Urinary Exertion Of Calcium By Urinary Stone Disease Patients And Normal

No full text
To compare the urinary excretion of calcium by subjects in a known area of high incidence of urinary stone disease, and a known area of low incidence, 12 adult male patients with idiopathic calcigerous urinary stone disease in south-East Nigeria and 55 similar patients from Scotland, United Kingdom were analyzed thirty-six healthy subjects in Nigeria and 30 in Scotland were also analyses as controls. Twenty-four hour urinary excretion of calcium was higher in patients from Scotland (6.81 +0.48mmols/24 hours). It was also higher in control from Scotland (5.96+0.61 mmol/24 hours), than in controls from Nigeria (2.33+0.21mmols/24 hours), and the difference was statistically significant (P< 0.001), Calcium excretion was higher in patients than in controls in both centers. Occurrence of Post-orchiectomy Hot Flushes in Nigerians: A Preliminary Report

No full text
Background: Hot flushes have been reported in men after bilateral orchiectomy for carcinoma of the prostate, but such complaints are uncommon in the urology clinics in Nigeria. This study set out to determine the occurrence of hot flushes in Nigerian patients who had bilateral orchiectomy for advanced carcinoma of the prostate. Method: Twenty-four patients seen over a five-year period were prospectively evaluated. They all had bilateral orchiectomies for advanced carcinoma of the prostate. Result: Fourteen (58%) of patients studied had hot flushes of varying frequency and severity. All started within eight weeks of the operation. Empirical treatment with 1mg diethylstilboesterol daily was effective and abolished symptoms in all the patients within four weeks of commencement of therapy. Conclusion: Post-orchiectomy hot flushes of enough severity to necessitate treatment do occur in Nigerians and effort should be made to diagnose and treat them. ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION OF ELE RIVER IN NNEWI OF ANAMBRA STATE OF NIGERIA USING WATER QUALITY INDEX MODEL

No full text
The purpose of an index is to transform a complex water quality data into information that is easily understandable and useable by the general public. Water Quality Index (WQI) was therefore used for the assessment of the impact of industrial effluent on the environmental pollution of Ele River. The parameters used in this study to develop WQI are chemical water quality indicators - pH, Total Dissolved Solid, Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Total Alkalinity, and Electrical Conductivity. Water samples were collected from three sampling stations. Ele River based on the preliminary survey was divided into three sampling stations. The sampling stations were then designated as: station 1 (Point of entry of the effluent), station 2 (100 m away from the effluent discharge point) and station 3 (250 m away from the effluent discharge point). The QWI of the stations ranges from a minimum of 51.53 in the month of June in point 1 to the maximum of 92.92 in the month of January in point 3. It can be inferred that physico-chemical water quality of the River is generally of medium and good quality base on WQI assessment and WHO standard
