Winners and Losers from World Agricultural Trade Liberalisation

This paper aims at showing the role of agriculture in determining many of the controversies and problems of the current phase of globalisation. This first entails presenting key statistics indicating the main developments in world agricultural trade, illustrating how there has been a relative deterioration of the export performance of developing countries. The Doha Development Agenda of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) is then analysed, indicating the positions of the main actors involved as this illustrates the perceived vulnerabilities and opportunities arising from agricultural trade liberalisation. The final part of the article provides a survey of the main estimates of the impact of agricultural trade liberalisation, and tackles the issue of those countries, sectors and households that might be adversely affected by the process. Estimating the moments of a random vector with applications

A general result about the quality of approximation of the mean of a distribution by its empirical estimate is proven that does not involve the dimension of the feature space. Using the kernel trick this gives also bounds the quality of approximation of higher order moments. A number of applications are derived of interest in learning theory including a new novelty detection algorithm and rigorous bounds on the Robust Minimax Classification algorithm

Biased Embeddings from Wild Data: Measuring, Understanding and Removing

Many modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems make use of data embeddings, particularly in the domain of Natural Language Processing (NLP). These embeddings are learnt from data that has been gathered "from the wild" and have been found to contain unwanted biases. In this paper we make three contributions towards measuring, understanding and removing this problem. We present a rigorous way to measure some of these biases, based on the use of word lists created for social psychology applications; we observe how gender bias in occupations reflects actual gender bias in the same occupations in the real world; and finally we demonstrate how a simple projection can significantly reduce the effects of embedding bias. Reptes ètics de l'atenció a la gent gran

El notable augment de la longevitat en la nostra societat és una bona notícia: vivim més i possiblement millor. Però a la vegada planteja nous reptes, també ètics. És en aquesta òrbita que presentem aquestes reflexions que pretenen aportar una visió en termes de coresponsabilitat. El marc conceptual de partença és el que anomenem “La quadratura circumscrita de l’ètica aplicada” (Nello 2001): la necessària articulació de les responsabilitats que pertoquen a totes les parts implicades en un determinat fenomen social, en el nostre cas l’atenció a la gent gran, sense que aquestes restin delegades exclusivament als professionals. Així, caldrà incorporar també les responsabilitats dels familiars de la gent gran i de les persones cuidadores que sovint els ajuden, sense excloure, en la mesura del possible, la responsabilitat de la mateixa persona gran. Afegir les responsabilitats de les institucions sanitàries o socials que embolcallen l’atenció a la gent gran. Considerar les responsabilitats que recauen en diversos estaments polítics, legislatius o executius. Sense menystenir la responsabilitat del gruix de la societat que, com a organisme viu i articulat del conjunt de la ciutadania, marca el llistó ètic de l’expectativa davant d’un fenomen com és el de la gent gran i del seu abordatge responsable

Social Machinery and Intelligence

Social machines are systems formed by technical and human elements interacting in a structured manner. The use of digital platforms as mediators allows large numbers of human participants to join such mechanisms, creating systems where interconnected digital and human components operate as a single machine capable of highly sophisticated behaviour. Under certain conditions, such systems can be described as autonomous and goal-driven agents. Many examples of modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be regarded as instances of this class of mechanisms. We argue that this type of autonomous social machines has provided a new paradigm for the design of intelligent systems marking a new phase in the field of AI. The consequences of this observation range from methodological, philosophical to ethical. On the one side, it emphasises the role of Human-Computer Interaction in the design of intelligent systems, while on the other side it draws attention to both the risks for a human being and those for a society relying on mechanisms that are not necessarily controllable. The difficulty by companies in regulating the spread of misinformation, as well as those by authorities to protect task-workers managed by a software infrastructure, could be just some of the effects of this technological paradigm

La sexualitat humana, entre la intimitat i la vulnerabilitat

L'article pretén mostrar la inherent complexitat de la sexualitat humana, de manera que queden denunciades les posicions anacròniques que encara avui llegeixen negativament i repressiva aquesta dimensió fonamental de l'existència humana, alhora que són desemmascarades les posicions de la pretesa alliberació sexual que redueix la sexualitat a una qüestió estrictament fisiològica i a un objecte de mercat. Perquè la sexualitat està sotmesa a una doble tensió: ètica, que té a veure amb l'orientació d'obertura a l'altre o de replegament sobre si mateix que li doni l'home, i antropològica, que concerneix la simultaneïtat de la necessitat d'intimitat i de por a la pròpia vulnerabilitat que es posen en joc en la vivència de la sexualitat. Una doble tensió que és també constitutiva del viure humà, però que troba en la sexualitat l'expressió i manifestació més aguda. És per això que s'afirma l'horitzó de l'amor com a únic àmbit de sentit de la sexualitat humana, i que es proposa una educació de la sexualitat en concomitància amb l'educació de la personalitat
