Homeless Mothers\u27 Perceptions of Parenting in Shelters

Descriptions of parenting in a homeless shelter were obtained from nine single mothers housed in one of two shelters in a major southwestern border metroplex. Case study methodology was used to obtain their perspectives on parenting in this unique context. Content analysis was used to organize and analyze emerging themes. Major themes that emerged from the study were (a) a lack of autonomy, (b) gaining access to material resources, (c) lack of privacy, (d) constant change and insecurity in the environment, (e) differing values, and (e) psychosocial support

Aims for Improvement Effective and clear communication in the operating room is a necessary aspect of any surgery. Every member of the operative team is integral in fostering an environment focused on patient safety. As such, the institution of a postoperative debrief session may allow for feedback from every member of the team that will ultimately aid in improving a patient’s experience

Does patient-provider race/ethnicity concordance impact outcomes for adults with lupus?

Background: Health disparities exist among the 1.5 million Americans with lupus, with women of color bearing higher disease rates and burden. Complex reasons include genetics, comorbidities, and socioeconomics. These factors may lead to differences in health-related outcomes in lupus. Aim: To determine if patient-provider racial/ethnic concordance plays a role in outcomes for adults with lupus. Method: For this scoping review, the authors searched PubMed Medline and CINAHL using keywords and subject headings for lupus, race or ethnicity, and patient-health professional concordance. Results: Despite an intentionally broadened search of literature, the authors identified a lack of studies examining the topic. Conclusions: Certain factors may explain the results: a lack of scientists studying the phenomenon, a focus of funding on bench science, and a non-diverse U.S. healthcare provider workforce. Other factors may exist. Implications for practice, policy, and research are presented

Measuring Relations Between Concepts In Conceptual Spaces

The highly influential framework of conceptual spaces provides a geometric way of representing knowledge. Instances are represented by points in a high-dimensional space and concepts are represented by regions in this space. Our recent mathematical formalization of this framework is capable of representing correlations between different domains in a geometric way. In this paper, we extend our formalization by providing quantitative mathematical definitions for the notions of concept size, subsethood, implication, similarity, and betweenness. This considerably increases the representational power of our formalization by introducing measurable ways of describing relations between concepts.Comment: Accepted at SGAI 2017 (http://www.bcs-sgai.org/ai2017/). Reshaping Health Care Delivery for Adolescent Parents: Healthy Steps and Telemedicine

This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/153056203772744725.Healthy Steps over Telemedicine uses telemedicine technology to bring child development services to adolescent parents in an urban school district. Videoconferencing units link teen parents at a Kansas City high school to developmental specialists and physicians at the Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC). Program participants receive developmental services and valuable health care information without leaving the school. The Healthy Steps goals are to educate parents about health care issues and to help them access medical care for their children and themselves. The telehealth goals are to implement the established Health Steps program effectively over the new medium. This article describes the process of delivering Healthy Steps services via telemedicine, specifically, selection and description of the site, selection of the technology, services provided, research evaluation, and lessons learned
