Serotonin drives a novel GABAergic synaptic current recorded in rat cerebellar purkinje cells: a lugaro cell to Purkinje cell synapse
We recorded a novel fast GABAergic synaptic current in cerebellar Purkinje cells in rat brain slices using patch-clamp techniques. Because of a relatively low sensitivity to bicuculline, these currents can be recorded under conditions in which basket and stellate cell inputs are blocked. The observations that the novel synaptic currents occur spontaneously only in the presence of serotonin, and the specific limited positions in the slice from which they can be electrically evoked, suggest that the presynaptic cell is the Lugaro cell. Cell-attached recordings confirm that the Lugaro cell is the only interneuron in the cerebellar cortex with firing behavior consistent with the spontaneous activity recorded in Purkinje cells. The input shows a strong presynaptic modulation mediated by GABAA receptors, resulting in a dynamic range from almost 0 to >90% release probability. Modeling GABAA receptor responses to different GABA transients suggests that the relatively low sensitivity of the synaptic currents to bicuculline, compared with the higher affinity GABAA receptor antagonist SR-95531 (2-(3-carboxypropyl)-3-amino-6-(4-methoxyphenyl) pyridazinium), is attributable to an unusually long GABA dwell time and/or high GABA concentration in the synaptic cleft. The significance of this novel input is discussed in relation to other GABAergic synapses impinging on Purkinje cells. We suggest that the release of GABA onto Purkinje cells from Lugaro cells would primarily occur during motor activity under conditions in which the activity of basket and stellate cells might be inhibited

Novel Sub-Harmonic Injection-Locked Balanced Oscillator
A novel sub-harmonic injection-locked balanced oscillator is proposed. The circuit provides two outputs with a 180° ° phase difference by employing a transmission line section for impedance transformation to meet the oscillation conditions. A coupling network is connected at the mid-point of the transmission line to inject the sub-harmonic frequency. This eliminates the need for a circulator or balun. The circuit is small and consumes low DC power. Under the locking state, the circuit provides double the injection frequency and also the phase noise of the two outputs is substantially improved
Internal parasites and association with diarrhoea in sheep at an abattoir in Western Australia
Diarrhoea (scouring) is an important issue for the sheep meat industry. Scouring is a major risk factor for fleece soiling and consequential carcase contamination with microbes that cause meat spoilage and potential dangers for humans (2). There is little information on the causes of scouring in sheep at slaughter. Strongyle worm infections are commonly implicated in scouring and reduced production, yet there is no published data quantifying strongyle infections in scouring and normal sheep at abattoirs. In addition, Giardia and Cryptosporidium have been associated with scouring in ruminants, but little is known about the prevalence, genotypes present or the effect on production in sheep populations. On the Impact of Entity Linking in Microblog Real-Time Filtering
Microblogging is a model of content sharing in which the temporal locality of
posts with respect to important events, either of foreseeable or unforeseeable
nature, makes applica- tions of real-time filtering of great practical
interest. We propose the use of Entity Linking (EL) in order to improve the
retrieval effectiveness, by enriching the representation of microblog posts and
filtering queries. EL is the process of recognizing in an unstructured text the
mention of relevant entities described in a knowledge base. EL of short pieces
of text is a difficult task, but it is also a scenario in which the information
EL adds to the text can have a substantial impact on the retrieval process. We
implement a start-of-the-art filtering method, based on the best systems from
the TREC Microblog track realtime adhoc retrieval and filtering tasks , and
extend it with a Wikipedia-based EL method. Results show that the use of EL

Simplicity of C*-algebras associated to row-finite locally convex higher-rank graphs
In previous work, the authors showed that the C*-algebra C*(\Lambda) of a
row-finite higher-rank graph \Lambda with no sources is simple if and only if
\Lambda is both cofinal and aperiodic. In this paper, we generalise this result
to row-finite higher-rank graphs which are locally convex (but may contain
sources). Our main tool is Farthing's "removing sources" construction which
embeds a row-finite locally convex higher-rank graph in a row-finite
higher-rank graph with no sources in such a way that the associated C*-algebras

Most of the existing sea turtle populations worldwide are in decline. In particular, loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) are listed as endangered and loggerhead nesting populations in Eastern Australia have declined by 86% since the 1970s. However, whilst Eastern Australian loggerhead populations have been extensively studied and monitored, not much is known about the Western Australian nesting population
Passive and active seismic isolation for gravitational radiation detectors and other instruments
Some new passive and active methods for reducing the effects of seismic disturbances on suspended masses are described, with special reference to gravitational radiation detectors in which differential horizontal motions of two or more suspended test masses are monitored. In these methods it is important to be able to determine horizontal seismic accelerations independent of tilts of the ground. Measurement of changes in inclination of the suspension wire of a test mass, relative to a direction defined by a reference arm of long period of oscillation, makes it possible to carry this out over the frequency range of interest for earth-based gravitational radiation detectors. The signal obtained can then be used to compensate for the effects of seismic disturbances on the test mass if necessary. Alternatively the signal corresponding to horizontal acceleration can be used to move the point from which the test mass is suspended in such a way as to reduce the effect of the seismic disturbance and also damp pendulum motions of the suspended test mass.
