    A simulation of film cooling in the leading edge region of a turbine blade (trench effect on film effectiveness from cylinder in crossflow)

    Film cooling is one of the cooling system techniques applied to the turbine blade. Gas turbine use film cooling technique to protect turbine blade from expose directly to a hot gas to avoid the blade from defect. The focus of this investigation is to investigate the effect of embedded three difference depth of trench at cooling holes geometry to the film cooling effectiveness. Comparisons are made under blowing ratio 1.0, 1.25, 1.5 and 2.0. Three configuration leading edge with depth Case A (0.0125D), Case B (0.0350D) and Case C (0.713D) were compared to leading edge without trench. Result shows that as blowing ratio increased from 1.0 to 1.25, the film cooling effectiveness is increase for leading edge without trench and also for all cases. However when the blowing ratio is increase to 1.5, film cooling effectiveness is decrease for all cases. Meanwhile for blowing ratio 2.0, the result shows the effect of depth is too small for all the cases. Overall the Case B with blowing ratio 1.25 has the best film cooling effectiveness with significant improvement compared to leading edge without trench and with trench Case A and Case C

    Learning algebra using augmented reality: A preliminary investigation on the application of photomath for lower secondary education

    This study aims to determine the effect of Photomath mobile application on the achievement and attitude of learning algebraic equations for lower secondary school students in Malaysia. Photomath is a free mobile application, for both ios and android platforms, which uses computer vision and image understanding technology to scan math equations using the mobile camera to subsequently provide worked solutions. The application recognises equations of both printed and handwritten and provides step-by-step calculations and graphical solutions. In this study, data were collected from 33 lower secondary students through pre and post-test and questionnaire. Data from pre-test and post-test were used to investigate the performance of students after the application of Photomath, whereas the questionnaire was used to identify the attitude of students towards the application of Photomath in learning algebraic equations, regarding belief and readiness aspects. Different mean scores for pre-test and post-test were tested, and hypothesis testing using a t-test was used. Data from the questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics. This study has found that the application of Photomath significantly enhances the learning of algebraic equations among Form Two students. However, the participants' belief and readiness towards Photomath are still at a moderate level

    Augmented Reality Applications in Teaching and Learning for topic of Current and Voltage Division for Technical and Vocational Education

    The combination of technology Augmented Reality (AR) with educational content aims to create new ideas that can improve the effectiveness and attractiveness of teaching and learning for students in real-life scenarios. The use of AR technology can make the process of teaching and learning more enjoyable, in which students' interest in learning can be stimulated. The AR technology has three characteristics. The first feature is that AR technology is a combination of virtual objects with the real world. The second feature is that AR operates in real time and interactively. The last feature is that it has 3 dimensions (3D) for virtual objects. In this study, the ADDIE model includes five phases, namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation, which are utilised to develop applications based on AR technology in education for the topic of Current and Voltage Division. To identify the effectiveness of the application of AR technology, a survey using questionnaire was conducted among pre-service teachers to know their perceptions of the development of AR applications namely as Voltrent AR. As this is a quantitative study where questionnaires were distributed to 73 students from the class of Bachelor of Technology with Education (Electric and Electronics) with Honours and Bachelor of Technology with Education (Living Skills) with Honours at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai, Johor. Most respondents gave very positive feedback on the use of AR in education, especially for the topic of Current and Voltage Division. AR is viewed as a medium of instruction that is innovative, interesting and effective. Voltrent AR application development is successfully developed based on the ADDIE model, and the application development of the constructivism theory was applied in this AR application. Thus, the AR application development has reached the desired objective of producing application-based Augmented Reality as a teaching aid.&nbsp

    The blockage ratio effect to the spray performances

    Nozzle sprays are used in wide range of application. The used of nozzle application is depend on the spray characteristics, by which to suit the particular application. This project studies the effect of the air blockage ratio to the spray characteristics. This research conducted into two part which are experimental and simulation section. The experimental was conducted by using particle image velocimetry (PIV) method, and ANSYS software was used as tools for simulation section. There are two nozzles were tested at 1 bar pressure of water and air. Nozzle A (with blockage ratio 0.316) and nozzle B (blockage ratio 1.000). Both of the sprays performances generated by the nozzles was examined at 9 cm vertical line from 8 cm of the nozzle orifice. The validation result provided in the detailed analysis shows that the trend of graph velocity versus distance gives the good agreement within simulation and experiment. From result, nozzle A generated a wider spray angle and higher water droplet velocity which are 31.41 degree and 37.317 m/s compared to nozzle B which has produced 27.13 degree of spray penetration angle and 16.49 m/s water droplet velocity. As a conclusion, blockage ratio has affected the spray system by increasing the velocity of air inside the spray system. This is happened at a condition of 1 bar air pressure

    Impacts of conceive-design-implement-operate knowledge and skills for innovative capstone project

    Nowadays, the competitions among countries to recruit engineering students as workers do not focus on talents, but also on the reserve of it. The advancement of education in engineering field plays a big part in enhancing comprehensive domestic strength because the scientific revolution will contribute to important modifications of the industrial landscape. Therefore, Conceive- Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) understanding and techniques are required for enhancing this field of education particularly for innovation of capstone project. Thus, this study was identified student knowledge and skills consist of teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills of the CDIO in capstone project involved two faculties which are Faculty of Biosciences & Medical Engineering (FBME) and Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Our respondents consist of 28 and 30 of third-year students from FBME and FKE respectively. Besides, this study also was identified the importance of the CDIO approach in the innovative capstone project. The method that used was a quantitative survey by using 5 Likert scale questionnaires. The average mean for all research questions indicated that the majority of respondents agreed that the CDIO knowledge and skills in the capstone project are important in engineering education. Hence, the engineering students must possess not only the skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication but also needs more knowledge that helps them to employability and adapt to real-world engineering problems

    Non-Destructive Testing (Ndt) Teaching Implementation in Vocational Colleges: Perspective from Industry Experts

    Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) have been long introduced in vocational colleges (VCs) in welding technology courses focusing on post-weld inspection. The NDT careers are on the surge, and these fields are continually advancing according to Malaysia Bureau of Labour Statistic. Several previous studies on the lack of skills possessed by TVET graduates have been conducted, all of which present evidence on the mismatch between skills outlined by industry and ineffective curriculum. However, none of these studies concentrate on VC graduates or welding technology courses in Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to identify the expected implementation and suggestion of teaching and learning of NDT based on industrial needs in VCs from the perspective of industry experts. The present study opted qualitative research design where a series of interview was administered to four industry experts. The interview protocol was verified and validated prior to the interview session. The present study has identified five elements that are relevant and necessity in implementing teaching and learning NDT based on industrial needs; Function of MPT and DPT tools and equipment, Implementation of MPT and DPT tools and equipment operation, Technique of the MPT and DPT tools & equipment operation, MPT and DPT tools & equipment storage skills and MPT and DPT tools & equipment maintenance skills. The suggestions are improvement in VCSC to meet the industry demand, engagement with NDT industry and soft skills and computer skills need to be added in VCSC
