Sequences of reflection functors and the preprojective component of a valued quiver
This paper concerns preprojective representations of a finite connected
valued quiver without oriented cycles. For each such representation, an
explicit formula in terms of the geometry of the quiver gives a unique, up to a
certain equivalence, shortest (+)-admissible sequence such that the
corresponding composition of reflection functors annihilates the
representation. The set of equivalence classes of the above sequences is a
partially ordered set that contains a great deal of information about the
preprojective component of the Auslander-Reiten quiver. The results apply to
the study of reduced words in the Weyl group associated to an indecomposable
symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix
Phonons in intrinsic Josephson systems with parallel magnetic field
Subgap resonances in the I-V curves of layered superconductors are explained
by the coupling between Josephson oscillations and phonons with dispersion in
c-direction. In the presence of a magnetic field applied parallel to the layers
additional structures due to fluxon motion appear. Their coupling with phonons
is investigated theoretically and a shift of the phonon resonances in strong
magnetic fields is predicted.Comment: Invited Paper to the "2nd International Symposium on Intrinsic

3-junction SQUID rocking ratchet
We investigate 3-junction SQUIDs which show voltage rectification if biased
with an ac current drive with zero mean value. The Josephson phase across the
SQUID experiences an effective ratchet potential, and the device acts as an
efficient rocking ratchet, as demonstrated experimentally for adiabatic and
nonadiabatic drive frequencies. For high-frequency drives the rectified voltage
is quantized due to synchronization of the phase dynamics with the external
drive. The experimental data are in excellent agreement with numerical
simulations including thermal fluctuations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures -- Fig.4 revise
Microscopic Analysis of Low-Frequency Flux Noise in YBaCuO Direct Current Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices
We use low-temperature scanning electron microscopy combined with SQUID
detection of magnetic flux to image vortices and to investigate low-frequency
flux noise in YBaCuO thin film SQUIDs. The low-frequency flux noise
shows a nonlinear increase with magnetic cooling field up to 60 T. This
effect is explained by the surface potential barrier at the SQUID hole. By
correlating flux noise data with the spatial distribution of vortices, we
obtain information on spatial fluctuations of vortices on a microscopic scale,
e.g. an average vortex hopping length of approximately 10 nm.Comment: submitted to Applied Physics Letter
Intrinsic Tunneling in Cuprates and Manganites
The most anisotropic high temperature superconductors like Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, as
well as the recently discovered layered manganite La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 are layered
metallic systems where the interlayer current transport occurs via sequential
tunneling of charge carriers. As a consequence, in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 adjacent CuO2
double layers form an intrinsic Josephson tunnel junction while in in
La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 tunneling of spin polarized charge carriers between adjacent
MnO2 layers leads to an intrinsic spin valve effect. We present and discuss
interlayer transport experiments for both systems. To perform the experiments
small sized mesa structures were patterned on top of single crystals of the
above materials defining stacks of a small number of intrinsic Josephson
junctions and intrinsic spin valves, respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
The design and construction of the CAD-1 airship
The background history, design philosophy and Computer application as related to the design of the envelope shape, stress calculations and flight trajectories of the CAD-1 airship, now under construction by Canadian Airship Development Corporation are reported. A three-phase proposal for future development of larger cargo carrying airships is included
