From Sheep Shed to Radio Observatory

    No full text

This is a presentation from the opening of the Rosse Solar-Terestrial Observatry in Birr Castle in June 2014. It shows how we started with a sheep shed (with sheep!) in 2010 to operating a working solar radio observatory in 2014. The presentation also includes images of the proposed Irish LOFAR radio telescope and associated visitor centre which we are fundraising for. You can find further details on the I-LOFAR project at www.lofar.ie.</p

The Causes and Consequences of Space Weather

Semar given at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) Geophysics Section on Friday, February 14, 2014.

Abstract: Solar storms are large-scale eruptions of hot gas and magnetic field from the lower atmosphere of the Sun. If launched towards Earth, solar storms can reach our planet in as little as ~18 hours, producing spectacular auroral displays at high terrestrial latitudes. In addition, large solar storms can cause interruptions in radio-based communications systems, GPS signals, and disrupt electrical power transmission networks. In this talk, I review our understanding of the causes and effects of space weather, and describe steps being taken nationally and internationally to monitor and forecast space weather.</p

This talk gives an overview of the opportunity for Ireland to build a LOFAR radio telescope in Birr Castle, Co. Offay and joint the EUR 150M international LOFAR telescope network (www.lofar.org). In particular, it highlights the impacts of investing EUR 1.5M in the Irish LOFAR station, which will have impacts on research, education, and university-industry relations in Ireland.

The talk was given at the "Big Science: An Irish Grand Challenge" workshop at University College Cork (http://www.bigscienceireland.com).</p
