Survey of chemical manure on morphological traits in Iranian Aloe vera
This experiment was conducted at the Institute of National Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Iran to evaluate the effect of different amount of fertilizers on the leaf and plant characteristics, as well as the yield characteristics of Aloe vera. There were 6 different treatments viz., T1 = 100% soil (control), T2 = 100 PK (50% P + 50% K), T3 = 50% K + 50% soil, T4 = 50% N + 50% soil, T5 = 150% NPK (50% N + 50% P + 50% K), T6 = 50% P + 50% soil. It was observed that the plant produced the highest mature leaf length and number of tillers plant-1 and maximum leaf weight as well as maximum weight of largest leaves with the application of 50% P + 50% K (T2). Different plant characters such as mature leaf breadth and breadth of the largest leaf was also found to be high with T5 treatment when compared with the control (100% soil). The number of leaves was also significantly affected by different fertilizer treatments where the maximum effect was noticed at early stages with T4 (50% N). It was revealed that T3 had a little effect on the number of leaves of A. vera over chemical fertilizer.Key words: Aloe vera, fertilizer, morphological traits, leaf growth
Effects of storage duration and storage temperature on viability of stored ova of kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) in ovarian fluid
Effects of post-stripping oocyte ageing and temperature on egg viability rates were studied in kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum). Eggs were retained outside the ovarian cavity (in vitro storage) with ovarian fluid at various temperatures of 4, 10, 12 and 26°C. Stored ova of six female kutum were fertilized separately after 0 (control eggs fertilized prior to storage), 2, 4, 6, and 8 h post-stripping (HPS) using fresh and pooled sperm obtained from five males. Eyeing, hatching and eyed egg mortality rates were recorded as an index of egg viability. The results indicated that the maximum eyeing (87%) and hatching (75%) rates of eggs took place at 0 HPS followed by 8 HPS (> 80 and > 70%, respectively) at 4°C. As storage temperature increased, egg viability decreased to 80, 70 and 50% viable at 8 HPS at 4, 10 and 12°C, respectively. The eggs stored at 26°C lost their viability almost completely after 4 HPS. Eyed-egg mortality increased from 13% at 0 HPS to 48.2% and at 4 HPS, at 26°C. This study demonstrated that the in vitro storage method is an applicable effective fertilization technique that can be used for restocking programs of kutum within 8 h at temperatures ranging from 4 to 12°C.Key words: Rutilus frisii kutum, egg storage, temperature, ovarian fluid
Genetic control of protein, oil and fatty acids content under partial drought stress and late sowing conditions in sunflower (Helianthus annuus)
The purpose of the present study was to map quantitative trait locus (QTLs) associated with percentage of seed protein, oil and fatty acids content under different conditions in a population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of sunflower. Three independent field experiments were conducted with well-, partial-irrigated and late-sowing conditions in randomized complete block design with three replications. High significant variation among genotypes is observed for the studied traits in all conditions. Several specific and non-specific QTLs for the aforementioned traits were detected. Under late-sowing condition, a specific QTL of palmitic acid content on linkage group 6 (PAC-LS.6) is located between ORS1233 and SSL66_1 markers. Common chromosomic regions are observed for percentage of seed oil and stearic acid content on linkage group 10 (PSO-PI.10 and SAC-WI.10) and 15 (PSO-PI.15 and SAC-LS.15). Overlapping occurs for QTLs of oleic and linoleic acids content on linkage groups 10, 11 and 16. Seven QTLs associated with palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acids content are identified on linkage group 14. These common QTLs are linked to HPPD homologue, HuCL04260C001. Coincidence of the position for some detected QTLs and candidate genes involved in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants would be useful for the function of the respective genes in fatty acid stability.Key words: Sunflower, quantitative trait locus, simple sequence repeats, oil content, protein content, fatty acids
Manipulation of photoperiod in growth factors of beluga sturgeon Huso huso
The beluga sturgeon is considered as the most important species for caviar production. This study aimed to evaluate effects of photoperiod manipulation on growth factors of beluga sturgeon. The six photoperiod regimes (light: dark cycle) including natural photoperiod (control), 24L : 0D, 16L : 8D, 12L : 12D, 8L : 16D and 0L : 24D with the three replicates. The treatment 5 (8L: 16D) gained the greatest final weight (2194.4 g) after 73 rearing days and besides, the treatments 4, 3 and 1 (12L : 12D, 16L : 8D, and Control) can be considered as the good photoperiod regimes for beluga sturgeon. The continuous light (24L : 0D) and continuous dark (0L : 24D) significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the final weight of fish to 1804.2 g and 1976.1 g, respectively. Regulated photoperiod significantly improve growth rate and food conversion ratio of beluga sturgeon
Parental willingness to pay for child safety seats in Mashad, Iran
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Iran has one of the highest rates of road traffic crash death rates throughout the world and road traffic injuries are the leading cause of years of life lost in the country. Using child car safety seats is not mandatory by law in Iran. The purpose of this research was to determine the parental willingness to pay (WTP) for child restraints in Mashad, the second most populated city in Iran with one of the highest rates of road traffic-related deaths.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We surveyed 590 car-owner parents of kindergarten children who were willing to participate in the study in the year 2009. We asked them about the maximum amount of money they were willing to pay for car safety seats using contingent valuation method.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The mean age of children was 33.5 months. The median parental WTP for CSS was about $15. Considering the real price of CSSs in Iran, only 12 percent of responders could be categorized as being willing to pay for it. Family income level was the main predictor of being willing to pay.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The median parental WTP was much lower than the actual price of the safety seats, and those who were of lower socio-economic class were less willing to pay. Interventions to increase low-income families' access to child safety seats such as providing free of charge or subsidized seats, renting or health insurance coverage should be considered.</p
The burden of disease and injury in Iran 2003
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study was to estimate the burden of disease and injury in Iran for the year 2003, using Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) at the national level and for six selected provinces.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Methods developed by the World Health Organization for National Burden of Disease (NBD) studies were applied to estimate disease and injury incidence for the calculation of Years of Life Lost due to premature mortality (YLL), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and DALYs. The following adjustments of the NBD methodology were made in this study: a revised list with 213 disease and injury causes, development of new and more specific disease modeling templates for cancers and injuries, and adjustment for dependent comorbidity. We compared the results with World Health Organization (WHO) estimates for Eastern Mediterranean Region, sub-region B in 2002.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We estimated that in the year 2003, there were 21,572 DALYs due to all diseases and injuries per 100,000 Iranian people of all ages and both sexes. From this total number of DALYs, 62% were due to disability premature deaths (YLD) and 38% were due to premature deaths (YLL); 58% were due to noncommunicable diseases, 28% – to injuries, and 14% – to communicable, maternal, perinatal, and nutritional conditions. Fifty-three percent of the total number of 14.349 million DALYs in Iran were in males, with 36.5% of the total due to intentional and unintentional injuries, 15% due to mental and behavioral disorders, and 10% due to circulatory system diseases; and 47% of DALYs were in females, with 18% of the total due to mental and behavioral disorders, 18% due to intentional and unintentional injuries, and 12% due to circulatory system diseases. The disease and injury causes leading to the highest number of DALYs in males were road traffic accidents (1.071 million), natural disasters (548 thousand), opioid use (510 thousand), and ischemic heart disease (434 thousand). The leading causes of DALYs in females were ischemic heart disease (438 thousand), major depressive disorder (420 thousand), natural disasters (419 thousand), and road traffic accidents (235 thousand). The burden of disease at the province level showed marked variability. DALY estimates by Iran's NBD study were higher than those for EMR-B by WHO.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The health and disease profile in Iran has made the transition from the dominance of communicable diseases to that of noncommunicable diseases and road traffic injuries. NBD results are to be used in health program planning, research, and resource allocation and generation policies and practices.</p
