AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES AND SUBSTRUCTURES IN ARMENIA

    Get PDF
The Armenian land privatization program is unique among former Soviet Republics in regard to the speed and completeness of its implementation. Armenia is the smallest of the Republics, with a population of 3.7 million, and was left highly dependent on outside sources for energy and raw materials for industries, and grain for its people and livestock. Privatization, began in 1991, was largely completed by 1993. The greatly increased number of individual owners created a need for major restructuring of the industries supplying agriculture and marketing its outputs. Problems in the substructures from technical supplies to storage and marketing are described. Recommendations are for the adoption of policies in the substructural spheres of agriculture that will contribute to the future development of agriculture in Armenia. These policies include improved contractual relations, cooperatives, niche marketing, and restructuring of various service corporations.Agribusiness,

    Supersymmetry on Jacobstahl lattices

It is shown that the construction of Yang and Fendley (2004 {\it J. Phys. A: Math.Gen. {\bf 37}} 8937) to obtainsupersymmetric systems, leads not to the open XXZ chain with anisotropy Δ=1/2\Delta =-{1/2} but to systems having dimensions given by Jacobstahl sequences. For each system the ground state is unique. The continuum limit of the spectra of the Jacobstahl systems coincide, up to degeneracies, with that of the Uq(sl(2))U_q(sl(2)) invariant XXZ chain for q=exp(iπ/3)q=\exp(i\pi/3). The relation between the Jacobstahl systems and the open XXZ chain is explained.Comment: 6 pages, 0 figure

Making Ends Meet: Private Food Assistance and the Working Poor

    Get PDF
Concern is growing that large segments of low-income Americans are slipping through, or are not adequately served by, the public food assistance safety net. Many of these individuals are turning to the private network of food pantries and soup kitchens for their nourishment. In particular, a significant percentage of individuals seeking private food assistance are the working poor. In this paper, we look at the characteristics of a sample of employed Virginia households who depend on soup kitchens or food pantries to help them make ends meet. Our data indicate that these individuals have demographic characteristics that do not bode well for their being able to earn high enough wages to all allow them to meet basic family needs without some type of additional supports.
