    Hybrid PCM\u2014aluminium foams\u2019 thermal storages: an experimental study

    The latent heat absorption phenomenon associated with melting of a suitable Phase Change Material can be an effective way to improve the Thermal Energy Storage behaviour in many applications. However, the most suitable materials to be used in heating and refrigeration systems find intrinsic limitations due to their poor heat transfer capabilities. This work experimentally studies the use of aluminum foams as heat transfer medium to improve the overall heat transfer of paraffin waxes that can be possible phase change materials to be implemented in hybrid sensible-latent water thermal energy storages. The experimental tests were run in a dedicated setup designed, developed, and built at the Department of Management and Engineering of the University of Padova. The effects of the use of aluminum foams as enhancing heat transfer medium were studied by comparing the loading and unloading processes of a paraffin wax with melting temperature around 40 \ub0C, with and without metal foams, in a water thermal storage unit.     Object Distribution Networks for World-wide Document Circulation

    This paper presents an Object Distribution System (ODS), a distributed system inspired by the ultra-large scale distribution models used in everyday life (e.g. food or newspapers distribution chains). Beyond traditional mechanisms of approaching information to readers (e.g. caching and mirroring), this system enables the publication, classification and subscription to volumes of objects (e.g. documents, events). Authors submit their contents to publication agents. Classification authorities provide classification schemes to classify objects. Readers subscribe to topics or authors, and retrieve contents from their local delivery agent (like a kiosk or library, with local copies of objects). Object distribution is an independent process where objects circulate asynchronously among distribution agents. ODS is designed to perform specially well in an increasingly populated, widespread and complex Internet jungle, using weak consistency replication by object distribution, asynchronous replication, and local access to objects by clients. ODS is based on two independent virtual networks, one dedicated to the distribution (replication) of objects and the other to calculate optimised distribution chains to be applied by the first network

    Performance evaluation of Attribute-Based Encryption on constrained IoT devices

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is enabling a new generation of innovative services based on the seamless integration of smart objects into information systems. This raises new security and privacy challenges that require novel cryptographic methods. Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE) is a type of public-key encryption that enforces a fine-grained access control on encrypted data based on flexible access policies. The feasibility of ABE adoption in fully-fledged computing systems, i.e., smartphones or embedded systems, has been demonstrated in recent works. In this paper, we consider IoT devices characterized by strong limitations in terms of computing, storage, and power. Specifically, we assess the performance of ABE in typical IoT constrained devices. We evaluate the performance of three representative ABE schemes configured considering the worst-case scenario on two popular IoT platforms, namely ESP32 and RE-Mote. Our results show that, if we assume to employ up to 10 attributes in ciphertexts and to leverage hardware cryptographic acceleration, then ABE can indeed be adopted on devices with very limited memory and computing power, while obtaining a satisfactory battery lifetime. In our experiments, as also performed in other works in the literature, we consider only the worst-case configuration, which, however, might not be completely representative of the real working conditions of sensors employing ABE. For this reason, we complete our evaluation by proposing a novel benchmark method that we used to complement the experiments by evaluating the average performance. We show that by always considering the worst case, the current literature significantly overestimates the processing time and the energy consumption

    Long-term (10 years) prognostic value of a normal thallium-201 myocardial exercise scintigraphy in patients with coronary artery disease documented by angiography

    In order to assess the prognostic significance of normal exercise thallium-210 myocardial scintigraphy in patients with documented coronary artery disease, we studied the incidence of cardiac death and non-fatal myocardial infarction in 69 symptomatic patients without prior Q wave myocardial infarction, who demonstrated one or more significant coronary lesions (stenosis ≀70%) on an angiogram performed within 3 months of scintigraphy (Group 1). These patients were compared to a second group of 136 patients with an abnormal exercise scintigram, defined by the presence of reversible defect(s) and angiographically proven coronary artery disease (Group 2), and to a third group of 102 patients with normal exercise scintigraphy without significant coronary lesions (stenosis ≄30%) or with normal coronary angiography (Group 3). In contrast to coronary lesions observed in Group 2, patients in Group I presented more frequently with single- vessel disease (83% vs 35%, P>0·0001) and with more distal lesions (55% vs 23%, P>0·0001). Over a mean follow-up period of 8·6 years, one fatal and eight non-fatal cases of myocardial infarction were observed in Group 1. The majority of patients in Group 1 were treated medically: only 24 (35%) underwent myocardial revascularization, usually by coronary angioplasty. There was no significant difference in the incidence of combined major cardiac events (cardiac death, non-fatal myocardial infarction) in patients with normal exercise scintigraphy, with or without documented coronary artery disease (Groups 1 and 3), while the incidence was higher in Group 2. However, while the mortality remained very low in Group 1, the incidence of non-fatal myocardial infraction was not different from that of Group 2, where most patients underwent revascularization procedures. In conclusion, patients with coronary artery disease and a normal exercise thallium-201 myocardial scintigram usually have mild coronary lesions (single-vessel disease, distal location) and good long-term prognosis, with a low incidence of cardiac deat
