Baroclinic instability of a symmetric, rotating, stratified flow: a study of the nonlinear stabilisation mechanisms in the presence of viscosity
This paper presents the analysis of symmetric circulations of a rotating baroclinic flow, forced by a steady thermal wind and dissipated by Laplacian friction. The analysis is performed with numerical time-integration. Symmetric flows, vertically bound by horizontal walls and subject to either periodic or vertical wall lateral boundary conditions, are investigated in the region of parameter-space where unstable small amplitude modes evolve into stable stationary nonlinear solutions. The distribution of solutions in parameter-space is analysed up to the threshold of chaotic behaviour and the physical nature of the nonlinear interaction operating on the finite amplitude unstable modes is investigated. In particular, analysis of time-dependent energy-conversions allows understanding of the physical mechanisms operating from the initial phase of linear instability to the finite amplitude stable state. Vertical shear of the basic flow is shown to play a direct role in injecting energy into symmetric flow since the stage of linear growth. Dissipation proves essential not only in limiting the energy of linearly unstable modes, but also in selecting their dominant space-scales in the finite amplitude stage
VLA Polarimetry of Two Extended Radio Galaxies
Multi-wavelength VLA observations of two extended radio galaxies, 0235-197
and 1203+043 are presented. There is some evidence from earlier studies that
these two sources exhibit low frequency (<1 GHz) variability. This work shows
that both sources have linear polarizations, if any, below the detection limits
at 320 MHz, so we cannot explain the variability as being due to instrumental
polarization effects as has been suggested for 3C159. Refractive scintillation
may be the cause of the variability in 0235-197. This would require the
existence of a bright, compact component in one of the hot spots seen in these
observations. This is not implausible but the resolution of this observational
program is insufficent to address that question. The radio source 1203+043
lacks any bright compact component thereby ruling out a refractive
scintillation mechanism for its variability. Consequently, it is possible that
claims of variability in this source are spurious. However, the 320 MHz VLA
observations show that 1203+043 has an `X'-shaped radio structure. This is a
rare morphology for the brightness distribution of a radio galaxy; the

Effects of total replacement of corn silage with sorghum silage on milk yield, composition, and quality
BACKGROUND: In the last years, difficulties occurring in corn cultivation (i.e., groundwater shortages, mycotoxin contamination) have been forcing dairy farmers to consider alternative silages. Some experiments conducted on lactating cows have proven that the total replacement of corn silage with sorghum silage did not reduce milk yield. However, this kind of substitution involves supplementing sorghum-based diets with grains, to compensate for the lower starch content of sorghum silage compared to corn silage. Change of silage type and inclusion of starch sources in the diet would influence rumen fermentations, with possible effects on milk composition (i.e., fatty acid profile) and coagulation properties. A worsening of milk coagulation properties would have a negative economic impact in Italy, where most of the milk produced is processed into cheese. This study was designed to compare milk composition and quality, with emphasis on fatty acid profile and coagulation properties, in dairy cows fed two diets based on corn or sorghum silage. RESULTS: The sorghum diet reduced milk yield (Pā=ā0.043) but not 4% fat corrected milk (Pā=ā0.85). Feeding sorghum silage did not influence milk contents of protein (Pā=ā0.07) and lactose (Pā=ā0.65), and increased fat content (Pā=ā0.024). No differences emerged for milk concentrations of saturated (Pā=ā0.61) and monounsaturated fatty acids (Pā=ā0.50), whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids were lower (Pā<ā0.001) for the sorghum diet. Concentrations of n-6 (Pā<ā0.001) and n-3 fatty acids (Pā=ā0.017) were lower in milk of cows fed the sorghum diet. Milk coagulation properties did not differ between the two diets, except the āa30ā (the curd firmness, expressed in mm, 30 min after rennet addition), that was lower (Pā=ā0.042) for the sorghum diet. CONCLUSIONS: Feeding a forage sorghum silage, properly supplemented with corn meal, as total replacement of corn silage maintained milk composition and did not influence negatively milk coagulation properties, which have a great economic relevance for the Italian dairy industry. Thus, silages obtained from forage sorghums could have a potential as substitute of corn silages in dairy cow diets
Two-sided radio emission in ON231 (W Comae)
Recent radio images of the BL Lac object ON231 (W Com, 1219+285) show
remarkable new features in the source structure compared to those previously
published. The images were obtained from observations made with the European
VLBI Network plus MERLIN at 1.6 GHz and 5 GHz after the exceptional optical
outburst occurred in Spring 1998. The up-to-date B band historic light curve of
ON231 is also presented together with the R band luminosity evolution in the
period 1994--1999. We identify the source core in the radio images with the
brightest component having the flattest spectrum. A consequence of this
assumption is the existence of a two--sided emission in ON231 not detected in
previous VLBI images. A further new feature is a large bend in the jet at about
10 mas from the core. The emission extends for about 20 mas after the bend,
which might be due to strong interaction with the environment surrounding the
nucleus. We suggest some possible interpretations to relate the changes in the
source structure with the optical and radio flux density variation in the frame

The role of virtual reality in built environment education
This study builds upon previous research on the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) within the built environment curriculum and aims to investigate the role of VR and three-dimensional (3D) computer modelling on learning and teaching in a school of the built environment. In order to achieve this aim, a number of academic experiences were analysed to explore the applicability and viability of 3D computer modelling and VR into built environment subject areas. Although two-dimensional (2D) representations have been greatly accepted by built environment professions and education, 3D computer representations and VR applications, offering interactivity and immersiveness, are not yet widely accepted. The study attempts to understand the values and challenges of integrating visualisation technologies into built environment teaching and investigates tutorsā perceptions, opinions and concerns with respect to these technologies. The study reports on the integration process and considers how 3D computer modelling and VR technologies can combine with, and extend, the existing range of learning and teaching methods appropriate to different disciplines and programme areas
Scaling laws and universality in the choice of election candidates
Nowadays there is an increasing interest of physicists in finding
regularities related to social phenomena. This interest is clearly motivated by
applications that a statistical mechanical description of the human behavior
may have in our society. By using this framework, we address this work to cover
an open question related to elections: the choice of elections candidates
(candidature process). Our analysis reveals that, apart from the social
motivations, this system displays features of traditional out-of-equilibrium
physical phenomena such as scale-free statistics and universality. Basically,
we found a non-linear (power law) mean correspondence between the number of
candidates and the size of the electorate (number of voters), and also that
this choice has a multiplicative underlying process (lognormal behavior). The
universality of our findings is supported by data from 16 elections from 5
countries. In addition, we show that aspects of network scale-free can be
connected to this universal behavior.Comment: Accepted for publication in EP
Compact steep-spectrum sources from the S4 sample
We present the results of 5-GHz observations with the VLA A-array of a sample
of candidate Compact Steep Spectrum sources (CSSs) selected from the S4 survey.
We also estimate the symmetry parameters of high-luminosity CSSs selected from
different samples of radio sources, and compare these with the larger sources
of similar luminosity to understand their evolution and the consistency of the
CSSs with the unified scheme for radio galaxies and quasars. The majority of
CSSs are likely to be young sources advancing outwards through a dense
asymmetric environment. The radio properties of CSSs are found to be consistent
with the unified scheme, in which the axes of the quasars are observed close to
the line of sight, while radio galaxies are observed close to the plane of the
