    Brown dwarfs in the Hyades and beyond?

    We have used both the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrograph and the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck telescopes to obtain spectra of twelve candidate members of the Hyades cluster identified by Leggett and Hawkins (1988, 1989). All of the objects are chromospherically-active, late-type M-dwarfs, with Hα\alpha equivalent widths varying from 1 to 30\AA. Based on our measured radial velocities, the level of stellar activity and other spectroscopic features, only one of the twelve stars has properties consistent with cluster membership. We consider how this result affects estimates of the luminosity and mass function of the Hyades cluster. Five of the eleven field stars have weak K I 7665/7699\AA and CaH absorption as compared with M-dwarf standards of the same spectral type, suggesting a lower surface gravity. Two of these sources, LH0416+14 and LH0419+15, exhibit significant lithium 6708 \AA absorption. Based partly on parallax measurements by the US Naval Observatory (Harris et al, 1998), we identify all five as likely to be young, pre-main sequence objects in or near the Taurus-Auriga association at distances of between 150 and 250 parsecs.     The \chi Factor: Determining the Strength of Activity in Low Mass Dwarfs

    We describe a new, distance-independent method for calculating the magnetic activity strength in low mass dwarfs, L_{H\alpha}/L_{bol}. Using a well-observed sample of nearby stars and cool standards spanning spectral type M0.5 to L0, we compute ``\chi'', the ratio between the continuum flux near H-alpha and the bolometric flux, f_{\lambda6560}/f_{bol}. This ratio may be multiplied by the measured equivalent width of the H-alpha emission line to yield L_{H\alpha}/L_{bol}. We provide \chi values for all objects in our sample, as well as fits to \chi as a function of color and average values by spectral type. This method was used by West et al.(2004) to examine trends in magnetic activity strength in low mass stars.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in PAS

    5-micron photometry of late-type dwarfs

    We present narrowband-M photometry of nine low-mass dwarfs with spectral types ranging from M2.5 to L0.5. Combining the (L'-M') colours derived from our observations with data from the literature, we find colours consistent with a Rayleigh-Jeans flux distribution for spectral types earlier than M5, but enhanced F_3.8/F_4.7 flux ratios (negative (L'-M') colours) at later spectral types. This probably reflects increased absorption at M' due to the CO fundamental band. We compare our results against recent model predictions and briefly discuss the implications.Comment: accepted for the Astronomical Journa

    Conservation of connectivity of model-space effective interactions under a class of similarity transformation

    Effective interaction operators usually act on a restricted model space and give the same energies (for Hamiltonian) and matrix elements (for transition operators etc.) as those of the original operators between the corresponding true eigenstates. Various types of effective operators are possible. Those well defined effective operators have been shown being related to each other by similarity transformation. Some of the effective operators have been shown to have connected-diagram expansions. It is shown in this paper that under a class of very general similarity transformations, the connectivity is conserved. The similarity transformation between hermitian and non-hermitian Rayleigh-Schr\"{o}dinger perturbative effective operators is one of such transformation and hence the connectivity can be deducted from each other.Comment: 12 preprint page

    Numerical investigation of high-pressure combustion in rocket engines using Flamelet/Progress-variable models

    The present paper deals with the numerical study of high pressure LOx/H2 or LOx/hydrocarbon combustion for propulsion systems. The present research effort is driven by the continued interest in achieving low cost, reliable access to space and more recently, by the renewed interest in hypersonic transportation systems capable of reducing time-to-destination. Moreover, combustion at high pressure has been assumed as a key issue to achieve better propulsive performance and lower environmental impact, as long as the replacement of hydrogen with a hydrocarbon, to reduce the costs related to ground operations and increase flexibility. The current work provides a model for the numerical simulation of high- pressure turbulent combustion employing detailed chemistry description, embedded in a RANS equations solver with a Low Reynolds number k-omega turbulence model. The model used to study such a combustion phenomenon is an extension of the standard flamelet-progress-variable (FPV) turbulent combustion model combined with a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation Solver (RANS). In the FPV model, all of the thermo-chemical quantities are evaluated by evolving the mixture fraction Z and a progress variable C. When using a turbulence model in conjunction with FPV model, a probability density function (PDF) is required to evaluate statistical averages of chemical quantities. The choice of such PDF must be a compromise between computational costs and accuracy level. State- of-the-art FPV models are built presuming the functional shape of the joint PDF of Z and C in order to evaluate Favre-averages of thermodynamic quantities. The model here proposed evaluates the most probable joint distribution of Z and C without any assumption on their behavior.Comment: presented at AIAA Scitech 201

    Large Magnetic Fields and Motions of OH Masers in W75 N

    We report on a second epoch of VLBA observations of the 1665 and 1667 MHz OH masers in the massive star-forming region W75 N. We find evidence to confirm the existence of very strong (~40 mG) magnetic fields near source VLA 2. The masers near VLA 2 are dynamically distinct and include a very bright spot apparently moving at 50 km/s relative to those around VLA 1. This fast-moving spot may be an example of a rare class of OH masers seen in outflows in star-forming regions. Due to the variability of these masers and the rapidity of their motions, tracking these motions will require multiple observations over a significantly shorter time baseline than obtained here. Proper motions of the masers near VLA 1 are more suggestive of streaming along magnetized shocks rather than Keplerian rotation in a disk.     Stellar Populations and Variable Stars in the Core of the Globular Cluster M5

    We report the discovery of a variable blue straggler in the core of the globular cluster M5, based on a 12-hour long series of images obtained with the Planetary Camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition, we present the light curves of 28 previously unknown or poorly studied large-amplitude variable stars (all but one are RR Lyrae) in the cluster core. A (V, U-I) color-magnitude diagram shows 24 blue stragglers within 2 core radii of the cluster center.     Toward a New Distance to the Active Galaxy NGC 4258: II. Centripetal Accelerations and Investigation of Spiral Structure

    We report measurements of centripetal accelerations of maser spectral components of NGC 4258 for 51 epochs spanning 1994 to 2004. This is the second paper of a series, in which the goal is determination of a new geometric maser distance to NGC 4258 accurate to possibly ~3%. We measure accelerations using a formal analysis method that involves simultaneous decomposition of maser spectra for all epochs into multiple, Gaussian components. Components are coupled between epochs by linear drifts (accelerations) from their centroid velocities at a reference epoch. For high-velocity emission, accelerations lie in the range -0.7 to +0.7 km/s/yr indicating an origin within 13 degrees of the disk midline (the perpendicular to the line-of-sight to the black hole). Comparison of high-velocity emission projected positions in VLBI images, with those derived from acceleration data, provides evidence that masers trace real gas dynamics. High-velocity emission accelerations do not support a model of trailing shocks associated with spiral arms in the disk. However, we find strengthened evidence for spatial periodicity in high-velocity emission, of wavelength 0.75 mas. This supports suggestions of spiral structure due to density waves in the nuclear accretion disk of an active galaxy. Accelerations of low-velocity (systemic) emission lie in the range 7.7 to 8.9 km/s/yr, consistent with emission originating from a concavity where the thin, warped disk is tangent to the line-of-sight. A trend in accelerations of low-velocity emission as a function of Doppler velocity may be associated with disk geometry and orientation, or with the presence of spiral structure.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 48 pages and 20 figure

    The community involvement of nursing and medical practitioners in KwaZulu-Natal

    BackgroundThe basis of the health system in South Africa is purported to be primary health care (PHC), as defined by the Alma Ata Declaration of 1978. This approach emphasises community involvement in all health-related activities, but it would appear that a very limited or selective PHC approach is actually being pursued in South Africa, without meaningful community participation or ownership. This study explores the involvement of exemplary medical and nursing clinical practitioners in non-clinical community-wide activities in terms of the primary health care approach, which demands a broader scope of practice than primary medical care.MethodsThe objectives of the study were to identify exemplary medical and nurse practitioners in primary health care, to document their practices and perceptions with regard to their community involvement, to analyse the common themes arising from the findings, and to present recommendations based on the findings. Seventeen primary care clinicians in KwaZulu-Natal, half of whom were professional nurses and the rest medical practitioners, were purposively selected through their district managers. A team of four medical students was trained to collect the data and interviewed the subjects in their places of work using open-ended questions. The interviews were recorded, translated where necessary, and transcribed. Content analysis was carried out as a team, with the identification of major and minor themes.ResultsThe findings of this study were consistent with studies from other countries, with some interesting differences. The major themes that emerged from the data included the wide range of activities that subjects were involved in, the importance of relationships, the context of poverty, the frustrations of this kind of work, and the respondents' motivations. These are illustrated by numerous verbatim quotes from the respondents. Minor themes were the roles that the respondents play in the community, the difficulty of obtaining funding, and experiences in starting up. Significantly, the fact that the role of clinicians in the community emerged as only a minor theme rather than a major theme in this study indicates the absence of expectation and policy in this area of practice in South Africa. In the light of the supposed centrality of the primary healthcare approach in the national health system, this is a serious gap. ConclusionThe lack of a clearly defined role in the community outside of the clinical role that deals with the individual patient who presents for care is discussed in relation to the policy of the primary health care approach. The concept of community-oriented primary care provides a framework for a more systematic approach to community engagement, and this study serves as a basis for further research into the subject.For full text, click here:SA Fam Pract 2006;48(8):16-16

    Small-Column Cesium Ion Exchange Elution Testing of Spherical Resorcinol-Formaldehyde

    This report summarizes the work performed to evaluate multiple, cesium loading, and elution cycles for small columns containing SRF resin using a simple, high-level waste (HLW) simulant. Cesium ion exchange loading and elution curves were generated for a nominal 5 M Na, 2.4E-05 M Cs, 0.115 M Al loading solution traced with 134Cs followed by elution with variable HNO3 (0.02, 0.07, 0.15, 0.23, and 0.28 M) containing variable CsNO3 (5.0E-09, 5.0E-08, and 5.0E-07 M) and traced with 137Cs. The ion exchange system consisted of a pump, tubing, process solutions, and a single, small ({approx}15.7 mL) bed of SRF resin with a water-jacketed column for temperature-control. The columns were loaded with approximately 250 bed volumes (BVs) of feed solution at 45 C and at 1.5 to 12 BV per hour (0.15 to 1.2 cm/min). The columns were then eluted with 29+ BVs of HNO3 processed at 25 C and at 1.4 BV/h. The two independent tracers allowed analysis of the on-column cesium interaction between the loading and elution solutions. The objective of these tests was to improve the correlation between the spent resin cesium content and cesium leached out of the resin in subsequent loading cycles (cesium leakage) to help establish acid strength and purity requirements
