Products of Random Matrices
We derive analytic expressions for infinite products of random 2x2 matrices.
The determinant of the target matrix is log-normally distributed, whereas the
remainder is a surprisingly complicated function of a parameter characterizing
the norm of the matrix and a parameter characterizing its skewness. The
distribution may have importance as an uncommitted prior in statistical image

Cross-Disciplinary Analysis of the On-Farm Transition from Conventional to Organic Vegetable Production
This farm-scale analysis of the three-year transition to organic from conventional vegetable production tracked the changes in crop, soil, pest and management on two ranches (40 and 47 ha) in the Salinas Valley, California. Many small plantings of a diverse set of cash crop and cover crop species were used, as compared to only a few species in large monocultures in conventional production. The general trends with time were: increase in soil biological indicators, low soil nitrate pools, adequate crop nutrients, minor disease and weed problems, and sporadic mild insect damage. Some crops and cultivars consistently produced higher yields than others, relative to the maximum yield for a given crop. Differences in insect and disease damage were also observed. These results support the value of initially using a biodiverse set of taxa to reduce risk, then later choosing the best-suited varieties for optimal production. The grower used some principles of organic farming (e.g., crop diversity, crop rotation, and organic matter management), but also relied on substitution-based management, such as fertigation with soluble nutrients, initially heavy applications of organic pesticides, and use of inputs derived from off-farm sources. SitesBase: a database for structure-based protein–ligand binding site comparisons
There are many components which govern the function of a protein within a cell. Here, we focus on the molecular recognition of small molecules and the prediction of common recognition by similarity between protein–ligand binding sites. SitesBase is an easily accessible database which is simple to use and holds information about structural similarities between known ligand binding sites found in the Protein Data Bank. These similarities are presented to the wider community enabling full analysis of molecular recognition and potentially protein structure–function relationships. SitesBase is accessible at
Cholinergic suppression: A postsynaptic mechanism of long-term associative learning
Food avoidance learning in the mollusc Pleurobranchaea entails reduction in the responsiveness of key brain interneurons in the feeding neural circuitry, the paracerebral feeding command interneurons (PCNs), to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (AcCho). Food stimuli applied to the oral veil of an untrained animal depolarize the PCNs and induce the feeding motor program (FMP). Atropine (a muscarinic cholinergic antagonist) reversibly blocks the food-induced depolarization of the PCNs, implicating AcCho as the neurotransmitter mediating food detection. AcCho applied directly to PCN somata depolarizes them, indicating that the PCN soma membrane contains AcCho receptors and induces the FMP in the isolated central nervous system preparation. The AcCho response of the PCNs is mediated by muscariniclike receptors, since comparable depolarization is induced by muscarinic agonists (acetyl-Ăź -methylcholine, oxotremorine, pilocarpine), but not nicotine, and blocked by muscarinic antagonists (atropine, trifluoperazine). The nicotinic antagonist hexamethonium, however, blocked the AcCho response in four of six cases. When specimens are trained to suppress feeding behavior using a conventional food-avoidance learning paradigm (conditionally paired food and shock), AcCho applied to PCNs in the same concentration as in untrained animals causes little or no depolarization and does not initiate the FMP. Increasing the concentration of AcCho 10-100 times, however, induces weak PCN depolarization in trained specimens, indicating that learning diminishes but does not fully abolish AcCho responsiveness of the PCNs. Basin-Fill Stratigraphy, Quaternary History, and Paleomagnetics of the Eagle Flat Study Area, Southern Hudspeth County, Texas
Data and analyses of basin-fill stratigraphy, paleomagnetics, Quaternary history, and pseudo-fissures/fissures were acquired and interpreted by the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) in the Eagle Flat study area in southern Hudspeth County, Texas. These investigations were funded by the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Authority (the Authority) as part of the evaluation of a proposed site for the Texas low-level radioactive waste repository. Data and information developed as a result of these investigations will be used to evaluate the proposed waste repository site and surrounding region and to provide data for performance assessment, design, and licensing activities. Basin-fill sediments are composed predominantly of sandy mud and mud; sands are abundant at the surface in the vicinity of the proposed repository site, and gravels are abundant at the base of the basin fill adjacent to the bedrock. Basin-fill thickness ranges from 163 ft (50 m) on the southeast side of the proposed site to 715 ft (218 m) on the northeast side of the proposed site. Basin-fill thickness is approximately 200 ft (61 m) on the west side of the proposed site. Coarser basin-fill deposits are interpreted as proximal alluvial fans and colluvium, and finer sands and muds are interpreted as ephemeral stream, distal alluvial fan, alluvial flat, and eolian deposits. At the proposed site, near-surface fine gravel and coarse to fine sand deposits exhibit characteristics consistent with fluvial deposition. Some well-sorted fine-grained sands have textures consistent with eolian sediments. Fine-grained sands and muds are interpreted as distal alluvial fan and ephemeral stream deposits.Bureau of Economic Geolog
