    Borel singularities at small x

    D.I.S. at small Bjorken xx is considered within the dipole cascade formalism. The running coupling in impact parameter space is introduced in order to parametrize effects that arise from emission of large size dipoles. This results in a new evolution equation for the dipole cascade. Strong coupling effects are analyzed after transforming the evolution equation in Borel (bb) space. The Borel singularities of the solution are discussed first for the universal part of the dipole cascade and then for the specific process of D.I.S. at small xx. In the latter case the leading infrared renormalon is at b=1/β0b=1/\beta_0 indicating the presence of 1/Q21/Q^2 power corrections for the small-xx structure functions.Comment: 5 pages, Latex (Talk presented at DIS'97, Chicago, IL

    Condensation, Partial Melting and Evaporation Processes Influence the Bulk Compositions of Spinel-Cored Spherules in the CO3.1 Chondrite Miller Range 90019

    Here we focus on spinel-cored spherule calcium-aluminum rich inclusions (CAI), dominantly ~75-80 microns in diameter in the CO3.1 chondrite Miller Range 90019, which make up ~ 12 % of the fine-grained CAIs in one thin section. Their mineralogical content ranges from rare grossite- and hibonite-bearing varieties, through perovskite-melilitebearing, to fassaite-bearing and finally anorthitebearing. Non-spherical CAIs have been divided into 4 other groups, defined based on mineralogical abundances. We also characterized a group of AOAs from this sample. No glass has been recognized in any inclusions. Some relatively evolved members (anorthite-, spinel- + fassaite-bearing) among the spherules are found engulfed in AOAs. We characterized the bulk compositions of ~145 CAIs and AOAs in this meteorite, derived from EDS-x-ray mapping of the inclusions. We determined bulk compositions both with and without Wark-Lovering rims (when present), which are largely composed of diopside forsterite. The balance of the inclusions appear to have not been melted or partially melted, but rather they have textures that indicate they are condensates, often modified by extensive reaction with nebular gases. This presents the opportunity to examine effects on the bulk compositions of spherules resulting potentially from melting plus evaporation. Other aspects of this suite of refractory inclusions have been discussed in these abstracts. Oxygen isotope variations in one spherule were presented in [4]. The latter study showed a complex history of reaction with nebular gases possessing a variety of Oisotope compositions.     Gravitoelectromagnetism and Dark Energy in Superconductors

    A gravitomagnetic analogue of the London moment in superconductors can explain the anomalous Cooper pair mass excess reported by Janet Tate. Ultimately the gravitomagnetic London moment is attributed to the breaking of the principle of general covariance in superconductors. This naturally implies non-conservation of classical energy-momentum. Possible relation with the manifestation of dark energy in superconductors is questioned.Comment: 10 pages.     Analysis of WFPC-2 Core Samples for MMOD Discrimination

    An examination of the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC-2) radiator assembly was conducted at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center during the summer of 2009. Immediately apparent was the predominance of impact features, identified as simple or complex craters, resident only in the thermal paint layer; similar features were observed during a prior survey of the WFPC-1 radiator. Larger impact features displayed spallation zones, darkened areas, and other features not observed in impacts onto bare surfaces. Craters were extracted by coring the radiator in the NASA Johnson Space Centers Space Exposed Hardware cleanroom and were subsequently examined using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to determine the likely origin, e.g., micrometeoritic or orbital debris, of the impacting projectile. Recently, a selection of large cores was re-examined using a new technique developed to overcome some limitations of traditional crater imaging and analysis. This technique, motivated by thin section analysis, examines a polished, lateral surface area revealed by cross-sectioning the core sample.     Oxygen Isotopic Imaging of Refractory Inclusions from the Miller Range (MIL) 090019 CO3 Chondrite: A Perovskite Perspective

    Calcium-Aluminum-rich Inclusions (CAIs) in primitive meteorites are the first solids to condense in the Solar System. The oxygen isotopic compositions recorded in various mineral components of CAIs provide clues about their origins and post-formation histories, recording processes such as condensation, melting, nebular alteration, and fluidrock reactions on the parent body. MIL 090019 is similar to some rare carbonaceous chondrites such as Acfer 094, DOM 08004/6 and ALH 77303 that contain high abundances of a variety of refractory inclusions. This provides an opportunity to study the oxygen isotopic record of different types of refractory inclusions within the same meteorite. We analyzed CAIs specifically targeting primary minerals that are direct nebular condensates, such as corundum and perovskite, with the goal of gaining insights into the O isotopic composition of the nebular gas(es) from which these CAIs condensed. As MIL 090019 is a classified as CO3.1, it shows some signs of thermal metamorphism, compared to the more primitive CO3 meteorites (e.g., DOM 08004/06). A second goal of this study is to search for evidence of nebular processes in phases such as perovskite and melilite that are susceptible to parent body alteration to varying degrees. We analyzed the oxygen isotopic compositions of various CAIs from the MIL 090019 CO3 carbonaceous chondrite by ion imaging using the NanoSIMS 50L (Nano Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer) at JSC following methods described in. An advantage of ion imaging over traditional spot analyses is that it provides spatial context to the oxygen isotopic data.     A systematic review of the role of bisphosphonates in metastatic disease

    Objectives: To identify evidence for the role of bisphosphonates in malignancy for the treatment of hypercalcaemia, prevention of skeletal morbidity and use in the adjuvant setting. To perform an economic review of current literature and model the cost effectiveness of bisphosphonates in the treatment of hypercalcaemia and prevention of skeletal morbidity Data sources: Electronic databases (1966-June 2001). Cochrane register. Pharmaceutical companies. Experts in the field. Handsearching of abstracts and leading oncology journals (1999-2001). Review methods: Two independent reviewers assessed studies for inclusion, according to predetermined criteria, and extracted relevant data. Overall event rates were pooled in a meta-analysis, odds ratios ( OR) were given with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Where data could not be combined, studies were reported individually and proportions compared using chi- squared analysis. Cost and cost-effectiveness were assessed by a decision analytic model comparing different bisphosphonate regimens for the treatment of hypercalcaemia; Markov models were employed to evaluate the use of bisphosphonates to prevent skeletal-related events (SRE) in patients with breast cancer and multiple myeloma. Results: For acute hypercalcaemia of malignancy, bisphosphonates normalised serum calcium in >70% of patients within 2-6 days. Pamidronate was more effective than control, etidronate, mithramycin and low-dose clodronate, but equal to high dose clodronate, in achieving normocalcaemia. Pamidronate prolongs ( doubles) the median time to relapse compared with clodronate or etidronate. For prevention of skeletal morbidity, bisphosphonates compared with placebo, significantly reduced the OR for fractures (OR [95% CI], vertebral, 0.69 [0.57-0.84], non-vertebral, 0.65 [0.54-0.79], combined, 0.65 [0.55-0.78]) radiotherapy 0.67 [0.57-0.79] and hypercalcaemia 0.54 [0.36-0.81] but not orthopaedic surgery 0.70 [0.46-1.05] or spinal cord compression 0.71 [0.47-1.08]. However, reduction in orthopaedic surgery was significant in studies that lasted over a year 0.59 [0.39-0.88]. Bisphosphonates significantly increased the time to first SRE but did not affect survival. Subanalyses were performed for disease groups, drugs and route of administration. Most evidence supports the use of intravenous aminobisphosphonates. For adjuvant use of bisphosphonates, Clodronate, given to patients with primary operable breast cancer and no metastatic disease, significantly reduced the number of patients developing bone metastases. This benefit was not maintained once regular administration had been discontinued. Two trials reported significant survival advantages in the treated groups. Bisphosphonates reduce the number of bone metastases in patients with both early and advanced breast cancer. Bisphosphonates are well tolerated with a low incidence of side-effects. Economic modelling showed that for acute hypercalcaemia, drugs with the longest cumulative duration of normocalcaemia were most cost-effective. Zoledronate 4 mg was the most costly, but most cost-effective treatment. For skeletal morbidity, Markov models estimated that the overall cost of bisphosphonate therapy to prevent an SRE was pound250 and pound1500 per event for patients with breast cancer and multiple myeloma, respectively. Bisphosphonate treatment is sometimes cost-saving in breast cancer patients where fractures are prevented. Conclusions: High dose aminobisphosphonates are most effective for the treatment of acute hypercalcaemia and delay time to relapse. Bisphosphonates significantly reduce SREs and delay the time to first SRE in patients with bony metastatic disease but do not affect survival. Benefit is demonstrated after administration for at least 6-12 months. The greatest body of evidence supports the use of intravenous aminobisphosphonates. Further evidence is required to support use in the adjuvant setting
