Photometric and spectroscopic study of the intermediate-age open cluster NGC 2355
In this paper we analyse the evolutionary status and properties of the old
open cluster NGC 2355, located in the Galactic anticentre direction, as a part
of the long term programme BOCCE. NGC 2355 was observed with LBC@LBT using the
Bessel , , and filters. The cluster parameters have been obtained
using the synthetic colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) method, as done in other
papers of this series. Additional spectroscopic observations with FIES@NOT of
three giant stars were used to determine the chemical properties of the
cluster. Our analysis shows that NGC 2355 has metallicity slightly less than
solar, with [Fe/H] dex, age between 0.8 and 1 Gyr, reddening
in the range 0.14 and 0.19 mag, and distance modulus of about 11 mag.
We also investigated the abundances of O, Na, Al, , iron-peak, and
neutron capture elements, showing that NGC 2355 falls within the abundance
distribution of similar clusters (same age and metallicity). The Galactocentric
distance of NGC~2355 places it at the border between two regimes of metallicity
distribution; this makes it an important cluster for the study of the chemical

Large Binocular Telescope observations of PSR J2043+2740
We present the results of deep optical imaging of the radio/-ray
pulsar PSR J2043+2740, obtained with the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). With
a characteristic age of 1.2 Myr, PSR J2043+2740 is one of the oldest (non
recycled) pulsars detected in -rays, although with still a quite high
rotational energy reservoir ( erg
s). The presumably close distance (a few hundred pc), suggested by the
hydrogen column density ( cm),
would make it a viable target for deep optical observations, never attempted
until now. We observed the pulsar with the Large Binocular Camera of the LBT.
The only object (V=25.440.05) detected within ~3" from the pulsar radio
coordinates is unrelated to it. PSR J2043+2740 is, thus, undetected down to
V~26.6 (3-), the deepest limit on its optical emission. We discuss the

Variable stars and stellar populations in Andromeda XXI: II. Another merged galaxy satellite of M31?
B and V time-series photometry of the M31 dwarf spheroidal satellite
Andromeda XXI (And XXI) was obtained with the Large Binocular Cameras at the
Large Binocular Telescope. We have identified 50 variables in And XXI, of which
41 are RR Lyrae stars (37 fundamental-mode RRab, and 4 first-overtone RRc,
pulsators) and 9 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs). The average period of the RRab
stars ( = 0.64 days) and the period-amplitude diagram place And~XXI in the
class of Oosterhoff II - Oosterhoff-Intermediate objects. From the average
luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars we derived the galaxy distance modulus of
(m-M)= mag, which is smaller than previous literature
estimates, although still consistent with them within 1 . The galaxy
color-magnitude diagram shows evidence for the presence of three different
stellar generations in And~XXI: 1) an old ( 12 Gyr) and metal poor
([Fe/H]=1.7 dex) component traced by the RR Lyrae stars; 2) a slightly
younger (10-6 Gyr) and more metal rich ([Fe/H]=1.5 dex) component populating
the red horizontal branch, and 3) a young age ( 1 Gyr) component with
same metallicity, that produced the ACs. Finally, we provide hints that And~XXI
could be the result of a minor merging event between two dwarf galaxies.Comment: accepted for publications in Ap
Seasonal and event-based hydrological and slope stability modeling of pyroclastic fall deposits covering slopes in Campania (Southern Italy)
The pyroclastic fall deposits mantling mountain slopes in the Campania region (Southern Italy) represent one of the most studied geomorphological frameworks of the world regarding rainfall-induced debris flows threating urban areas. The proposed study focused on advancing knowledge about the hydrological response of pyroclastic fall coverings from the seasonal to event-based time scales, leading to the initiation of slope instability. The study was based on two consequential tasks. The first was the analysis of a six-year monitoring of soil pressure head carried out in a sample area of the Sarno Mountains, located above a debris flow initiation zone. The second was based on coupled hydrological and slope stability modeling performed on the physical models of slopes, which were reconstructed by empirical correlations between the slope angle, total thickness, and stratigraphic settings of pyroclastic fall deposits mantling slopes. The results obtained were: (a) The understanding of a soil pressure head regime of the volcaniclastic soil mantle, always ranging in unsaturated conditions and characterized by a strong seasonal variability depending on precipitation patterns and the life cycle of deciduous chestnut forest; and (b) the reconstruction through a deterministic approach of seasonal intensity-duration rainfall thresholds related to different morphological conditions
Deep R-band counts of z~3 Lyman break galaxy candidates with the LBT
Aims. We present a deep multiwavelength imaging survey (UGR) in 3 different
fields, Q0933, Q1623, and COSMOS, for a total area of ~1500arcmin^2. The data
were obtained with the Large Binocular Camera on the Large Binocular Telescope.
Methods. To select our Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidates, we adopted the well
established and widely used color-selection criterion (U-G vs. G-R). One of the
main advantages of our survey is that it has a wider dynamic color range for
U-dropout selection than in previous studies. This allows us to fully exploit
the depth of our R-band images, obtaining a robust sample with few interlopers.
In addition, for 2 of our fields we have spectroscopic redshift information
that is needed to better estimate the completeness of our sample and interloper
fraction. Results. Our limiting magnitudes reach 27.0(AB) in the R band
(5\sigma) and 28.6(AB) in the U band (1\sigma). This dataset was used to derive
LBG candidates at z~3. We obtained a catalog with a total of 12264 sources down
to the 50% completeness magnitude limit in the R band for each field. We find a
surface density of ~3 LBG candidates arcmin^2 down to R=25.5, where
completeness is >=95% for all 3 fields. This number is higher than the original
studies, but consistent with more recent samples.Comment: in press by A&A, full LBG candidates' catalog will be available in

A long-lasting quiescence phase of the eruptive variable V1118 Ori
V1118 Ori is an eruptive variable belonging to the EXor class of Pre-Main
Sequence stars whose episodic outbursts are attributed to disk accretion
events. Since 2006, V1118 Ori is in the longest quiescence stage ever observed
between two subsequent outbursts of its recent history. We present
near-infrared photometry of V1118 Ori carried out during the last eight years,
along with a complete spectroscopic coverage from 0.35 to 2.5 um. A longterm
sampling of V1118 Ori in quiescence has never been done, hence we can benefit
from the current circumstance to determine the lowest values (i.e. the zeroes)
of the parameters to be used as a reference for evaluating the physical changes
typical of more active phases. A quiescence mass accretion rate between 1--3
10 M_{\sun} yr can be derived and the difference with
previous determinations is discussed. From line emission and IR colors analysis
a visual extinction of 1-2 mag is consistently derived, confirming that V1118
Ori (at least in quiescence) is a low-extinction T Tauri star with a bolometric
luminosity of about 2.1 L_{\sun}. An anti-correlation exists between the
equivalent width of the emission lines and the underlying continuum. We
searched the literature for evaluating whether or not such a behaviour is a
common feature of the whole class. The anti-correlation is clearly recognizable
for all the available EXors in the optical range (H and H
lines), while it is not as much evident in the infrared (Pa and
Br lines). The observed anti-correlation supports the accretion-driven
mechanism as the most likely to account for continuum variations.Comment: 6 figures, 5 tables, accepted on Ap
LBT/MODS spectroscopy of globular clusters in the irregular galaxy NGC 4449
We present intermediate-resolution (R1000) spectra in the
3500-10,000 A range of 14 globular clusters in the magellanic irregular
galaxy NGC 4449 acquired with the Multi Object Double Spectrograph on the Large
Binocular Telescope. We derived Lick indices in the optical and the
CaII-triplet index in the near-infrared in order to infer the clusters' stellar
population properties. The inferred cluster ages are typically older than
9 Gyr, although ages are derived with large uncertainties. The clusters
exhibit intermediate metallicities, in the range
[Fe/H], and typically sub-solar []
ratios, with a peak at . These properties suggest that i) during the
first few Gyrs NGC 4449 formed stars slowly and inefficiently, with galactic
winds having possibly contributed to the expulsion of the -elements,
and ii) globular clusters in NGC 4449 formed relatively "late", from a medium
already enriched in the products of type Ia supernovae. The majority of
clusters appear also under-abundant in CN compared to Milky Way halo globular
clusters, perhaps because of the lack of a conspicuous N-enriched,
second-generation of stars like that observed in Galactic globular clusters.
Using the cluster velocities, we infer the dynamical mass of NGC 4449 inside
2.88 kpc to be M(2.88 kpc)=. We
also report the serendipitous discovery of a planetary nebula within one of the

Characterizing faint galaxies in the reionization epoch: LBT confirms two L<0.2L* sources at z=6.4 behind the CLASH/Frontier Fields cluster MACS0717.5+3745
We report the LBT/MODS1 spectroscopic confirmation of two images of faint
Lyman alpha emitters at behind the Frontier Fields galaxy cluster
MACSJ0717.5+3745. A wide range of lens models suggests that the two images are
highly magnified, with a strong lower limit of mu>5. These are the faintest z>6
candidates spectroscopically confirmed to date. These may be also multiple
images of the same z=6.4 source as supported by their similar intrinsic
properties, but the lens models are inconclusive regarding this interpretation.
To be cautious, we derive the physical properties of each image individually.
Thanks to the high magnification, the observed near-infrared (restframe
ultraviolet) part of the spectral energy distributions and Ly-alpha lines are
well detected with S/N(m_1500)>~10 and S/N(Ly-alpha)~10-15. Adopting mu>5, the
absolute magnitudes, M_1500, and Ly-alpha fluxes, are fainter than -18.7 and
2.8x10^(-18)erg/s/cm2, respectively. We find a very steep ultraviolet spectral
slope beta=-3.0+/-0.5 (F_lambda=lambda^(beta)), implying that these are very
young, dust-free and low metallicity objects, made of standard stellar
populations or even extremely metal poor stars (age<~30Myr, E(B-V)=0 and
metallicity 0.0-0.2 Z/Zsolar). The objects are compact (< 1 kpc^(2)), and with
a stellar mass M* < 10^(8) M_solar. The very steep beta, the presence of the
Ly-alpha line and the intrinsic FWHM (<300 km/s) of these newborn objects do
not exclude a possible leakage of ionizing radiation. We discuss the
possibility that such faint galaxies may resemble those responsible for cosmic

Pre-main sequence spectroscopic binaries suitable for VLTI observations
A severe problem of the research in star-formation is that the masses of young stars are almost always estimated only from evolutionary tracks. Since the tracks published by different groups differ, it is often only possible to give a rough estimate of the masses of young stars. It is thus crucial to test and calibrate the tracks. Up to now, only a few tests of the tracks could be carried out. However, with the VLTI it is now possible to set constrains on the tracks by determining the masses of many young binary stars precisely. In order to use the VLTI efficiently, a first step is to find suitable targets, which is the purpose of this work. Given the distance of nearby star-forming regions, suitable VLTI targets are binaries with orbital periods between at least 50 days, and few years. Although a number of surveys for detecting spectroscopic binaries have been carried out, most of the binaries found so far have periods which are too short. We thus surveyed the Chamaeleon, Corona Australis, Lupus, Sco-Cen, rho Ophiuci star-forming regions in order to search for spectroscopic binaries with periods longer than 50 days, which are suitable for the VLTI observations. As a result of the 8 years campaign we discovered 8 binaries with orbital periods longer than 50 days. Amongst the newly discovered long period binaries is CS Cha, which is one of the few classical T Tauri stars with a circumbinary disk. The survey is limited to objects with masses higher than 0.1 to 0.2 Modot for periods between 1 and 8 years. We find that the frequency of binaries with orbital periods < 3000 days is of 20+/-5 percent. The frequency of long and short period pre-main sequence spectroscopic binaries is about the same as for stars in the solar neighbourhood. In total 14 young binaries are now known which are suitable for mass determination with the VLTI
Groundwater vulnerability of principal aquifers of the Campania region (southern Italy)
The assessment of groundwater vulnerability is an important aspect of territorial planning aimed at the management and protection of groundwater quality. This topic is particularly relevant for the Campania region (southern Italy) due to the abundance of groundwater resources and the strong dependence on them of current economic, social and environmental settings. The region is characterized by complex geological, structural and hydrogeological frameworks which make challenging and innovative the assessment of groundwater vulnerability with SINTACS, a parametric method officially recognized by the Italian environmental agencies. In order to apply results obtained to current regional regulations, groundwater vulnerability was estimated for the 80 principal aquifers, hosting respective groundwater bodies, as recognized by the application of the Directive 2000/60/EC. Among principal results, the alluvial and limestone (karst) aquifers, which are the most productive of the region, show the highest groundwater vulnerability, even with spatially variable conditions depending on local hydrogeological features
