In vivo cranial bone strain and bite force in the agamid lizard Uromastyx geyri
In vivo bone strain data are the most direct evidence of deformation and strain regimes in the vertebrate cranium during feeding and can provide important insights into skull morphology. Strain data have been collected during feeding across a wide range of mammals; in contrast, in vivo cranial bone strain data have been collected from few sauropsid taxa. Here we present bone strain data recorded from the jugal of the herbivorous agamid lizard Uromastyx geyri along with simultaneously recorded bite force. Principal and shear strain magnitudes in Uromastyx geyri were lower than cranial bone strains recorded in Alligator mississippiensis, but higher than those reported from herbivorous mammals. Our results suggest that variations in principal strain orientations in the facial skeleton are largely due to differences in feeding behavior and bite location, whereas food type has little impact on strain orientations. Furthermore, mean principal strain orientations differ between male and female Uromastyx during feeding, potentially because of sexual dimorphism in skull morphology
Quasiharmonic elastic constants corrected for deviatoric thermal stresses
The quasiharmonic approximation (QHA), in its simplest form also called the
statically constrained (SC) QHA, has been shown to be a straightforward method
to compute thermoelastic properties of crystals. Recently we showed that for
non-cubic solids SC-QHA calculations develop deviatoric thermal stresses at
high temperatures. Relaxation of these stresses leads to a series of
corrections to the free energy that may be taken to any desired order, up to
self-consistency. Here we show how to correct the elastic constants obtained
using the SC-QHA. We exemplify the procedure by correcting to first order the
elastic constants of MgSiO-perovskite and MgSiO-post-perovskite, the
major phases of the Earth's lower mantle. We show that this first order
correction is quite satisfactory for obtaining the aggregated elastic averages
of these minerals and their velocities in the lower mantle. This type of
correction is also shown to be applicable to experimental measurements of
elastic constants in situations where deviatoric stresses can develop, such as

Accessibility of the resources of near Earth space using multi-impulse transfers
Most future concepts for exploration and exploitation of space require a large initial mass in low Earth orbit. Delivering this mass requires overcoming Earth's natural gravity well, which imposes a distinct obstacle to space-faring. An alternative for future space progress is to search for resources in-situ among the near Earth asteroid population. This paper examines the scenario of future utilization of asteroid resources. The near Earth asteroid resources that could be transferred to a bound Earth orbit are determined by integrating the probability of finding asteroids inside the Keplerian orbital element space of the set of transfers with an specific energy smaller than a given threshold. Transfers are defined by a series of impulsive maneuvers and computed using the patched-conic approximation. The results show that even moderately low energy transfers enable access to a large mass of resources

The weight for random quark masses
In theories in which the parameters of the low energy theory are not unique,
perhaps having different values in different domains of the universe as is
possible in some inflationary models, the fermion masses would be distributed
with respect to some weight. In such a situation the specifics of the fermion
masses do not have a unique explanation, yet the weight provides the visible
remnant of the structure of the underlying theory. This paper introduces this
concept of a weight for the distribution of masses and provides a quantitative
estimate of it from the observed quarks and leptons. The weight favors light
quark masses and appears roughly scale invariant (rho ~ 1/m). Some relevant
issues, such as the running of the weight with scale and the possible effects
of anthropic constraints, are also discussed.Comment: 35pages, 19 figure
Higher-Order Angular Galaxy Correlations in the SDSS: Redshift and Color Dependence of non-Linear Bias
We present estimates of the N-point galaxy, area-averaged, angular
correlation functions () for = 2,...,7 for
galaxies from the fifth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our
parent sample is selected from galaxies with , and is the
largest ever used to study higher-order correlations. We subdivide this parent
sample into two volume limited samples using photometric redshifts, and these
two samples are further subdivided by magnitude, redshift, and color (producing
early- and late-type galaxy samples) to determine the dependence of
() on luminosity, redshift, and galaxy-type. We
measure () using oversampling techniques and use them
to calculate the projected, . Using models derived from theoretical
power-spectra and perturbation theory, we measure the bias parameters and
, finding that the large differences in both bias parameters ( and
) between early- and late-type galaxies are robust against changes in
redshift, luminosity, and , and that both terms are consistently
smaller for late-type galaxies. By directly comparing their higher-order
correlation measurements, we find large differences in the clustering of
late-type galaxies at redshifts lower than 0.3 and those at redshifts higher
than 0.3, both at large scales ( is larger by at ) and
small scales (large amplitudes are measured at small scales only for ,
suggesting much more merger driven star formation at ). Finally, our

Quantum entanglement between a nonlinear nanomechanical resonator and a microwave field
We consider a theoretical model for a nonlinear nanomechanical resonator
coupled to a superconducting microwave resonator. The nanomechanical resonator
is driven parametrically at twice its resonance frequency, while the
superconducting microwave resonator is driven with two tones that differ in
frequency by an amount equal to the parametric driving frequency. We show that
the semi-classical approximation of this system has an interesting fixed point
bifurcation structure. In the semi-classical dynamics a transition from stable
fixed points to limit cycles is observed as one moves from positive to negative
detuning. We show that signatures of this bifurcation structure are also
present in the full dissipative quantum system and further show that it leads
to mixed state entanglement between the nanomechanical resonator and the
microwave cavity in the dissipative quantum system that is a maximum close to
the semi-classical bifurcation. Quantum signatures of the semi-classical

Is God really good to the upright? Theological educators exploring Psalm 73 through the Jungian lenses of sensing, intuition, feeling and thinking
Psalm 73 is a challenging Psalm in which the Psalmist draws on rich imagery to juxtapose doctrine and experience, and to juxtapose the goodness of God with divine retribution. Drawing on data provided by 15 theological educators within the Anglican Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, this study tests the thesis that the imagery of Psalm 73 will be perceived differently by sensing types and by intuitive types, and that the issue ‘Is God really good to the upright?’ will be judged differently by feeling types and by thinking types. The findings from this study are consistent with the broader hermeneutical theory that the psychological type profile of the reader, in terms of perceiving preference and judging preference, plays a formative part in shaping the interpretation of biblical material
