    A survey instrument design to determine the success factors in implementing the end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) management system in Malaysia

    This paper presents the design of a survey instrument in order to determine the success factors in implementing the end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) management system in Malaysia. Upon reviewing journal articles and research papers previously conducted in automotive recycling, end of-life vehicles, success factors and green supply chain, a set of preliminary factors was identified.These factors were categorized into seven components, namely the government commitment,stakeholders commitment, resources availability, enforcement and monitoring, education and awareness, market structure and continuous improvement. Thirty items were listed in the questionnaire, where the statements were based on the above said seven factors. Other than that,target respondents and sampling size were also discussed

    Design Improvement of Auditorium Seating: A Case Study at Pagoh Education Hub

    This study is concerned about the auditorium seating design based on the ergonomics concept. Ergonomics is the science of fitting the product to its users or fitting the job to the worker. This study is carried out at Pagoh Education Hub Shared Facility Auditorium. The main objective of this study is to assess the ergonomics posture of users using auditorium’s seating. The poor design of furniture may be possibly cause incorrect posture which will further lead to health problems such as back pain and spinal distortion. The Kinovea software is utilized to measure the posture. Each measurement of different body part posture is assessed by using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) in order to indicate the risk level of the auditorium’s seating. The REBA score of the existing auditorium’s seating is 7 indicating medium risk which requires further study for improvement. The second objective of this study is to redesign the auditorium’s seating based on the ergonomics concept. The proposed design of auditorium’s seating uses SolidWorks software by referring to the guideline from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia (DOSH). The desired features such as headrest and armrest are added to the proposed design. The REBA score of the proposed seat design is 3 which indicate significant improvement compared to REBA score of the current design, in terms of ergonomics factors

    Key success factors in establishing end-of-life vehicle management system: a primer for Malaysia

    In Malaysia, end-of-life vehicles are not properly managed. Their number keeps growing, as reflected by the increasing number of produced and registered vehicles every year. Improper management of end-of-life vehicles endangers environment and social life in Malaysia. Excessive water, air and soil pollution are among the primary effects of improper end-of-life vehicle management. These negative impacts have led to an initiative to develop a framework for establishing end-of-life vehicle management system in Malaysia. A set of preliminary factors and underlying items have been identified from previous research efforts. Then, a large survey, with 300 respondents comprising of vehicle manufacturers and distributors, part dealers, and end-of-life vehicle collectors; and high response rate, was conducted. Responses of the survey were factor-analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20. As a result, the eight success factors namely management responsibility, performance management, capacity management, resource management, stakeholder responsibility, education and awareness, improvement and awareness, and cost management in implementing end-of-life vehicle management system in Malaysia and 33 underlying items are identified and thoroughly discussed. By conducting reliability analysis, all eight success factors are determined to be reliable. Linear relationship among the factors is then confirmed using structural equation modeling. Upon confirmation, the proposed framework containing factors and items, can be valuable for supporting authorities in establishing end-of-life vehicle management system not only in Malaysia, but also in other countries without proper end-of-life vehicle management system

    Quarrying is valuable to society because its products are used to build roads, buildings, and other infrastructures that people depend on. The condition or environment and safety in the workplace especially in quarry industries should always pay attention to avoid any injuries, accidents, or any conflicts which at least reduces the seriousness of the conflict. The purpose of this study is to improve the workflow of the production in the company. Also aimed to study the workflow of production and analyzes the safety issue regarding the workplace. This study focused on the improvement of the factory design in XYZ Quarry product Sdn. Bhd related with safety. The improvement of layout involved the minimization of transportation cost, the relevant distance and time need is 3360 tons per day, and relocated the structure of the production process. The results are also concerned with improving safety in the workplace. In addition, the improvement of layout can reduce the cost of production. Besides, the safety improvement can help to reduce the medical cost for workers’ health care and improve the well-being of the workers

    Production planning improvement in a t-shirt printing company using Material Requirement Planning (MRP) approach: a case study

    Material requirement planning (MRP) is one of production planning and control (PPC) concept used for short-term scheduling. Sibawaih Ventures faced problem in handling customer order when their business receive more order than usual. A case study is conducted to T-shirt A production to assist Sibawaih Ventures in planning their production. By studying product structure of T-shirt A and dependency of each part, as well as lead time required to complete T-shirt A, MRP schedule is generated. MRP schedule shows that, Sibawaih Ventures can produce 800 t�shirts in 7 days time, thus, customer orders can be met in a timely manner. MRP schedule provides all information provided by production people to run production, while management can use MRP schedule to control and monitor production accordingly

    Sustainable lean supply chain to minimize waste in solar water heater production

    The Solar Water Heater Production company is dedicated to manufacturing and supplying new and renewable energy. However, the company needs help in meeting its production targets. This research aims to address this issue by improving the supply chain flow by implementing a sustainable lean supply chain. The research process involves several steps: 1) identifying gaps in activities within the supply chain flow through value chain analysis, 2) determining the types of waste, 3) constructing an Ishikawa Diagram, 4) calculating the Sustainability Index (SI), and 5) implementing improvements. The research results indicate a 10% increase in process cycle efficiency after implementing improvements. Additionally, process activity mapping identified eight movements, 34 instances of waiting, five defects, and five behavioural activities. The calculation of the SI also showed improvement, improving from 142% to 121%. In conclusion, the research approach has successfully reduced waste and enhanced production efficiency. It has been achieved by integrating economic, social, and environmental factors into the improvement process, leading to successful manufacturing practice

    This paper presents rationality behind the establishment of an ELVs management system in Malaysia, in relation with the development of automotive industry in this country. Upon reviews on latest publications, there are currently three conditions of ELVs treated in Malaysia which are used on road, left abandoned and dumped at landfill. These improper treatment and management of ELVs certainly will give negative effects to the country, which are explained in environment, economic and social aspects. Subsequently, a survey will be conducted to obtain estimated percentage of each ELV condition, and the survey results will be the basis towards establishing an ELVs management system in Malaysia

    Development of a performance evaluation tool for end-of-life vehicle management system implementation using the analytic hierarchy process

    The management of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) conserves natural resources, provides economic benefits, and reduces water, air, and soil pollution. In an effort to adequately manage flow of ELVs, modern infrastructure is considered a prerequisite. Thus, development of an effective performance evaluation tool for monitoring and continuous improvement of ELV management systems is strongly desired. In this paper, a performance evaluation tool is proposed for ELV management system implementation, based on the analytic hierarchy process. A real-life case study in Malaysia was conducted in order to demonstrate the potential and applicability of the presented methodology. The scores of eight key success factors in establishing an ELV management system (i.e., management responsibility, performance management, capacity management, resource management, stakeholders’ responsibility, education and awareness, improvement and enforcement, and cost management) are presented. The overall score of the ELV management system implementation in Malaysia is equal to 2.13. Therefore, its performance level is average. The presented multi-criteria decision analysis tool can be of assistance not only to stakeholders in the Malaysian ELV management system, but also to vehicle recycling managers from other countries in order to monitor and continuously improve their ELV management systems
