Integrated process planning for a hybrid manufacturing system
A hybrid manufacturing system integrated CNC machining and laser-aided layered deposition and achieves the benefits of both processes. In this dissertation, an integrated process planning framework which aims to automate the hybrid manufacturing process is investigated. Critical components of the process planning, including 3D spatial decomposition of the CAD model, improvement of the toolpath generation pattern, repairing strategies using a hybrid manufacturing system, etc., are discussed --Abstract, page iv
Laser Deposition Cladding On-Line Inspection Using 3-D Scanner
Laser deposition directly deposits metal cladding to fabricate and repair components. In
order to finish the fabrication or repair, 3-D shape of the deposition needs to be inspected, and
thus it can be determined if it has sufficient cladding to fabricate a part after deposition process.
In the present hybrid system in the Laser Aided Manufacturing Lab (LAMP) at the University of
Missouri - Rolla, a CMM system is used to do the inspection. A CMM requires point-by-point
contact, which is time consuming and difficult to plan for an irregular deposition geometry. Also,
the CMM is a separate device, which requires removal of the part from the hybrid system, which
can induce fixture errors. The 3-D scanner is a non-contact tool to measure the 3-D shape of laser
deposition cladding which is fast and accurate. In this paper, A prototype non-contact 3-D
scanner approach has been implemented to inspect the free-form and complex parts built by laser
deposition. Registration of the measured model and 3-D CAD model allows
the comparison between the two models. It enables us to determine if the deposition is sufficient
before machining.Mechanical Engineerin
Part Repair using a Hybrid Manufacturing System
Nowadays, part repair technology is gaining more interest from military and industries
due to the benefit of cost reducing as well as time and energy saving. Traditionally, part
repair is done in the repair department using welding process. The limitations of the
traditional welding process are becoming more and more noticeable when the accuracy
and reliability are required. Part repair process has been developed utilizing a hybrid
manufacturing system, in which the laser aided deposition and CNC cutting processes are
integrated. Part repair software is developed in order to facilitate the users. The system
and the software elevate the repair process to the next level, in which the accuracy,
reliability, and efficiency can be achieved. The concept of repair process is presented in
this paper. Verification and experimental results are also discussed.Mechanical Engineerin

Calcineurin B-Like Proteins CBL4 and CBL10 Mediate Two Independent Salt Tolerance Pathways in Arabidopsis.
In Arabidopsis, the salt overly sensitive (SOS) pathway, consisting of calcineurin B-like protein 4 (CBL4/SOS3), CBL-interacting protein kinase 24 (CIPK24/SOS2) and SOS1, has been well defined as a crucial mechanism to control cellular ion homoeostasis by extruding Na+ to the extracellular space, thus conferring salt tolerance in plants. CBL10 also plays a critical role in salt tolerance possibly by the activation of Na+ compartmentation into the vacuole. However, the functional relationship of the SOS and CBL10-regulated processes remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the genetic interaction between CBL4 and CBL10 and found that the cbl4 cbl10 double mutant was dramatically more sensitive to salt as compared to the cbl4 and cbl10 single mutants, suggesting that CBL4 and CBL10 each directs a different salt-tolerance pathway. Furthermore, the cbl4 cbl10 and cipk24 cbl10 double mutants were more sensitive than the cipk24 single mutant, suggesting that CBL10 directs a process involving CIPK24 and other partners different from the SOS pathway. Although the cbl4 cbl10, cipk24 cbl10, and sos1 cbl10 double mutants showed comparable salt-sensitive phenotype to sos1 at the whole plant level, they all accumulated much lower Na+ as compared to sos1 under high salt conditions, suggesting that CBL10 regulates additional unknown transport processes that play distinct roles from the SOS1 in Na+ homeostasis
