The hypochilid spider Ectatosticta davidi (Simon) is redescribed on the basis of adults from Mt. Taibaishan in Shaanxi Province, China; the specimens from Qinghai Province previously identified as E. davidi by most modern authors belong to a new species described as E. deltshevi. Keywords: Araneae, Araneomorphae, Hypochilidae, Ectatosticta, Chin

First Asian spiders of the family Caponiidae (Araneae, Haplogynae).

12 p. : ill. ; 26 cm. Includes bibliographical references (p. 11-12).A new genus and species, Laoponia saetosa, are established to contain the first members of the family Caponiidae to be discovered in Asia. Only two Old World genera of caponiids have been described, both from Africa; in having only two eyes, the newly collected spiders from Laos resemble southern African Diploglena, rather than the type genus Caponia. However, members of Diploglena (which are poorly known, and are therefore discussed and illustrated) have an endite shape and eye pattern indicating that they may be most closely related to the Chilean genus Tisentnops. Laoponia may be most closely related instead to the endemic Californian genus Calponia; similar California/East Asia disjuncts are known in other old spider lineages

17 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 16-17)."The spider genus Platyoides O.P.-Cambridge, previously placed with the hemicloeine gnaphosoids, is assigned to the family Trochanteriidae Karsch on the basis of the elongated fourth trochanters and laterally divergent chelicerae. The 14 known species are diagnosed, described, and illustrated. Nine specific names are newly synonymized: P. abrahami O.P.-Cambridge, P. bottegi Pavesi, P. laterigradus Pocock, P. separatus O.P.-Cambridge, P. simoni O.P.-Cambridge, and P. bidentifer Strand, all with P. walteri (Karsch); P. beta Lawrence with P. alpha Lawrence; P. pusilliformis Tucker with P. pusillus Pocock; and P. lawrencei Lessert with P. leppanae Pocock. The males of P. pusillus Pocock and P. grandidieri Simon are described for the first time. Five new species are described: P. rossi and P. pirie from South Africa, P. velonus and P. mailaka from Madagascar, and P. venturus from the Canary Islands"--P. [1]

The hypochiloid spiders : a cladistic analysis, with notes on the Atypoidea (Arachnida, Araneae). American Museum novitates ; no. 2627

23 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 21-23)."A hypothesis of interrelationships of the primitive araneomorph spiders based on shared derived characters is presented. The genera Hypochilus and Ectatostica are regarded as sister groups and as constituting the sister group of all remaining araneomorphs. Three other genera (Hickmania, Gradungula, and Thaida) are sequentially considered plesiomorphic sister groups of the remaining araneomorphs. Sequenced and subordinated classifications derived from this cladogram are presented for purposes of comparison and evaluation. The family Ectatostictidae Lehtinen is newly synonymized with the Hypochilidae. Serrula morphology suggests that the superfamily Atypoidea is not monophyletic and that the Mecicobothriidae are more closely related to the Dipluridae than to the Antrodiaetidae or Atypidae"--P. 32 p. : ill., maps ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 31-32)."The subfamily Otiothopinae is erected for those palpimanids whose males have palpi consisting of only a bulb and embolus, without accessory terminal sclerites. Three genera (Otiothops MacLeay, Anisaedus Simon, and Fernandezina Birabén), restricted to the New World, are recognized. Compsopus Tullgren and Iheringia Keyserling are placed as junior synonyms of Anisaedus and Otiothops, respectively. The African genus Diaphorocellus Simon is removed from the synonymy of Iheringia and placed in the Chediminae. The possible phylogeny and zoogeographic history of the genera and species groups of Otiothopinae are discussed. Eleven new species are described: Otiothops loris from Peru; O. inflatus from Paraguay; O. baculus, facis, clarus, and contus from Brazil; O. intortus from Trinidad; Anisaedus pellucidas from Chile; and Fernandezina pelta, divisa, and acuta from Brazil. Four specific names are newly synonymized: Otiothops lapidicola Simon and O. carpenteri Chickerling, both with O. oblongus Simon; O. casobus Chickering with O. pentucus Chickering; and Anisaedus argentinus Mello-Leitão with A. rufus (Tullgren). The homonym Otiothops amazonicus Mello-Leitão is renamed O. pilleus. The male of O. amazonicus Simon and the females of O. calcaratus Mello-Leitão and O. whitticki Mello-Leitão are described for the first time"--P. [1]

A revision of the spider genus Eilica (Araneae, Gnaphosidae). American Museum novitates ; no. 2578

19 p. : ill., maps ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 18-19)."The 12 known species of Eilica are diagnosed and described. The genera Laronia Simon, Gnaphosoides Hogg, and Caridrassus Bryant are newly synonymized with Eilica. The genus is newly recorded from Jamaica, Honduras, Panama, Chile, and South Africa. The existence of a significant Australian fauna is established with the transfer of one species from Gnaphosoides and the description of three others. Five specific names are newly synonymized: variegata (Simon) and maculipes (Vellard), both with modesta Keyserling, and purpusi (Roewer), reynosana (Gertsch and Davis), and wheeleri (Bryant), all with bicolor Banks. Eilica trilineata (Mello-Leitão) is removed from the synonymy of variegata and considered a valid species. Five new species are described: chickeringi from Panama, fusca from South Africa, and contacta, rotunda, and serrata from Australia"--P. [1]

    Chilensis group

18 p. : ill., map ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 16 & 18).The chilensis group contains those Echemoides species in which the median apophysis of the male palp is bifid. A cladogram, map, key, diagnoses, descriptions, illustrations, and scanning electron micrographs are provided for the eight known species, which occur only in northern and central Chile (from Atacama south to malleco provinces) and which are largely or entirely allopatric. The female of E. rossi Platnick and Shadab is described for the first time, and two new species, E. chilensis and E. cekalovici, are described"--P. [1]

    Family Gallieniellidae (Araneae, Gnaphosoidea)

17 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 17)."On the basis of the sclerotized anterior spinnerets, obliquely depressed endites, and flattened oval posterior median eyes, the spider family Gallieniellidae Millot is transferred from the Clubionoidea to the Gnaphosoidea. The presence of a small but distinct apical segment on the anterior spinnerets suggests that gallieniellids are relatively plesiomorphic gnaphosoids. Two genera are recognized. Gallieniella includes the type species G. mygaloides Millot and the new species G. blanci and G. betroka, all from Madagascar, and the new species G. jocquei from the Comoro Islands. The new genus Legendrena includes four new species (L. angavokely, L. perinet, L. tamatave, and L. rolandi) from Madagascar"--P. [1]

A revision of the celer group of the spider genus Anyphaena (Araneae, Anyphaenidae) in Mexico and Central America. American Museum novitates ; no. 2575

    Get PDF
36 p. : ill. ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 35-36)."The 26 species of the celer group of Anyphaena known from Mexico and Central America are diagnosed and described. Modifications of the leg spination pattern and of genitalic sclerites are discussed. The use of claw tuft structure as a diagnostic character of the Anyphaenidae is investigated with scanning electron microscopy; differences from the Clubionidae in the number and orientation of the component setae are demonstrated. Fourteen new species are described: alamos, cielo, cortes, cumbre, encino, felipe, morelia, obregon, otinapa, salto, tancitaro, tehuacan, wanlessi, and xochimilco. Anyphaena excepta O.P.-Cambridge is newly synonymized with subgibba O.P.-Cambridge. The females of gibba O.P.-Cambridge, plana F.O.P.-Cambridge, and trifida F.O.P.-Cambridge are described for the first time"--P. [1]
