    Institutions and the transition to adulthood: Implications for fertility tempo in low-fertility settings

    The number of countries experiencing very low fertility has been rising in recent years, garnering increasing academic, political and media attention. There is now widespread academic agreement that the postponement of fertility is a major contributing factor in the very low levels of fertility that have occurred, and yet most policy discussions have been devoted to increasing the numbers of children women have. We discuss factors in three institutions--the educational system, the labour market and the housing market--that may inadvertently have led to childbearing postponement. We highlight important components of the timing of childbearing, including its changing place within the transition to adulthood across countries and the significance of the demands of childbearing versus childrearing. Using illustrations from Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, we argue that the following all lead to younger childbearing: 1) an open education system whereby it is relatively easy to return to school after having dropped out for a while; 2) a shorter, smoother, easier school-to-work transition; 3) easier re-entry into the labour market after having taken time out for childrearing or any other reason; 4) greater capability of integrating childrearing into a career; 5) easier ability to obtain a mortgage with a moderately small down payment, moderately low interest rate and a long time period over which to repay the loan; and 6) easier ability to rent a dwelling unit at an affordable price. Conversely, reversing any or all of these factors would lead, other things being equal, to postponement of childbearing.

    The impact of the mode of thought in complex decisions: intuitive decisions are better

    A number of recent studies have reported that decision quality is enhanced under conditions of inattention or distraction (unconscious thought; Dijksterhuis, 2004; Dijksterhuis and Nordgren, 2006; Dijksterhuis et al., 2006). These reports have generated considerable controversy, for both experimental (problems of replication) and theoretical reasons (interpretation). Here we report the results of four experiments. The first experiment replicates the unconscious thought effect, under conditions that validate and control the subjective criterion of decision quality. The second and third experiments examine the impact of a mode of thought manipulation (without distraction) on decision quality in immediate decisions. Here we find that intuitive or affective manipulations improve decision quality compared to analytic/deliberation manipulations. The fourth experiment combines the two methods (distraction and mode of thought manipulations) and demonstrates enhanced decision quality, in a situation that attempts to preserve ecological validity. The results are interpreted within a framework that is based on two interacting subsystems of decision-making: an affective/intuition based system and an analytic/deliberation system

    Towards a case-based learning approach to support software architecture education

    Software architecture education remains challenging for instructors, students, and software industry professionals. Several initiatives have been proposed to mitigate the inherent challenges, including games, supporting tools, collaborative courses, and hands-on projects. Case-based learning has been introduced in software architecture, and its benefits are recognized. However, choosing the right cases that cover the stated learning objectives and developing learning activities to achieve high-order learning are also challenging. The main goal of this paper is to present a case-based learning approach that guides the development of learning objectives, the finding and selection of real-world software architecture cases, and the design of instructional activities. We applied our approach in software architecture related courses during the past few years. The results show that it can leverage the ways to adequately explore cases for educational purposes while also motivating instructors and students to the software architecture education

    Aesthetic satisfaction in lip and palate clefts: a comparative study between secondary and tertiary bone grafting

    Lip and palate cleft represent one of the most frequently occurring congenital deformity, which includes dental anomalies, such as variation in tooth number and position. In case of hypodontia implant-prosthetic rehabilitation offers significant advantages in terms of function, aesthetics and quality of life and bone graft is usually needed. Secondary bone grafting, generally performed in the mixed dentition phase (years 8-11) seems to be the most successful method to allow for rehabilitation. It's often necessary to perform a tertiary bone grafting in adult age in order to achieve better bone quantity and quality before implant placement. Aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the aesthetic perception that patients had of themselves comparing dental implants placed in tertiary grafted alveolar cleft sites with a previous secondary grafting to only secondary grafting. Between 2009 and 2012, fourteen alveolar cleft were treated with implant rehabilitation and eleven of them received tertiary bone grafting six months prior to implant placement. All patients were questioned to give a score from 1 to 10 their aesthetic satisfaction of their smile before and after implant rehabilitation and during pre-surgery provisional rehabilitation. At the end of their prosthesis rehabilitation patients who received tertiary bone grafting resulted more satisfied than those who had secondary bone grafting only (9.5 vs 8)

    Development of a Marslander with crushable shock absorber by virtual and experimental testing

    Since the beginning of space exploration, probes have been sent to other planets or moons with the associated challenge of landing on these bodies. For a soft landing several damping methods like landing legs or airbags have been used. A new and potentially less complex and lighter way to reduce the shock loads at touchdown is the use of a crushable shield underneath the lander platform. This crushable shield could be made for example out of an energy absorbing materials like an aluminum honeycomb core with a High Performance Polyethylene cover sheet. The design is particularly advantageous since no moving parts nor other mechanisms are required, thus making the shield very robust and fail safe. The only mission that is currently planned to use this technique is the ESA-mission “ExoMars” which is planned to start in 2016. The development of such a crushable shock absorber implies and requires assessment of materials, manufacturing processes, the setup of a numerical simulation and the experimental validation in a test lab. In an independent research project (Marslander1) a representative engineering mockup of the landing platform has been build and tested at the Landing & Mobility Test Facility (LAMA) to support the numerical simulation model with experimental data. The simulations are based on the explicit Finite Element Method, which discretizes the structure into a defined number of elements, such that each element is assigned a set of equations describing the material properties and applied loads. The goal is to generate a simplified but still accurate model to predict landing scenarios by running Monte Carlo simulations. Results of the above stated development and testing processes will be presented and discussed in this paper

    Schools, Schooling, and Children's Support of Their Aging Parents

    Intergenerational transfers play an important role in individuals' lives across the life course. In this paper I pull together theories on intergenerational transfers and social change to inform our understanding of how changes in the educational context influence children's support of their parents. By examining multiple aspects of a couple's educational context, including husbands' and wives' education and exposure to schools, this paper provides new information on the mechanisms through which changes in social context influence children's support of their parents. Using data from a rural Nepalese area I use multilevel logistic regression to estimate the relationship between schooling, exposure to schools, and the likelihood of couples giving to their parents. I find that both schooling and exposure to schools itself have separate, opposite effects on support of aging parents. Higher levels of schooling for husbands was associated with a higher likelihood of having given support to husbands' parents. On the other hand, increased exposure to schools for husbands and wives was associated with a lower likelihood of having given to wives' parents. Findings constitute evidence that multiple motivations for intergenerational support exist simultaneously and are related to social context through different mechanisms

    Health Services, Schools, Attitudes, and Contraceptive Use: Tests of a Theoretical Model Among Rural Nepalese.

    This dissertation uses new, highly detailed measures of dimensions of social context to advance our understanding of both attitudinal and programmatic mechanisms through which social context influences individual behavior. To illustrate, I focus on the relationship between dimensions of social context, specifically health services and schools, and contraceptive use in Nepal. Using data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study I employ multiple estimation techniques including multilevel-logistic and OLS regressions and discrete-time hazard modeling. To investigate the potential role of attitudinal mechanisms I explore how the health service and school contexts influence individuals’ attitudes about contraceptive methods, family size and composition, children, family, and non-family behaviors and how both context and these attitudes independently influence individuals’ contraceptive use. I find that women with positive attitudes about contraceptive methods and less family-oriented attitudes had higher rates of contraceptive use. Furthermore, women’s attitudes about children and family had strong effects independent from those of attitudes about contraception, indicating that these less closely connected attitudes play an integral part in women’s contraceptive use. When investigating the role of programmatic mechanisms I examine the separate effects of the provision of family planning, child, and maternal health services and, for schools, the effects of curriculum, teacher gender and training, students’ gender, and education costs. Because health service providers and schools are associated with a specific place, as new ones are built or existing ones change the services they offer, the distribution of these dimensions across physical space changes. Furthermore, because information about health services and schools is transmitted throughout communities through social channels, their potential realm of influence is also geographically disperse. Consequently, I use an expanded conceptualization of the influence of social context and estimate models with geographically weighted measures of health services and schools that incorporate all the providers and schools in the study area. My analyses using these geographically weighted measures indicate that these dimensions of health services and schools all influence contraceptive behavior. I also find evidence that women’s attitudes about children, the importance of childbearing, and roles within the family are mechanisms through which health services and schools influence contraceptive use.Ph.D.SociologyUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Double photo-ionization of He near a polarizable surface

    We calculate the differential cross-section of the direct double photo-ionization of He physisorbed on a polarizable surface. By including the influence of the surface potential in the correlated two-electron final state wavefunction, we show that the differential cross-section carries detailed information on the electronic correlations at the surface. In particular, photo-emission along opposite directions, which is prohibited in the free space, is allowed if the surface potential is long-ranged.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.
