    Protección fitosanitaria del arbolado urbano en San José, Costa Rica

    Green spaces in cities, including trees serve multiple functions for the benefit of society. Generally, trees in the city are under unfavorable conditions for their health, reducing its vigor and many of them are sick. To handle any phytosanitary problem, it is necessary to make a diagnosis that clearly identify their causes. This paper describes the main phytosanitary problems detected in the city of San José (Costa Rica), produced by biotic agents such as insects, mites, fungi, bacteria and mistletoes and other limiting factors for the development of trees.Los espacios verdes en las ciudades, incluyendo el arbolado cumplen múltiples funciones para beneficio de la sociedad. Generalmente, los árboles en la ciudad se encuentran en condiciones desfavorables para su salud, lo que disminuye su vigor y muchos de ellos se enferman. Para manejar cualquier problema fitosanitario, es indispensable realizar un diagnóstico que permita determinar claramente sus causas. Se describen en este artículo los principales problemas fitosanitarios detectados en la ciudad de San José (Costa Rica), producidos por agentes bióticos como insectos, ácaros, hongos, bacterias y muérdagos y otros factores limitantes para su desarrollo del arbolado

    Analysis of the Performance of a Dehulling System for Confectionary Sunflower Seeds

    Confectionary sunflower, which has a larger size and lower oil content than oilseed sunflower, has a considerable market, since it is used for birdfeed and human consumption. The characteristics of use of confectionary sunflower seeds require a dehulling process that is efficient in the removal of the hull and that also allows obtaining a product consisting mainly of whole kernels. Response surface methodology was used to determine an optimal combination of working conditions in the dehulling process of confectionary sunflower seeds. Optimization factors were impact speed, expressed in terms of the peripheral speed (28.3 - 41.9 m/s), and moisture content of the seeds (4% - 14%, dry basis—db). A central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was used to develop models for the responses (dehulling ability—DA and percentage of whole kernels—WK). Applying the desirability function method, the optimal values of the factors were determined using maximum WK and maximum DA as criteria. The results of the optimization technique suggest that by dehulling Mycogen 9338 confectionary sunflower seeds at 12.3% db and 32.5 m/s, the maximum values of DA and WK (72.6% and 63%, respectively) would be obtained. The moisture value defined as optimal determines a requirement of humidification of the seeds prior to dehulling, establishing the need for a technical and economic feasibility study.Fil: de Figueiredo, Ana Karina.     Range Management Affects Native Ungulate Populations in Penísula Valdés, a World Natural Heritage

    Sheep rearing is the main productive activity in Patagonian rangelands, where guanacos are the only native ungulate. Ranchers perceive a decrease in range carrying capacity as guanaco numbers increase, therefore guanaco conservation within private lands becomes a considerable challenge. This issue is particularly evident in the World Natural Heritage Penı´nsula Valde´s (PV), where there is a need to harmonize livestock production and biodiversity conservation. While sheep rearing prevails as the primary land use in the area, some ecotourism initiatives have been implemented to complement livestock production. In order to study how land use affected guanaco distribution, we characterized PV’s ranches in termsof land subdivision, primary productivity, stocking-rate and management type, and assess how these variables affected guanaco encounter rates. Smaller ranches were composed of smaller paddocks (mean size 4.8 km2 ), which showed highervalues of the remote-sensing derived Enhance Vegetation Index (EVI) (mean 0.14) and held higher sheep densities (mean 108.0 sheep/km2 ), while larger management units (mean size 23.8 km2 ), showed lower EVI values (mean 0.12) and lower stocking-rates (mean 36.7 sheep/km2). This pattern suggests that primary productivity has been a decisive factor to determine the minimal paddock size set by ranchers in PV, apparently precluding excessive land-subdivision in less productive areas. Guanaco encounter rate, expressed as number of guanacos per travelled kilometre, was inversely relatedto EVI and stocking-rate. However, land subdivision was the better predictor of guanaco encounter-rate within only sheep ranches, finding more guanacos per kilometre as paddock size increased. In contrast, in ranches where ecotourism was implemented as a complementary activity, guanaco encounter-rates were greater, regardless of paddock size. Our results suggest that the implementation of an additional activity by which landowners derive benefits from wildlife has prompted a beneficial outcome for guanacos, presumably through a decrease in harassment intensity. Finally, we propose possible mechanisms by which land subdivision may affect guanaco distribution and potential alternatives for the inclusion of wildlife conservation in a context of extensive livestock production.Fil: Nabte, Marcela Janina.     Efecto de un programa de paciente experto en insuficiencia cardiaca

    Introduction: One of the strategies that has shown improvement in self-care for patients with heart failure is the formation of dyads and groups to provide peer support and achieve individual goals. General objective: To determine the effect of an expert patient program on heart failure related to the knowledge about adherence to treatment and satisfaction.Method: A sectional-descriptive pilot study was conducted in patients with heart failure diagnoses in a fourth-level institution. The sample size represents the entire population with the restriction criteria (N: 20 subjects). An expert patient program was implemented for 6 months and the measured outcomes were level of knowledge and satisfaction. Data was gathered from a knowledge test on adherence to treatment and a satisfaction poll. Information was processed with IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0. The distribution of absolute and relative frequencies was performed by descriptive analysis. Results: More than 95% of patients showed improvement in the level of knowledge and 85% reported a high global level of satisfaction (very satisfied), reflected in the dimension of loyalty and effectiveness. Conclusions: The expert patient in heart failure program is a cost-effective intervention, which provides capabilities to help other patients gain self-confidence and skills to manage their health condition.Introducción: Una estrategia que ha mostrado ser efectiva para promover el autocuidado en los pacientes con falla cardiaca es la formación de diadas y grupos que brinden apoyo de pares para favorecer el logro de metas individuales.Objetivo general: Determinar el efecto de un programa de paciente experto en falla cardiaca en los conocimientos relacionados con la adherencia al tratamiento y en la satisfacción. Método: Se realizó un estudio piloto descriptivo de corte transversal en pacientes con diagnósticos de falla cardiaca en una institución de cuarto nivel. El tamaño de la muestra correspondió a toda la población con los criterios de restricción (N: 20 sujetos). Se implementó un programa de paciente experto durante 6 meses y se midieron los desenlaces de nivel de conocimientos y satisfacción. Para la recolección de la información se utilizó un test de conocimientos sobre adherencia al tratamiento y una encuesta de satisfacción. La información se procesó a través del programa IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0, y se realizó un análisis descriptivo con distribución de frecuencias absolutas y relativas. Resultados: Más del 95% de los pacientes mostró mejoría significativa en el nivel de conocimientos y el 85% refirió el nivel de satisfacción global más alto (muy satisfechos), reflejado en la dimensión de fidelización y efectividad. Conclusiones: El programa del paciente experto en insuficiencia cardiaca se constituye en una intervención costo-efectiva que proporciona capacidades para ayudar a otros pacientes a adquirir autoconfianza y habilidades en el manejo de su condición de salud. &nbsp

    A simple method for identifying appropriate areas for onsite wastewater treatment

    Onsite Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems (ODWTS) are increasingly important for treating domestic wastewater in metropolitan contexts, especially in suburban sectors isolated from sewer networks and centralized treatment plants. When ODWTS are not correctly planned and located in suitable places, or are not properly designed, they can cause groundwater contamination and generate risks for human health. This work presents a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) to zone specific areas based on a few simple parameters. The proposed tool can be easily adapted to different contexts, even where institutional capacities are low. Results obtained in the metropolitan area of the Lerma Valley (Salta, Argentina) show strong contradictions between our zoning and current urbanization features in the study area. As a result, environmental impacts and health hazards are likely to manifest in the short or medium term. The sectors with the best receptivity conditions were found in the southern sector of the study area. We argue that ODWTS can be safely implemented in many areas as long as this concept is embedded in urban planning initiatives, which usually also require the consolidation or development of appropriate institutions and control systems.Fil: Iribarnegaray, Martín Alejandro.     INCIDÊNCIA DA INTELIGÊNCIA EMOCIONAL A PARTIR DAS LINGUAGENS ARTÍSTICAS NAS PRÁTICAS PEDAGÓGICAS DA ESCOLA

    This article was prepared as one of the topics of the research project “Impact of Emotional Intelligence starting from artistic languages in the pedagogical practices at the school”. It is intended to present some of the reflections of the work team issued in the course of the research process, concerning the inclusion of emotional intelligence and artistic languages in pedagogical and life experiences of teachers from the Capital District. It becomes our challenge to think about the theoretical approaches regarding the relationships: emotion-cognition, emotional intelligence-school, school-art-emotion, artistic languages-school, as well as about the role they play in the production of new knowledge and the methodological entries that are being generated in educational research to understand these processes.We are aware that artistic languages and emotional intelligence, when they are viewed through a pedagogical approach, may well constitute scenarios of recognition and transformation not only for pedagogical practices, but even for the human being who learns, teaches and lives daily the encounter with knowledge.El presente artículo se elabora en el marco del proyecto de investigación “Incidencia de la inteligencia emocional a partir de los lenguajes artísticos en las prácticas pedagógicas en la escuela”1. Se pretende plantear algunas de las reflexiones del equipo de trabajo alrededor del proceso investigativo en torno a la inclusión de la inteligencia emocional y los lenguajes artísticos en experiencias pedagógicas y de vida de maestros y maestras del Distrito Capital.Pensar en los discursos teóricos que circulan en torno a las relaciones: emociones-cognición; inteligencia emocional-escuela; escuela-arte-emoción; lenguajes artísticos-escuela; y el papel que juegan en la configuración de nuevos saberes en la escuela y las entradas metodológicas que se están generando desde la investigación educativa para comprender estos procesos, se convierte en nuestra apuesta.Reconocemos que los lenguajes artísticos y la Inteligencia emocional leídos en clave pedagógica se constituyen en escenarios de reconocimiento y transformación no sólo de las prácticas pedagógicas, sino del ser humano que aprende, enseña y vive diariamente el encuentro con el saber.Este artigo foi elaborado no âmbito do projeto de pesquisa “Incidência da Inteligência Emocional a partir das linguagens artísticas nas práticas pedagógicas da escola.” Destina-se a apresentar algumas reflexões da equipe do trabalho, em torno ao processo de investigação sobre a inclusão da inteligência emocional e as linguagens artísticas nas experiências pedagógicas e de vida dos professores e professoras do Distrito Capital.Pensar nos discursos teóricos que circulam em torno das relações: emoções-cognição, inteligência emocional-escola, escola-arte-emoção, linguagens artísticas-escola, bem como o rol que desempenham na configuração de novos saberes na escola e as entradas metodológicas que estão sendo geradas a partir da pesquisa pedagógica para compreender estes processos, torna-se o nosso desafio.     Grape pomace extract induced beige cells in white adipose tissue from rats and in 3T3-L1 adipocytes

    This study investigated the effects of a grape pomace extract (GPE) rich in phenolic compounds on brown-like adipocyte induction and adiposity in spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and control normotensive Wistar–Kyoto (WKY) rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). HFD consumption for 10 weeks significantly increased epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) in WKY but not in SHR rats. Supplementation with GPE (300 mg/kg body weight/day) reduced adipocyte diameter and increased levels of proteins that participate in adipogenesis and angiogenesis, i.e., peroxisome-proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), vascular endothelial grow factor-A (VEGF-A) and its receptor 2 (VEGF-R2), and partially increased the uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) in WKY. In both strains, GPE attenuated adipose inflammation. In eWAT from SHR, GPE increased the expression of proteins involved in adipose tissue “browning,” i.e., PPARγ-coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), PPARγ PR domain containing 16 (PRDM16) and UCP-1. In primary cultures of SHR adipocytes, GPE-induced UCP-1 up-regulation was dependent on p38 and ERK activation. Accordingly, in 3T3-L1 adipocytes treated with palmitate, the addition of GPE (30 μM) activated the β-adrenergic signaling cascade (PKA, AMPK, p38, ERK). This led to the associated up-regulation of proteins involved in mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC-1α PPARγ PRDM16 and UCP-1) and fatty acid oxidation (ATGL). These effects were similar to those exerted by (−)-epicatechin and quercetin, major phenolic compounds in GPE. Overall, in HFD-fed rats, supplementation with GPE promoted brown-like cell formation in eWAT and diminished adipose dysfunction. Thus, winemaking residues, rich in bioactive compounds, could be useful to mitigate the adverse effects of HFD-induced adipose dysfunction.Fil: Rodriguez Lanzi, Maria Cecilia.     Production and Sensory Evaluation of Novel Cheeses Made with Prebiotic Substances: Inulin and Oligofructose

    In recent years, the processing and consumption of functional foods worldwide have greatly increased. These foods benefit the body functions which improve consumers’ health and also reduce the risk factors that cause the onset of disease. Furthermore, prebiotic substances favor the multiplication of beneficial intestinal bacteria rather than harmful ones. The purpose of this study was to conduct the sensory evaluation of two functional cheeses containing inulin and oligofructose as a distinctive ingredient, including testing a cheese made with conventional ingredients, called control cheese. Affective type tests, which measured the degree of liking or disliking, were conducted using a verbal 7-point hedonic scale. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 57 untrained judges were selected. This study is a quantitative, analytic and experimental-cross design. Statistical analysis of the data was performed by ANOVA with repeated measures. The results show a similar average degree of liking for the three cheeses, above 5 on the scale or “like”. By analyzing the critical level and the result of the Mauchly’s sphericity test, it is concluded that there is no statistically significant difference in the degree of liking for the three cheeses. Therefore, the addition of prebiotics to artisanal cheeses achieves to satisfy consumers and provide them benefits superior to those provided by traditional foods.Fil: Machuca, Laura Marcela.     Quercetin attenuates adipose hypertrophy, in part through activation of adipogenesis in rats fed a high-fat diet

    An impaired capacity of adipose tissue expansion leads to adipocyte hypertrophy, inflammation and insulin resistance (IR) under positive energy balance. We previously showed that a grape pomace extract, rich in flavonoids including quercetin (Q), attenuates adipose hypertrophy. This study investigated whether dietary Q supplementation promotes adipogenesis in the epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) of rats consuming a high-fat diet, characterizing key adipogenic regulators in 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes. Consumption of a high-fat diet for 6 weeks caused IR, increased plasma TNFα concentrations, eWAT weight, adipocyte size and the eWAT/brown adipose tissue (BAT) ratio. These changes were accompanied by decreased levels of proteins involved in angiogenesis, VEGF-A and its receptor 2 (VEGF-R2), and of two central adipogenic regulators, i.e. PPARγ and C/EBPα, and proteins involved in mature adipocyte formation, i.e. fatty acid synthase (FAS) and adiponectin. Q significantly reduced adipocyte size and enhanced angiogenesis and adipogenesis without changes in eWAT weight and attenuated systemic IR and inflammation. In addition, high-fat diet consumption increased eWAT hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) levels and those of proteins involved in adipose inflammation (TLR-4, CD68, MCP-1, JNK) and activation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, i.e. ATF-6 and XBP-1. Q mitigated all these events. Q and quercetin 3-glucoronide prevented TNFα-mediated downregulation of adipogenesis during 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes early differentiation. Together, Q capacity to promote a healthy adipose expansion enhancing angiogenesis and adipogenesis may contribute to reduced adipose hypertrophy, inflammation and IR. Consumption of diets rich in Q could be useful to counteract the adverse effects of high-fat diet-induced adipose dysfunction.Fil: Perdicaro, Diahann Jeanette.
