extreme environments at the edge of Earth’s atmosphere and in the vacuum of space. One obstacle that pilots and astronauts face is that gas-pressurized suits stiffen when pressurized and greatly limit user mobility. As a result, a critical need exists to quantify and improve the mobility characteristics of pressure suits. A historical survey and critique of pressure-suit testing methodologies is first presented, followed by the results of recent pressure suit testing conducted at the MIT Man-Vehicle Laboratory (MVL). MVL researchers, in cooperation with the David Clark Company (Worcester, MA), used an anthropometrically-realistic robotic space suit tester to quantify pressure suit mobility characteristics of the S1034 Pilot Protective Assembly (PPA), a pressure suit worn by U-2 pilots. This suit was evaluated unpressurized, at a vent pressure of 5.5 kPa (0.8 psi), and at an emergency gauge pressure of 20.7 kPa (3 psi). Joint torque data was collected for elbow flexion/extension, shoulder flexion/extension, shoulder abduction/adduction, and knee flexion/extension motions. The aim of this study was to generate a robust baseline mobility database for the S1034 PPA to serve as a point of comparison for future pressure suit designs, and to provide recommendations for future pressure garment testing

    Birth weight, family history of diabetes and diabetes onset in schizophrenia.

    INTRODUCTION:The prevalence of diabetes in schizophrenia is twice that in the general population, but there are few reliable predictors of which individuals will develop glucose dysregulation. OBJECTIVE:To test if abnormal birth weight (either too low or too high) and parental diabetes, both variables that can be ascertained in the clinic, can predict diabetes onset in patients with schizophrenia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS:Electronic records of a cohort of 190 clozapine-treated patients (37% treated for more than 20 years) and Cox regression survival analysis (with any type of glucose dysregulation as the event) to account for differences in length of treatment before the event and age at clozapine treatment initiation. RESULTS:Age at clozapine initiation (Exp(B)=1.098; p<0.001), family history of diabetes (Exp(B)=2.299; p=0.049) and birth weight2 (Exp(B)=0.999; p=0.013) were significant predictors of glucose dysregulation onset, while gender was not (Exp(B)=0.1.350; p=0.517). Among individuals with 10 years of follow-up, 80% of those with both abnormal birth weight and a family history of diabetes developed diabetes compared with 56% with only abnormal birth weight, 40% with only a family history of diabetes and 20% in those with neither. CONCLUSIONS:Since 48% of cases had at least one risk factor and 6% had both risk factors, there is a substantial proportion of patients for whom preventive strategies could be implemented
