    Validity of a food frequency questionnaire to assess nutritional intake among Sri Lankan adults

    Sri Lanka is undergoing nutritional transition and diet-related chronic diseases are emerging as an important health problem. Currently, no validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) exists to measure habitual dietary intake of Sri Lankan adults. The purpose of the study is to assess the validity of a semi-quantitative FFQ and 7-day weighed-intake dietary records (7DWR), designed to assess dietary intake among Sri Lankan adults. Dietary intake was measured using both a FFQ and 7DWR. The FFQ consisted of 8 food groups containing the main foods comprising the diet of Sri Lankan adults, a total of 85 items and 12 color photographs to identify serving size. One hundred healthy adults were randomly recruited from a community sample and administrated the FFQ followed by completion of the 7DWR. Paired sample t tests, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, kappa test and Bland–Altman analysis were conducted to determine correlation and the level of agreement for energy and micronutrients. Seventy-seven participants completed both the FFQ and 7DWR. Estimated mean energy intake (SD) from FFQ (1794 ± 398 kcal) and 7DWR (1698 ± 333 kcal, p < 0.001) were significantly different due to a significant overestimation of carbohydrate (11.5 g/day, p < 0.001) and to some extent fat (5.7 g/day, ns). Significant positive correlations (p < 0.05) were found between the FFQ and 7DWR for energy (r = 0.39), carbohydrate (r = 0.47), protein (r = 0.26), fat (r = 0.17) and dietary fiber (r = 0.32). Bland–Altman graphs indicated fairly good agreement between methods with no relationship between bias and average intake of each nutrient examined. Based on these findings, the FFQ appears to be an acceptable tool for assessing the nutrient intake of Sri Lankans and will assist proper categorization of individuals by dietary intake

    Patterning in Birthweight in India: Analysis of Maternal Recall and Health Card Data

    National data on birthweight from birth certificates or medical records are not available in India. The third Indian National Family Health Survey included data on birthweight of children obtained from health cards and maternal recall. This study aims to describe the population that these data represent and compares the birthweight obtained from health cards with maternal recall data in terms of its socioeconomic patterning and as a risk factor for childhood growth failure.The analytic sample consisted of children aged 0 to 59 months with birthweight data obtained from health cards (n = 3227) and maternal recall (n = 16,787). The difference between the card sample and the maternal recall sample in the distribution across household wealth, parental education, caste, religion, gender, and urban residence was compared using multilevel models. We also assessed the ability of birthweight to predict growth failure in infancy and childhood in the two groups. The survey contains birthweight data from a majority of household wealth categories (>5% in every category for recall), both genders, all age groups, all caste groups, all religion groups, and urban and rural dwellers. However, children from the lowest quintile of household wealth were under-represented (4.73% in card and 8.62% in recall samples). Comparison of data across health cards and maternal recall revealed similar social patterning of low birthweight and ability of birthweight to predict growth failure later in life. Children were less likely to be born with low birthweight if they had mothers with over 12 years of education compared to 1-5 years of education with relative risk (RR) of 0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.52, 1.2) in the card sample and 0.70 (95% CI: 0.59, 0.84) in the recall sample. A 100 gram difference in a child's birthweight was associated with a decreased likelihood of underweight in both the card (RR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.94, 0.96) and recall (RR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.96, 0.97) samples.Our results suggest that in the absence of other sources, the data on birthweight in the third Indian National Family Health Survey is valuable for epidemiologic research

    Galactic synchrotron distribution derived from 152 HII region absorption features in the full GLEAM survey

    We derive the synchrotron distribution in the Milky Way disc from H II region absorption observations over -40° &lt; l &lt; 40° at six frequencies of 76.2, 83.8, 91.5, 99.2, 106.9, and 114.6 MHz with the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison widefield array survey (GLEAM). We develop a new method of emissivity calculation by taking advantage of the Haslam et al. (1981) map and known spectral indices, which enable us to simultaneously derive the emissivity and the optical depth of H II regions at each frequency. We show our derived synchrotron emissivities based on 152 absorption features of H II regions using both the method previously adopted in the literature and our improved method. We derive the synchrotron emissivity from H II regions to the Galactic edge along the line of sight and, for the first time, derive the emissivity from H II regions to the Sun. These results provide direct information on the distribution of the Galactic magnetic field and cosmic ray electrons for future modelling

    Non-monotonic changes in clonogenic cell survival induced by disulphonated aluminum phthalocyanine photodynamic treatment in a human glioma cell line

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves excitation of sensitizer molecules by visible light in the presence of molecular oxygen, thereby generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) through electron/energy transfer processes. The ROS, thus produced can cause damage to both the structure and the function of the cellular constituents resulting in cell death. Our preliminary investigations of dose-response relationships in a human glioma cell line (BMG-1) showed that disulphonated aluminum phthalocyanine (AlPcS<sub>2</sub>) photodynamically induced loss of cell survival in a concentration dependent manner up to 1 ÎĽM, further increases in AlPcS<sub>2</sub>concentration (>1 ÎĽM) were, however, observed to decrease the photodynamic toxicity. Considering the fact that for most photosensitizers only monotonic dose-response (survival) relationships have been reported, this result was unexpected. The present studies were, therefore, undertaken to further investigate the concentration dependent photodynamic effects of AlPcS<sub>2</sub>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Concentration-dependent cellular uptake, sub-cellular localization, proliferation and photodynamic effects of AlPcS<sub>2 </sub>were investigated in BMG-1 cells by absorbance and fluorescence measurements, image analysis, cell counting and colony forming assays, flow cytometry and micronuclei formation respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The cellular uptake as a function of extra-cellular AlPcS<sub>2 </sub>concentrations was observed to be biphasic. AlPcS<sub>2 </sub>was distributed throughout the cytoplasm with intense fluorescence in the perinuclear regions at a concentration of 1 ÎĽM, while a weak diffuse fluorescence was observed at higher concentrations. A concentration-dependent decrease in cell proliferation with accumulation of cells in G<sub>2</sub>+M phase was observed after PDT. The response of clonogenic survival after AlPcS<sub>2</sub>-PDT was non-monotonic with respect to AlPcS<sub>2 </sub>concentration.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Based on the results we conclude that concentration-dependent changes in physico-chemical properties of sensitizer such as aggregation may influence intracellular transport and localization of photosensitizer. Consequent modifications in the photodynamic induction of lesions and their repair leading to different modes of cell death may contribute to the observed non-linear effects.</p

    Low frequency observations of linearly polarized structures in the interstellar medium near the south Galactic pole

The Version of Record is available online at https://doi.org/10.3847/0004-637X/830/1/38We present deep polarimetric observations at 154 MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), covering 625 deg^2 centered on RA=0 h, Dec=-27 deg. The sensitivity available in our deep observations allows an in-band, frequency-dependent analysis of polarized structure for the first time at long wavelengths. Our analysis suggests that the polarized structures are dominated by intrinsic emission but may also have a foreground Faraday screen component. At these wavelengths, the compactness of the MWA baseline distribution provides excellent snapshot sensitivity to large-scale structure. The observations are sensitive to diffuse polarized emission at ~54' resolution with a sensitivity of 5.9 mJy beam^-1 and compact polarized sources at ~2.4' resolution with a sensitivity of 2.3 mJy beam^-1 for a subset (400 deg^2) of this field. The sensitivity allows the effect of ionospheric Faraday rotation to be spatially and temporally measured directly from the diffuse polarized background. Our observations reveal large-scale structures (~1 deg - 8 deg in extent) in linear polarization clearly detectable in ~2 minute snapshots, which would remain undetectable by interferometers with minimum baseline lengths >110 m at 154 MHz. The brightness temperature of these structures is on average 4 K in polarized intensity, peaking at 11 K. Rotation measure synthesis reveals that the structures have Faraday depths ranging from -2 rad m^-2 to 10 rad m^-2 with a large fraction peaking at ~+1 rad m^-2. We estimate a distance of 51+/-20 pc to the polarized emission based on measurements of the in-field pulsar J2330-2005. We detect four extragalactic linearly polarized point sources within the field in our compact source survey. Based on the known polarized source population at 1.4 GHz and non-detections at 154 MHz, we estimate an upper limit on the depolarization ratio of 0.08 from 1.4 GHz to 154 MHz.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    The general fault in our fault lines

    Pervading global narratives suggest that political polarization is increasing, yet the accuracy of such group meta-perceptions has been drawn into question. A recent US study suggests that these beliefs are inaccurate and drive polarized beliefs about out-groups. However, it also found that informing people of inaccuracies reduces those negative beliefs. In this work, we explore whether these results generalize to other countries. To achieve this, we replicate two of the original experiments with 10,207 participants across 26 countries. We focus on local group divisions, which we refer to as fault lines. We find broad generalizability for both inaccurate meta-perceptions and reduced negative motive attribution through a simple disclosure intervention. We conclude that inaccurate and negative group meta-perceptions are exhibited in myriad contexts and that informing individuals of their misperceptions can yield positive benefits for intergroup relations. Such generalizability highlights a robust phenomenon with implications for political discourse worldwide
