The engagement of students using the virtual platform tools. A successful case in a required subject of 1st year in mathematics in engineering (UPC)
Fonaments matemà tics is a required 1st year subject in engineering career at the university EPSEVG (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) with approximately 270 students enrolled each semestre that traditionally it had a medium pass rate. Over the last 6 years we have introduced gradual changes in the teaching planning of it with the idea of achieving: 1) that students work throughout the course, 2) leveling knowledge and 3) reduce the number of students not presented to any exam. The changes have been implemented and corrected based on our feedback from students (engagement, grades, acceptance and survey assessments). The introduction of the calculator, laptops and tablets in everyday life and the use of the tools of the UPC virtual platform have been key. In this contribution, we present the strategies used and the good results obtained

Model of a moored power cable at OBSEA platform
New green energy sources deployed at sea in mobile
platforms use power cables in order to transport generated energy
at sea surface to the bottom. Theses power cables are exposed to
the dynamic behaviour of the platform movements due to waves,
currents and wind. OBSEA is a seafloor cabled observatory at 20
m depth in front of Vilanova, in Catalan coast. OBSEA captures
data in real time like current, waves and wind among others. In
this paper, a model of a moored power cable installed at OBSEA
is studied. The study is focused on the trajectory, tensions and
deformation or curvature of cables about 0.1 m diameter and
under real conditions collected from OBSEA sensors. Simulations
are done with OrcaFlex 9.3 software (license N1594). This
software allows to model underwater structures and cables.Postprint (published version

Preliminary study of moored power cables
New green energy sources deployed at sea in mobile
platforms use power cables in order to transport generated
energy at sea surface to the bottom. Theses power cables are
exposed to the dynamic behaviour of the platform movements due
to waves, currents and wind. Preliminary simulations of the static
and dynamic behaviour of a power cable moored at small depth
are done. The study is focused on a static study of cables about 0.1
m diameter in a catenary mooring under different seabed
conditions, bending stiffness and cable length. A preliminary
dynamic study is also done: the trajectory, tensions and
deformation or curvature of such a power cable under a specific
periodic wave conditions characteristics of catalan coast, in
Mediterraneum, are shown. The static study gives useful
information to be used when a dynamic mooring is build. The
simulations are done under OrcaFlex software (license N1594).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
A simplified model for bottom trawl fishing gears
Computational modeling is a valuable complementary tool to assess behavior of bottom trawl fishing gears. A simplified model of the gear that mainly affects to the net is proposed. The model is constrained to steady towing conditions, flat seabed and gear symmetry. Simulations proportionate a number of relevant outcomes like distribution of tensions at the warp, balance of forces at the otterboards or spread under different haul conditions such as depth or towing speed. In this paper we mainly focuss on the description and implementation of the model. Nevertheless, some preliminar comparison with experimental data is also shown
