    Linguistic Ecosystems for Foreign-Language Learning in Canada and Japan: An International Comparison of Where Language-Learning Beliefs Come From

    We report on international research that compares linguistic ecosystems, that is, socially constructed public attitudes and ideologies concerned with foreign-language (FL) learning, in Canada and Japan. Analyzing responses to three interview questions from 125 interviews with five categories of respondent in each country, we suggest that there are a number of key differences between the linguistic ecosystems of the two countries, most notably that whereas Canada appears to promote the learning of foreign culture with little support for FL learning, Japan appears to promote FL learning without the learning of foreign culture.Notre article porte sur la recherche internationale qui compare les Ă©cosystĂšmes linguistiques, c’est Ă  dire les attitudes et idĂ©ologies publiques dĂ©finies par la sociĂ©tĂ© et portant sur l’apprentissage d’une langue Ă©trangĂšre, du Canada Ă  ceux du Japon.     Pressure-induced quantum critical point in a heavily hydrogen-doped iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO

    An iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO1−x_{1-x}Hx_x (0 ≀x≀\leq x \leq 0.6) undergoes two antiferromagnetic (AF) phases upon H doping. We investigated the second AF phase (xx=0.6) using NMR techniques under pressure. At pressures up to 2 GPa, the ground state is a spin-density-wave state with a large gap; however, the gap closes at 4.0 GPa, suggesting a pressure-induced quantum critical point. Interestingly, the gapped excitation coexists with gapless magnetic fluctuations at pressures between 2 and 4 GPa. This coexistence is attributable to the lift up of the dxyd_{xy} orbital to the Fermi level, a Lifshitz transition under pressure

    Academic Dignity: Countering the Emotional Experience of Academia

    A significant emerging body of research has articulated and critiqued the conditions and impacts of neoliberalism on academic institutions, particularly how the rise of the 'marketized' university has shifted the way in which academics are expected to engage in research and teaching. We highlight some of the key concepts evident in the research as they pertain to the emotional responses of academics to the ideological shift that has taken place within the academy. We focus on their perspectives in order to validate the emotional and lived experiences of academics and repudiate the neoliberal conceptualization of the academic as homo economicus. Referencing our ongoing research in Canadian universities as well as extant literature, we overview work on workplace dignity, a countervailing notion that mobilizes positive emotional concepts. Using this as a springboard, we finally begin to articulate an academic dignity-centered approach. By ‘academics’, we mean all those engaged in academic work within the academy, from tenured faculty to research specialists and contracted instructors. &nbsp

    Doppler-free dual-comb spectroscopy of Rb using optical-optical double resonance technique

    We present a Doppler-free high-resolution dual-comb spectroscopy technique in which a dual-comb system is employed to perform optical-optical double-resonance (OODR) spectroscopy. In our experimental study, Doppler-free high-resolution and high-frequency-accuracy broadband measurements were realized using the proposed OODR dual-comb spectroscopic technique, which does not require high-power-per-mode frequency combs. We observed fully resolved hyperfine spectra of 5P3/2 - 4D5/2, 4D3/2 transitions of Rb at 1530 nm and precisely determined the absolute frequencies of the transitions, with an uncertainty of less than 1 MHz. The variations of the OODR spectral line shapes due to power broadening and alignment and the effects of polarization on the dual-comb OODR spectra were also analyzed. This study provides a widely applicable technique for Doppler-free dual-comb spectroscopy of various gaseous species

    Creep motion in a granular pile exhibiting steady surface flow

    We investigate experimentally granular piles exhibiting steady surface flow. Below the surface flow, it has been believed exisitence of a `frozen' bulk region, but our results show absence of such a frozen bulk. We report here that even the particles in deep layers in the bulk exhibit very slow flow and that such motion can be detected at an arbitrary depth. The mean velocity of the creep motion decays exponentially with depth, and the characteristic decay length is approximately equal to the particle-size and independent of the flow rate. It is expected that the creep motion we have seeen is observable in all sheared granular systems.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
