Summary Postnatal brain neural stem and progenitor cells (NSPCs) cluster in anatomically inaccessible stem cell niches, such as the subependymal zone (SEZ). Here, we describe a method for the isolation of NSPCs from live animals, which we term “milking.” The intracerebroventricular injection of a release cocktail, containing neuraminidase, integrin-β1-blocking antibody, and fibroblast growth factor 2, induces the controlled flow of NSPCs in the cerebrospinal fluid, where they are collected via liquid biopsies. Isolated cells retain key in vivo self-renewal properties and their cell-type profile reflects the cell composition of their source area, while the function of the niche is sustained even 8 months post-milking. By changing the target area more caudally, we also isolate oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) from the corpus callosum. This novel approach for sampling NSPCs and OPCs paves the way for performing longitudinal studies in experimental animals, for more in vivo relevant cell culture assays, and for future clinical neuro-regenerative applications

Nuclear data for ion beam analysis applications

Nuclear data for Ion Beam Analysis have been compiled and disseminated by the Nuclear Data Section through the Ion Beam Analysis Nuclear Data Library (IBANDL) for over a decade. Recent efforts to enrich IBANDL with gamma-ray producing nuclear reaction cross sections, and to improve search and retrieval features are presented. The coordinated effort to produce reliable evaluated cross-section data for charged-particle reactions for a wider range of applications is also discussed

Mobile Assessment Procedures for Mental Health and Literacy Skills in Education

Mobile technology seems crucial for learning and teaching as it plays an important role in student’s social, emotional and academic life. This paper examines its role in secondary education focusing in mobile applications that support literacy and mental health in students. The results of a research that investigated the relationship between performance in language of secondary school pupils and the occurrence of depression symptoms are presented

Nuclear structure and decay data evaluation in Europe

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data (NSDD) activities in Europe include mass-chain and individual nuclei evaluations as well as horizontal evaluations and compilations, data dissemination and educational activities. As such they are essential for a large range of applications from energy, environmental, and medical to basic research in nuclear structure and reactions, all of which are intensively pursued in Europe. Although the NSDD evaluation groups in Europe form part of the international network of NSDD evaluators, which is coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency, they are faced with some very distinct challenges. We shortly present the NSDD Data Centre at IFIN-HH, Bucharest and discuss possible actions to improve the situation for the entire European NSDD evaluation effort

Technology has the potential to improve many aspects of our daily lives, including learning. It has been proven to increase student engagement and learning outcomes. With recent advances in the capabilities of smart mobile devices and their growing penetration rate among the student cohort, it is possible to take advantage of these devices to design appropriate exercises and tools that foster student’s knowledge and learning. In this paper we present some of the most well known mobile procedures that are used for secondary students in order to promote their learning and their skills. Additionally, its role in secondary students who face learning and other difficulties is investigated. Lastly, the results of a study that examined whether there is a relationship between the performance of secondary school Greek students in the language lesson, in mathematics lesson and index of verbal intelligence, index of intelligence practice and general index of intelligence are showed thoroughly
