Towards a topology of 'Doing Gender': an analysis of empirical research and its challenges

‘Doing gender’ is a much used term in research on gender, work and organizations. However, translating theoretical insight into empirical research is often a challenging endeavour. A lack of clarity with regard to the conceptualization and operationalization of key terms in turn often limits the theoretical and empirical purchase of a concept. The aim of this article is therefore to provide a systematization of empirical approaches to ‘doing gender’. This systematization leads to a topology of five themes that is derived from empirical research in the field. The five themes identified are structures, hierarchies, identity, flexibility and context specificity, and gradual relevance/subversion. Each theme explores a different facet of ‘doing gender’. This topology helps empirical researchers to be more specific about which aspects of ‘doing gender’ they are referring to. This in turn can help to unfold the theoretical potential of the concept of ‘doing gender’

Im Wettbewerb um "Familienfreundlichkeit": Konstruktionen familienfreundlicher Wirklichkeiten zwischen gleichstellerischen Idealen und pragmatischer Machbarkeit

"Mit Blick auf Konstruktionen von 'Familienfreundlichkeit' im Kontext verschiedener neuer Schweizer Wettbewerbe zur Auszeichnung 'familienfreundlicher' Unternehmen werden die im Konstruktionsprozess jeweils verwendeten Verständnisse untersucht. Leitend ist dabei die Frage nach Veränderungspotenzialen hinsichtlich geschlechtsspezifischer Arbeits-, Verantwortungs- und Raumteilung. Durch ein multiperspektivisches, qualitatives Vorgehen werden bei den untersuchten kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen (KMU) sechs unterschiedliche interpretative Repertoires herausgearbeitet und deren jeweilige Funktionen und Konsequenzen für den Argumentationszusammenhang diskutiert. Dabei wird die jeweils verfolgte Zielsetzung als zentral angesehen. Wird in einem Fall explizit ein gleichstellerisches Anliegen, verbunden mit einer Veränderung der geschlechtsspezifischen Arbeitsteilung und Rollenvorstellungen verfolgt, so scheinen 'familienfreundliche' Maßnahmen in anderen interpretativen Repertoires für diese Zielsetzung geradezu kontraproduktiv zu wirken." (Autorenreferat)"Analysing the construction of 'family friendliness' in the context of various Swiss competitions for family friendly companies this study asks the question about different understandings in the construction process. The guiding question lies on the potentials for change regarding the gendered division of labour, responsibility and space. By means of a multi-perspective qualitative research design the constructions in small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) are explored. Six different interpretative repertoires are analysed and their consequences, functions and effects are discussed. Besides the context specific use of each of the interpretative repertoires the objective of each repertoire was seen as central to the consequences. For example, if a family friendliness initiative tries to support a change process towards gender equality, hence focusing on a change in the gendering of labour and stereotypical roles, some of the repertoires used are even working against this aim." New fathers, old mothers? Parenthood between equality and difference

Im vorliegenden Artikel werden die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Revision des Sorgerechts und des Kindesunterhalts in der Schweiz diskurspsychologisch untersucht. Konkret lassen sich in den untersuchten Dokumenten vier interpretative Repertoires identifizieren: Egalität, Kindeswohl, Ungleichheit von Mutter und Vater und individuelle familiäre Lösungen. Zwischen diesen Repertoires lassen sich deutlich ideologische Dilemmata erkennen: Egalität der Eltern und Ungleichheit zwischen Vater und Mutter widersprechen sich, und die Nichteinmischung des Staates in die familiale Privatsphäre wird durch die hohe Gewichtung des Kindeswohls tangiert. Die Diskursanalyse zeigt, dass sich die ausführlich diskutierte Vorstellung von der Egalität der Eltern nicht durchsetzen kann gegen den verborgenen, nie thematisierten Subtext des Unterschieds zwischen Mutter und Vater. Gelöst wird das Dilemma, indem die diskutierten Ideale und Leitbilder als individuell zu realisierende erklärt werden. Mutter und Kind werden hier in essentialistischer Weise miteinander verknüpft und Veränderungen höchstens in marginaler Weise am Vaterbild zugelassen.This article presents a discourse analysis of recent legislative changes in the fields of child custody and child support in Switzerland. We identified four interpretative repertoires in these documents: Equality of women and men, child’s welfare, inequality of mothers and fathers and individual familial solutions. Between these repertoires, we identified several ideological dilemmas: Equality of women and men directly contradicts the inequality of mothers and fathers, while the principle of governmental non-intervention into the private sphere of the family is being questioned by the high importance attributed to the child’s welfare. This discourse analysis shows that the widely discussed ideal of the equality of women and men does not hold up against the hidden subtext of the inequality of mothers and fathers. The dilemma is solved by declaring the implementation of the ideal of equality as an individual problem. In this reading, mother and child are still connected in an essentialist way, while the image of the father undergoes marginal changes only

Entre la provocación y la conformidad: La actuación (agency) como posicionamiento discursivo

Anhand einer diskursanalytischen Auswertung acht problemzentrierter Interviews mit Akteurinnen und Akteuren des Kampfes um das Frauenstimmrecht in den Schweizer Kantonen Appenzell-Innerrhoden und Appenzell-Ausserrhoden wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie individuelle Handlungsmächtigkeit im Kontext dieses gesellschaftlichen Veränderungsprozesses diskursiv hergestellt werden konnte. Als zentral für die Subjektpositionierung und das Erlangen einer warranting voice erwiesen sich dabei die Spannungsfelder zwischen "Provokation und Anpassung" sowie einer Veränderung von "innen oder von außen". Die jeweiligen Pole wurden zwar als sich gegenseitig ausschließend diskutiert, die Analyse macht jedoch deutlich, dass handlungs- und damit veränderungsmächtige Subjektpositionierungen erst im Vorgang der Aushandlung entstehen konnten. Die empirische Analyse zeigt damit detailliert auf, dass die sozialkonstruktionistische Position eines konstruierten Subjekts keinesfalls dessen Handlungsmächtigkeit verunmöglicht, sondern Handlungsmächtigkeit erst durch den Prozess der Subjektpositionierung ermöglicht wird. Las políticas de identidad de la investigación cualitativa. Un discurso inter-texto analítico

Unser Beitrag versteht sich als Inter-Text zwischen ausgewählten FQS-Artikeln – welche in der einen oder anderen Art die Identitätspolitik qualitativer Forschung zum Ausdruck bringt – und der breit angelegten Qualitätsdiskussion sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Anhand einer Diskursanalyse wird untersucht, wie die Bedeutung "qualitativer Forschung" durch deren Verknüpfung mit dem positivistischen Verständnis von Forschung eingeschränkt wird. Das Ziel dabei ist, zwei besonders rigide binäre Hierarchien kritisch zu beleuchten und zu zeigen, wie diese konträr zu einem kreativen/ästhetischen Verständnis von (qualitativer) Forschung verlaufen. Die Untersuchung sieht sich zudem als Versuch, den Horizont qualitativer Forschung durch die Erweiterung von deren Begrifflichkeit zu öffnen. Dazu wird in einem ersten Schritt auf die binäre Unterscheidung von qualitativer und quantitativer Forschung eingegangen. Es wird dabei verdeutlicht, dass diese Trennung – nicht zuletzt aufgrund der Reifizierung quantitativer Qualitätskriterien – zu einer chronischen Nachrangigkeit des qualitativen Wissenschaftsverständnisses führt. In einem zweiten Schritt wird auf die binäre Unterscheidung zwischen qualitativer Forschung und "Nicht-Forschung" – wie beispielsweise Kunst, Journalismus oder Dichtung – eingegangen, wobei diskutiert wird, dass diese Unterscheidung in erster Linie im Dienste der wissenschaftlichen Legitimation qualitativer Forschung steht. Ausgehend von der Prämisse, dass beide binäre Unterscheidungen zu einem eingeschränkten Verständnis und oft auch zu einem untergeordneten Status qualitativer Forschung führen, werden ausgewählte postmoderne Ansätze herbeigezogen, um ein alternatives Verständnis von (qualitativer) Forschung und Forschungsqualität zu etablieren. Wir schließen unseren Beitrag mit einem Appell für eine "Politik der Differenz", welche sich unter anderem für die Erweiterung der Identität qualitativer Forschung – anhand der Vervielfältigung ihrer Genres, Stile und Tropoi – stark macht. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0604286We intend this paper to be read as an inter-text between selected FQS articles, which in one way or another engage in the identity politics of qualitative research, and the broader discussion of quality in the social sciences. Subjecting those texts to a discursive investigation, we highlight how the semantic scope of what is called "qualitative research" is decisively delimited by the positivist associations of "good research". Our overall aim is to take issue with two binaries that are commonly employed by qualitative researchers and thus collide with the evolution of creative/aesthetic science. Simultaneously, however, we seek to enliven qualitative research by providing an (ancient and thus marginal) understanding of research and of approaches that are still outside the prevailing canon. To this end, we start by investigating the binary between quantitative and qualitative research that is perpetually reified as our colleagues invoke the positivist quality criteria, subordinating the qualitative pole to an inferior position. Second, we provide examples of the ways that qualitative research is habitually separated from "non-research" such as the arts, journalism and fiction, ostensibly to justify calling it "scientific". Pondering how these binaries endow qualitative research with a limited identity and a supplementary status, we draw on some postmodern works so as to elaborate on alternative understandings of "science" and scientific quality. Finally, we argue for a "politics of difference" which we envision as a point of origin for extending qualitative research by multiplying its genres, styles and tropes. Sometiendo esos textos a una investigación discursiva, subrayamos la forma en que el alcance semántico de lo que es nombrado "investigación cualitativa" está decididamente delimitado por las asociaciones positivistas de la "buena investigación". Nuestro objetivo general es abordar el tema con dos binarios que se usan comúnmente por los investigadores cualitativos y luego contrastarlos con la evolución de la ciencia estética/creativa. Además, buscamos simultáneamente animar la investigación cualitativa al proporcionar una comprensión (vieja y por tanto marginal) de la investigación y de los enfoques que aún están fuera del cánon predominante. Para este fin, comenzamos por investigar el binario entre investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa que es permanentemente reificado en tanto nuestros colegas invocan los criterios positivistas de calidad, subordinando el polo cualitativo a una posición inferior. En segundo lugar, proporcionamos ejemplos de las formas en que la investigación cualitativa es habitualmente separada de la "no investigación" realizada en las artes, el periodismo y la literatura de ficción, para justificarla ostensiblemente llamándola "científica". Ponderando la forma en que estos binarios dotan a la investigación cualitativa con una identidad limitada y un estatuto complementario, ilustramos con algunos trabajos posmodernos para elaborar una comprensión alternativa de "ciencia" y calidad científica. Weltoffenheit unter Gleichgesinnten : Widersprüchlicher Ein- und Ausschluss als diskursive Alltagspraxis

Aus einer diskurspsychologischen Perspektive wurden die interpretativen Repertoires und ideologischen Dilemmata untersucht, die in 19 Gruppendiskussionen mit Bewohnern und Bewohnerinnen dreier Quartiere einer mittelgroßen Schweizer Stadt verschiedene Versionen von Ein- und Ausschluss erzeugen. Mit der Entwicklung des Begriffs der «Legitimierungspraktiken» werden die diskursiven Praktiken analysiert, die Ausschluss auf subtile Weise nicht nur erzeugen, sondern zugleich als «politisch korrekt» zu legitimieren vermögen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen auf, wie zentrale Diskursbausteine liberal-egalitärer Gesellschaften zur Legitimation von Ausschluss beitragen
