Protein-energy malnutrition and the home environment : a study among children in Coast Province, Kenya

Abr. abstr.: This is an account of a study concerning the occurrence of childhood malnutrition in Kilifi District, Kenya. The socioeconomic characteristics of women with malnourished children who attended Kilifi Family Life Training Centre in the year 1984/1985 were analysed. Next, the possible influence of intra-household factors on the occurrence of childhood malnutrition was examined. A comparison of two groups of ten mother/child pairs, focusing on feeding and weaning patterns, hygiene, parental care and home stimulation, revealed important variations as regards child/caretaker relationships. In households where no malnutrition had occurred, children were fed more regularly and were provided with more types of stimulation. The question remains whether a malnourished child generates a lower level of stimulation on the caretaker's part, or whether lack of stimulation by the caretaker leads to an increased risk of malnutrition. However, the present findings indicate not only that a relationship between childhood malnutrition and home stimulation exists, but that it persists beyond the acute episode and subsequent rehabilitation. Non-universal behavior for aperiodic interactions within a mean-field approximation

We study the spin-1/2 Ising model on a Bethe lattice in the mean-field limit, with the interaction constants following two deterministic aperiodic sequences: Fibonacci or period-doubling ones. New algorithms of sequence generation were implemented, which were fundamental in obtaining long sequences and, therefore, precise results. We calculate the exact critical temperature for both sequences, as well as the critical exponent $\beta$, $\gamma$ and $\delta$. For the Fibonacci sequence, the exponents are classical, while for the period-doubling one they depend on the ratio between the two exchange constants. The usual relations between critical exponents are satisfied, within error bars, for the period-doubling sequence. Therefore, we show that mean-field-like procedures may lead to nonclassical critical exponents.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

High temperature thermal conductivity of 2-leg spin-1/2 ladders

Based on numerical simulations, a study of the high temperature, finite frequency, thermal conductivity $\kappa(\omega)$ of spin-1/2 ladders is presented. The exact diagonalization and a novel Lanczos technique are employed.The conductivity spectra, analyzed as a function of rung coupling, point to a non-diverging $dc-$limit but to an unconventional low frequency behavior. The results are discussed with perspective recent experiments indicating a significant magnetic contribution to the energy transport in quasi-one dimensional compounds.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

The impact of nutrition education at three health centres in Central Province, Kenya

This report contains an account of a study of the effects of nutrition education as given at three health centres in different ecological zones in Central Province, Kenya. Two groups of mothers in similar social and economic situations were selected for interviewing: frequent and infrequent visitors. They were compared on the following indicators: nutritional knowledge, maternal food preferences, food consumption of the children during the previous day and nutritional status of the children. Conclusion: nutrition education has little or no impact on the whole range of nutritional attitudes of mothers, their behaviour and the nutritional status of children.ASC – Publicaties niet-programma gebonde

The nutritional impact of the Pre-School Health Programme at three clinics in Central Province, Kenya

Contains an account of a study of the effects of the Pre-School Health Programme at three clinics in different ecological zones in Central Province, Kenya. Two groups of mothers were selected for interviewing: recent entrants and longtime participants. The study concentrates on the following aspects: nutritional knowledge; maternal food preferences; food consumption of the children during the previous day; and nutritional status of the children.
