    In a global analysis of the latest parity-violating electron scattering measurements on nuclear targets, we demonstrate a significant improvement in the experimental knowledge of the weak neutral-current lepton-quark interactions at low energy. The precision of this new result, combined with earlier atomic parity-violation measurements, places tight constraints on the size of possible contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model.     Rigorous derivation of a plate theory in linear elastoplasticity via Gamma convergence

    This paper deals with dimension reduction in linearized elastoplasticity in the rate-independent case. The reference configuration of the elastoplastic body is given by a two-dimensional middle surface and a small but positive thickness. We derive a limiting model for the case in which the thickness of the plate tends to 0. This model contains membrane and plate deformations which are coupled via plastic strains. The convergence analysis is based on an abstract Gamma convergence theory for rate-independent evolution formulated in the framework of energetic solutions. This concept is based on an energy-storage functional and a dissipation functional, such that the notion of solution is phrased in terms of a stability condition and an energy balance

    Extracting nucleon strange and anapole form factors from world data

    The complete world set of parity violating electron scattering data up to Q^2~0.3 GeV^2 is analysed. We extract the current experimental determination of the strange electric and magnetic form factors of the proton, as well as the weak axial form factors of the proton and neutron, at Q^2 = 0.1 GeV^2. Within experimental uncertainties, we find that the strange form factors are consistent with zero, as are the anapole contributions to the axial form factors. Nevertheless, the correlation between the strange and anapole contributions suggest that there is only a small probability that these form factors all vanish simultaneously.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs; v2: version to appear in PR

    Implications of the transition to a product-service system on the business model

    Product-service system (PSS) is a very complex concept that involves multiple aspects (e.g. business, environment and design). PSS have the potential to reduce the adverse environmental impact of manufacturing while simultaneously gaining economic benefit. When competition on the basis of price, time, quality, flexibility or environment has become insufficient for the success of a company, the adoption of a PSS business model can have a beneficial impact on company competitiveness. However, the shift from product to product-service is a major strategic decision which not only has implications on some of the classical components of a traditional business model, but other elements should also be taken into account. The authors approach the PSS business model from this perspective and identify two new components in addition to the traditional ones: business strategy as the driving force for all the other elements, and sustainability, because PSS are believed to have the potential to reduce the environmental burden

    Immersive learning in a block teaching model: A case study of academic reform through principles, policies and practice

    Universities across the globe are considering how to effect meaningful change in their higher education (HE) delivery in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and shifting student learning preferences. This paper reports on a descriptive case- study of whole-of-institution curriculum reform at one regional Australian university, where more traditional 13-week semesters have been replaced with a 6-week immersive block model known as the Southern Cross Model. Based on a synthesis of literature in best practice HE pedagogy and principles, the case study draws on both a review of policy and staff interviews (N = 5) to outline the key changes necessary for successful HE transformation. Analysis revealed themes related to the vital roles of leadership, capacity building, monitoring the transition, staff adoption, and adequate technical systems in implementing a radical, multifaceted institutional transformation. Implications for practice at institutions considering reforming their curriculum model are also discussed. The findings from this case study indicate that an institutional transformation to an immersive block model requires both a considered change in institutional policy and process, as well as the appropriate resourcing of roles, governance committees, technical solutions, and, importantly, communities of practice
