The construction and validation of techniques for self-development in rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation for music education majors.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThis study is an investigation by the author in the area of music dictation and adopts the form of a scientific experiment. The purpose of the experiment is as follows: 1. To construct, tape, and validate a series of graded exercises of increasing difficulty for rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation. 2. To compare the progress to be achieved by an Experimental Group that takes dictation of the above exercises reproduced by tape recorder without any active teaching on the part of the instructor, with that of a Control Group which takes dictation of the same exercises in regular class lessons. The entire experiment is threefold: 1. Experiment in Rhythmic Dictation. 2. Experiment in Melodic Dictation. 3. Experiment in Harmonic Dictation. [TRUNCATED

The Holographic Interpretation of Hawking Radiation

Holography gives us a tool to view the Hawking effect from a new, classical perspective. In the context of Randall-Sundrum braneworld models, we show that the basic features of four-dimensional evaporating solutions are nicely translated into classical five-dimensional language. This includes the dual bulk description of particles tunneling through the horizon.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, Honorable Mention in the Gravity Research Foundation Essay Competition 200

Assessing the performance of XDP and AF-XDP based NFs in edge data center scenarios

    Get PDF
While servers in traditional data centers can be specialized to run either CPU-intensive or network-intensive workloads, edge data centers need to consolidate both on the same machine(s) due to the reduced number of servers. This paper presents some preliminary experiments to determine how to improve the overall throughput of the above servers, being XDP and AF_XDP the two main technologies into play

Managing the mining cycle using GeoVisionary

    Get PDF
Managing the mining cycle from exploration through to evaluation, planning, construction, operation and finally mine closure can involve many datasets in different formats. To be able to visualise all of these different datasets in one environment is important to locate mineral/ore deposits, moderate risks, increase mining efficiency, monitor the impact on the surrounding environment and communicate these factors to stakeholders. Typically, GIS – Geographical Information Systems have been used to manage the life cycle of a mine, however the three dimensional (3D) complexity is lost in these two dimensional (2D) systems. Virtalis alongside the British Geological Survey, have developed the GeoVisionary software which provides the means to aid the management of many aspects of the life cycle of a mine using a combination 2D, 3D and 4D data in the same virtual environment

Attenuation of Lightning-Induced Effects on Overhead Distribution Systems in Urban Areas

    Get PDF
Overhead distribution systems can be strongly affected and damaged by indirect lightning. The induced voltages are usually computed neglecting the surrounding geometry and the presence of buildings in urban areas. Buildings can strongly change the behavior of the measured lighting-induced electromagnetic (EM) fields in the proximity of the point of impact. As a consequence, induced voltages can deviate from what would be measured in the absence of buildings. This work proposes an analysis of the main variables, which affect the deviation of the EM fields and of the consequent induced voltages along an overhead distribution line due to the presence of a building. Different distances between the line and the building and different building heights are considered

Multiphysics analyses of the effect of package on the performances of PMUT transducers

    Get PDF
The paper deals with the multiphysics modeling of piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducers (PMUT), that can be used in several practical applications. The model accounts for the multiple couplings between the mechanical fields and the electric and acoustic ones. The numerical solution has been sought by means of the finite element method, for the special case of axial symmetry. The model has been validated with reference to experimental data, that have been obtained by the Authors. The numerical procedure has been applied to carry out a parametric analysis of the effect of package, to extract a set of design guidelines

The three-body recombination of a condensed Bose gas near a Feshbach resonance

In this paper, we study the three-body recombination rate of a homogeneous dilute Bose gas with a Feshbach resonance at zero temperature. The ground state and excitations of this system are obtained. The three-body recombination in the ground state is due to the break-up of an atom pair in the quantum depletion and the formation of a molecule by an atom from the broken pair and an atom from the condensate. The rate of this process is in good agreement with the experiment on 23^{23}Na in a wide range of magnetic fields.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

Primary Voltage and Frequency Regulation in Inverter Based Islanded Microgrids through a Model Predictive Control Approach

    Get PDF
A frequency and voltage control strategy based on a decentralized and communication-less approach is proposed in this work and applied to Photovoltaic-Storage-Microturbine islanded Microgrids (MGs). The approach is based on the Model Predictive Control (MPC) technique. Thanks to the use of local measurements, each source can nullify the steady-state voltage and frequency errors by means of a dedicated MPC controller. Consequently, the proposed approach unifies the advantages of classic droop and master/slave controllers due to the absence of communication links among devices and due to the absence of a secondary centralized control loop
