Coding with Knots

In this paper we explore new ways to approach understanding of the mysterious Precolumbian quipus, using both visual and sonic interpretations. We base our investigation on the Harvard Quipu Archive, starting with graphical visualisation techniques that give us an overall view so we can compare textile structures and perform basic cryptanalysis. We use listening and sonification in order to filter and compare the different modes of data representation (knot type, colour, twist and material). This provides new ways to explore both currently understood and unknown patterns of meaning in quipus. Durcheinander. Understanding Clustering Via Interactive Sonification

Presented at the 14th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD2008) on June 24-27, 2008 in Paris, France.With Durcheinander we present a system to help understand Agglomerative Clustering processes as they appear in various datamining tasks. Durcheinander consists of a toy dataset represented by several small objects on a tabletop surface. A computer vision systems tracks their position and computes a cluster dendrogram which is sonified every time a substantial change in this dendrogram takes place. Durcheinander may be used to answer questions concerning the behavior of clustering algorithms under various conditions. We propose its usage as a didactical and explorative platform for single- and multi-user operation

Report of Symposium Ethical, Legal and Political issues of Computing (ELPIC) that was organised during World Humanities Conference held in Liège, Belgium, from 6 to 11 August 2017, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) and the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH).
