The Demographic Transition and the Sexual Division of Labor
This paper presents a theory where increases in female labor force participation and reductions in the gender wage-gap are generated as part of a single process of demographic transition, characterized by reductions in mortality and fertility. The paper suggests a link between changes in mortality and transformations in the role of women in society that has not been identified before in the literature. Mortality reductions affect the incentives of individuals to invest in human capital and to have children. Particularly, gains in adult longevity reduce fertility, increase investments in market human capital, increase female labor force participation, and reduce the wage differential between men and women. Child mortality reductions, though reducing fertility, do not generate this same pattern of changes. The model reconciles the increase in female labor market participation with the timing of age-specific mortality reductions observed during the demographic transition. It generates changes in fertility, labor market attachment, and the gender wage-gap as part of a single process of social transformation, triggered by reductions in mortality.

Practice of walking and its association with perceived environment among elderly Brazilians living in a region of low socioeconomic level
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study was analyze associations between the practice of walking and environmental perception among elderly Brazilians in a region of low socioeconomic level.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional study was conducted among 385 elderly people aged 60 years and over. To evaluate walking, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), long version (leisure and transport modules) was used. The environment was evaluated by means of the Neighborhood Environmental Walkability Scale (NEWS) (adapted Brazilian version). For the statistical analysis, multiple logistic regression models were created separately for men and women. The practice of at least 150 minutes a week of walking was the dependent variable, and the variables of environmental perception were the independent variables. All the models were controlled for schooling level and age.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The proportion of elderly people active in walking was 56.9% for the men and 26.4% for the women. The perception of the presence of soccer fields (OR = 4.12) and their proximity, within ten minutes' walk from home (OR = 3.43), were associated with the practice of walking among the men. The perception of the presence of public squares (OR = 4.70) and the proximity of primary healthcare units, within ten minutes' walk from home (OR = 3.71), were associated with the practice of walking among the women. An association with adequate perception of vehicle traffic remained at the threshold of significance for the women.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Accessibility of leisure structures such as football fields and public squares and of health services such as primary healthcare units were important environmental variables associated with the practice of walking among elderly people living in a region of low socioeconomic level in Brazil. These variables need to be taken into consideration when aiming to promote the practice of walking among elderly people living in similar regions.</p
Dissemination of health-related research among scientists in three countries: Access to resources and current practices
Objectives. In public health and clinical settings insufficient dissemination of evidence-based practices limits the reach of new discoveries to broad populations. This study aimed to describe characteristics of the dissemination process by researchers across three countries (Brazil, United Kingdom, and United States), explore how designing for dissemination practices has been used, and analyze factors associated with dissemination. Methods. A similar online survey was used to query researchers across the three countries; data were pooled to draw cross-country conclusions. Findings. This study identified similarities and differences between countries. Importance of dissemination to nonresearcher audiences was widely recognized as important; however, traditional academic venues were the main dissemination method. Several factors were associated with self-rated dissemination effort in the pooled sample, but these predictive factors (e.g., support and resources for dissemination) had low prevalence. Less than one-third of researchers rated their level of effort for dissemination as excellent. Respondents reported limited support and resources to make it easier for researchers who might want to disseminate their findings. Conclusion. Though intentions show the importance of dissemination, researchers across countries lack supports to increase dissemination efforts. Additional resources and training in designing for dissemination along with improved partnerships could help bridge the research-practice gap
Organizational supports for research evidence use in state public health agencies: A latent class analysis
OBJECTIVE: Use of research evidence in public health decision making can be affected by organizational supports. Study objectives are to identify patterns of organizational supports and explore associations with research evidence use for job tasks among public health practitioners.
DESIGN: In this longitudinal study, we used latent class analysis to identify organizational support patterns, followed by mixed logistic regression analysis to quantify associations with research evidence use.
SETTING: The setting included 12 state public health department chronic disease prevention units and their external partnering organizations involved in chronic disease prevention.
PARTICIPANTS: Chronic disease prevention staff from 12 US state public health departments and partnering organizations completed self-report surveys at 2 time points, in 2014 and 2016 (N = 872).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Latent class analysis was employed to identify subgroups of survey participants with distinct patterns of perceived organizational supports. Two classify-analyze approaches (maximum probability assignment and multiple pseudo-class draws) were used in 2017 to investigate the association between latent class membership and research evidence use.
RESULTS: The optimal model identified 4 latent classes, labeled as unsupportive workplace, low agency leadership support, high agency leadership support, and supportive workplace. With maximum probability assignment, participants in high agency leadership support (odds ratio = 2.08; 95% CI, 1.35-3.23) and supportive workplace (odds ratio = 1.74; 95% CI, 1.10-2.74) were more likely to use research evidence in job tasks than unsupportive workplace. The multiple pseudo-class draws produced comparable results with odds ratio = 2.09 (95% CI, 1.31-3.30) for high agency leadership support and odds ratio = 1.74 (95% CI, 1.07-2.82) for supportive workplace.
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that leadership support may be a crucial element of organizational supports to encourage research evidence use. Organizational supports such as supervisory expectations, access to evidence, and participatory decision making may need leadership support as well to improve research evidence use in public health job tasks
Association between the perceived environment and physical activity among adults in Latin America: a systematic review
BACKGROUND: Activity friendly environments have been identified as promising strategies to increase physical activity levels in the population. Associations between perceived environmental attributes and physical activity in Latin America may vary from those observed in high income countries. The objective of this systematic review is to identify which perceived environmental attributes are associated with physical activity in Latin America. METHODS: Systematic literature search of articles published in English, Portuguese, and Spanish in four databases was conducted (PubMed, Virtual Health Library, EBSCO, and Web of Science). Associations with environmental attributes were analyzed separately for physical activity domains. Fifteen articles were included in the analysis. RESULTS: All studies had cross-sectional designs. The majority of associations were statistically non-significant, and only four associations were found in the unexpected direction. Leisure-time and transport-related physical activity were the domains most frequently included in the studies and had higher number of associations in the expected direction. Leisure-time physical activity showed a convincing association in the expected direction with safety during the day. Transport-related physical activity had a convincing association with presence of street lighting. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that perceived environmental attributes and their relationship with physical activity appears to be domain, and context specific. In addition, findings from this study show inconsistencies with the information gathered from high-income countries
Phosphate deficiency alters transcript isoforms via alternative transcription start sites.
Alternative transcription start sites (TSS) are widespread in eukaryotes and can alter the 5' UTR length and coding potential of transcripts. Here we show that inorganic phosphate (Pi) availability regulates the usage of several alternative TSS in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). In comparison to phytohormone treatment, Pi had a pronounced and specific effect on the usage of many alternative TSS. By combining short-read RNA sequencing with long-read sequencing of full-length mRNAs, we identified a set of 45 genes showing alternative TSS under Pi deficiency. Alternative TSS affected several processes, such as translation via the exclusion of upstream open reading frames present in the 5' UTR of RETICULAN LIKE PROTEIN B1 mRNA, and subcellular localization via removal of the plastid transit peptide coding region from the mRNAs of HEME OXYGENASE 1 and SULFOQUINOVOSYLDIACYLGLYCEROL 2. Several alternative TSS also generated shorter transcripts lacking the coding potential for important domains. For example, the EVOLUTIONARILY CONSERVED C-TERMINAL REGION 4 (ECT4) locus, which encodes an N6-methyladenosine (m6A) reader, strongly expressed under Pi deficiency a short noncoding transcript (named ALTECT4) ~550 nt long with a TSS in the penultimate intron. The specific and robust induction of ALTECT4 production by Pi deficiency led to the identification of a role for m6A readers in primary root growth in response to low phosphate that is dependent on iron and is involved in modulating cell division in the root meristem. Our results identify alternative TSS usage as an important process in the plant response to Pi deficiency
Developing a Tool to Assess Administrative Evidence-Based Practices in Local Health Departments
There is need for assessing the practices undertaken by local health departments in order to improve the implementation of evidence-based actions. This paper describes the development and testing of a survey instrument for assessing Administrative Evidence-Based Practices (A-EBPs) in Local Health Departments. A-EBPs identified through a review of the literature were used to develop a survey composed of nine sections and tested in a sample of local health department practitioners. The resulting tool showed adequate test-retest reliability and internal consistency. Practitioners and researchers may apply this tool in practice-based and evaluation research
What Influences the Use of Administrative Evidence-Based Practices in Local Health Departments?
Evidence based public health (EBPH) in local health departments (LHDs) is a process that involves translating the best available scientific evidence into practice. However, EBPH and implementation of evidence based programs and policies in LHDs are not widespread. This report outlines the patterns and predictors of the use of administrative evidence based practices (A-EBPs) in a national sample of LHD directors. LHDs can improve performance, prepare for accreditation and ultimately improve community health by utilizing an administrative evidence based process
