Enhancing thermoelectric properties of graphene quantum rings

    Get PDF
We study the thermoelectric properties of rectangular graphene rings connected symmetrically or asymmetrically to the leads. A side-gate voltage applied across the ring allows for the precise control of the electric current flowing through the system. The transmission coefficient of the rings manifests Breit-Wigner line-shapes and/or Fano line-shapes, depending on the connection configuration, the width of nanoribbons forming the ring and the side-gate voltage. We find that the thermopower and the figure of merit are greatly enhanced when the chemical potential is tuned close to resonances. Such enhancement is even more pronounced in the vicinity of Fano like anti-resonances which can be induced by a side-gate voltage independently of the geometry. This opens a possibility to use the proposed device as a tunable thermoelectric generator.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Optical Spectroscopy of X-Mega targets in the Carina Nebula - VI. FO 15: a new O-Type double-lined eclipsing binary

We report the discovery of a new O-type double-lined spectroscopic binary with a short orbital period of 1.4 days. We find the primary component of this binary, FO 15, to have an approximate spectral type O5.5Vz, i.e. a Zero-Age-Main-Sequence star. The secondary appears to be of spectral type O9.5V. We have performed a numerical model fit to the public ASAS photometry, which shows that FO 15 is also an eclipsing binary. We find an orbital inclination of ~ 80 deg. From a simultaneous light-curve and radial velocity solution we find the masses and radii of the two components to be 30 +/- 1 and 16 +/- 1 solar masses and 7.5 +/- 0.5 and 5.3 +/- 0.5 solar radii. These radii, and hence also the luminosities, are smaller than those of normal O-type stars, but similar to recently born ZAMS O-type stars. The absolute magnitudes derived from our analysis locate FO 15 at the same distance as Eta Carinae. From Chandra and XMM X-ray images we also find that there are two close X-ray sources, one coincident with FO 15 and another one without optical counterpart. This latter seems to be a highly variable source, presumably due to a pre-main-sequence stellar neighbour of FO 15.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Recovery of baseline renal function after treatment for prolonged in-stent artery thrombosis, in a COVID-19 positive patient: a case report

    Get PDF
Objective: Acute renal in-stent thrombosis is common, especially after complex endovascular treatments, or in case of risk factors such as Covid-19 infection. Irreversible renal damage occurred when the renal artery was occluded for more than 3 hours. In this case, we present a case of renal function recovery after thromboaspiration of a renal stent thrombosis for more than 72 hours. Case presentation: A 88-year-old man who tested positive for COVID-19 presented to the emergency room with dyspnea and anuria. He referred a previous complex endovascular intervention with the triple chimney technique (ChEVAR). More than 72 hours passed between the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis of acute renal intra-stent thrombosis. He underwent urgent thromboaspiration with neurovascular devices returning to his baseline renal function. Conclusion: Despite the prolonged ischemia, renal revascularization with thromboaspiration restored renal function and rescued the remaining renal parenchym

A tunable single photon quantum router

    Get PDF
We propose an efficient single-photon router comprising two resonator waveguide channels coupled by several sequential cavities with embedded three-level atoms. We show that the system can operate as a perfect four-way single-photon switch. We also demonstrate that an incident single-photon propagating in one of the waveguides can be routed into one or the other output channels; such routing can be controlled by the external classical electromagnetic field driving the atoms. We argue that, under appropriate conditions, the efficiency of such routing can be close to 100\% within a broad operational bandwidth, suggesting various applications in photonics.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
