    Work, authority and participation : the scenario of circular organizing

    Get PDF
    Two antagonistic tendencies in the way work is organized can be observed in Europe and the North-American continent. First, there is the growing tendency toward more efficient and flexible modes of organizing by way of a clear (re)distribution of authority. At the other hand, the importance of participation and cooperation in the workplace is growing, also in view of ideas about empowerment, organizational democracy, and self-management. The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of organizing work in a circular manner, based on a synthesis of traditional and participative work relationships. Circularity implies that an ultimate authority in the workplace is absent and each member of the organization can participate directly or through representation in decision-making. Design precepts for organizing in a circular manner are discussed, and some implications for the role of authority and participation in the (postmodern) workplace are explored.labour economics ;

    Management as a profession:a grand societal challenge

    Get PDF
    The future of management as a profession is dependent on the rise of new forms of management, including both circularity and distributed leadership. This requires a transition away from the widespread belief that management is something done by a few individuals at the top of an organisation. As part of this transition, there is a need to shift attention from human agents towards management technologies. Professor Georges Romme, from Eindhoven University of Technology, explains how the quest for management as a science-based profession can be revitalised

    Méthodologie de « Design Collaboratif » : une approche intégrative

    CommunicationPlusieurs travaux suggÚrent que le « design » peut constituer une forme « idéale-type » de recherche, capable de réconcilier et d'articuler les connaissances théoriques et les connaissances pratiques. Dans cette communication nous proposons une méthodologie de design collective et intégrative : collective parce qu'elle se centre sur l'articulation des savoirs théoriques et pratiques ; intégrative parce qu'elle tente de combiner les aspects clés des deux démarches de design identifiées, celle fondée sur la science des organisations et celle privilégiant la participation et l'engagement des praticiens. Cette méthodologie a été développée pour concevoir une solution TIC innovante, un site web de compétences, visant à renforcer les synergies et l'innovation au sein du cluster Télécoms Sophipolitain. Au-delà du contexte dans lequel elle a été développée, cette méthodologie répond au défi de produire à la fois des connaissances théoriques et pratiques

    Reinventing the future: adding design science to the repertoire of organization and management studies

    Mainstream research on organization and management is largely modeled after the natural sciences and the humanities. It aims at understanding social systems and, as such, has produced a vast knowledge base. However, this knowledge base has been criticized as fragmented and lacking relevance for practice. Two recent developments have produced the possibility of reinventing the future of organization and management studies: the increasing interest in design science research and in evidence-based management. First, we discuss how the actor perspective and solution-orientation of design science research can lead to more relevant research output. Second, we explore how the use of this research output in evidence-based management – typically via a design-oriented research synthesis – can decrease fragmentation by drawing together various strands of research and, moreover, lead to more relevant and interesting research questions, aiming at understanding as well as solution design Adding design science research to the repertoire of organization and management studies can create a virtuous cycle toward a future in which these studies matter more than they do now

    Crafting and Assessing Design Science Research for Entrepreneurship

    Get PDF
    Recognizing the importance of various types of artifacts for entrepreneurship, design science (DS) has been proposed as an inclusive approach that combines relevance and rigor. By enabling researchers to go beyond their traditional roles as observers and analysts of established artifacts to help design new artifacts, DS can improve the relevance of entrepreneurship research. However, there is a paucity of knowledge on how this type of research can be published in leading entrepreneurship journals. In this editorial, we seek to provide practical guidance on how to craft and assess DS studies that target ETP and other top-tier journals
