Wind turbine wake characterization in complex terrain via integrated Doppler lidar data from the PerdigĂŁo experiment

    Get PDF
During the intensive period (May-June 2017) of the Perdigäo experiment, three sets of Doppler lidar were operated to scan the wake of the wind turbine (WT) on the southwest ridge. CU operated a Doppler scanning lidar in the valley bottom approximately 1 km northeast of the WT and conducted multiple arc scans and two RHI scans every 10-minutes centred on the WT. DTU used a dual Doppler lidar system scanning almost horizontally from the northeast ridge. Two of the three DLR lidars were in-plane with the WT for the main wind direction, one in the valley and one on the distant mountain ridge. The third DLR lidar was on the southwest ridge. All three systems (CU, DTU and DLR) were operated such that in data processing vertical and/or horizontal profiles of the wake can be derived at different distances from the WT. The paper describes the strategies used to scan the wake by the three groups and compares wake characteristics derived from the different systems

Multimodal Grounding for Embodied AI via Augmented Reality Headsets for Natural Language Driven Task Planning

Recent advances in generative modeling have spurred a resurgence in the field of Embodied Artificial Intelligence (EAI). EAI systems typically deploy large language models to physical systems capable of interacting with their environment. In our exploration of EAI for industrial domains, we successfully demonstrate the feasibility of co-located, human-robot teaming. Specifically, we construct an experiment where an Augmented Reality (AR) headset mediates information exchange between an EAI agent and human operator for a variety of inspection tasks. To our knowledge the use of an AR headset for multimodal grounding and the application of EAI to industrial tasks are novel contributions within Embodied AI research. In addition, we highlight potential pitfalls in EAI's construction by providing quantitative and qualitative analysis on prompt robustness.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figure

The Use of Theatre to Develop Social and Communication Behaviors for Students with Autism

    Get PDF
Social and communication behaviors are often a focus of instruction for individuals with autism. A theatre rehearsal and production process is challenging and joyful work that nurtures the development of social and language skills. This study evaluated and described social and language behaviors for students with autism both before and after a 10-week theatre experience. The results indicated that, when compared with a control group, the students with theatre experiences had significant and positive changes in the development of social and language skills. Most particularly, these students had significant improvement in social responsiveness, acknowledgement of the perspective of others, and participation and cooperation. The theatre experiences led to positive changes in social and communication behaviors for students with autism

Correlation of Pool Drowning Deaths with Number of Residential Swimming Pools by County in Florida, 2005-2007

Drowning in residential swimming pools is a significant public health problem in Florida. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the number of pools and pool drowning deaths by county in Florida. County property appraisers’ offices were surveyed to obtain a statewide census of appraised residential pools. The number of pool drowning deaths was obtained from death certificate records. Approximately 1.1 million residential pools were appraised in 2006, and 262 unintentional, confirmed pool drowning deaths occurred from 2005 through 2007. Statistical modeling showed that for every 10,000 residential pools that a county has, 2.4 additional pool drowning deaths can be expected to occur over three years. This relationship was therefore determined to be linearly correlated. Greater public health impact may be achieved by focusing drowning prevention efforts, especially among young children, in counties with more residential pools, and thus a greater risk of pool drowning
