    Which Satellite Image should be used for Mapping

    Today, topographical mapping based on satellite images is a standard method. With the large number of very high-resolution optical satellites, it only a question of the Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) and the map scale to be generated. But the classical large-format satellite images are expensive. With the today's variety of the classical small satellites (601kg to 1200kg) to Nano-satellites (1.1kg to 10kg) of 3U (10cm x 10cm x 30cm), various options are available that influence the economic solutions. An overview of the accessible optical satellites is given, with some specific information on the mini-satellites that offer new economical solutions for topographic mapping. Significantly more optical satellites are currently in operation, but their images are used only for military purposes or they are restricted for national use due to lack of image storage and limited download possibilities

    Addressing Class Imbalance for Training a Multi-Task Classifier in the Context of Silk Heritage

    Collecting knowledge in the form of databases consisting of images and descriptive texts that represent objects from past centuries is a fundamental part of preserving cultural heritage. In this context, images with known information about depicted artifacts can serve as a source of information for automated methods to complete existing collections. For instance, image classifiers can provide predictions for different object properties (tasks) to semantically enrich collections. A challenge in this context is to train such classifiers given the nature of existing data: Many images do not come along with a class label for all tasks (incomplete samples) and class distributions are commonly imbalanced. In this paper, these challenges are addressed by a multi-task training strategy for a classifier based on a convolutional neural network (SilkNet) that requires images with class labels for the tasks to be learned. The proposed approach can deal with incomplete training examples, while implicitly taking interdependencies between tasks into account. Extensions of the training approach with a focus on hard examples during training as well as the use of an auxiliary feature clustering are developed to counteract problems with class imbalance. Evaluation is conducted based on a dataset consisting of images of historical silk fabrics with labels for five tasks, i.e. silk properties. A comparison of different variants of the classifier shows that the extensions of the training approach significantly improve the classifier's performance; the average F1-score is up to 5.0% larger, where the largest improvements occur with underrepresented classes of a task (up to +14.3%)

    AN EFFICIENT WEED DETECTION PROCEDURE USING LOW-COST UAV IMAGERY SYSTEM FOR PRECISION AGRICULTURE APPLICATIONS

    The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery systems for Precision Agriculture (PA) applications drew a lot of attention through the last decade. UAV as a platform for an imagery sensor is providing a major advantage as it can provide high spatial resolution images compared to satellite platform. Moreover, it provides the user with the ability to collect the needed images at any time along with the ability to cover the agriculture fields faster than terrestrial platform. Therefore, such UAV imagery systems are capable to fit the gap between aerial and terrestrial Remote Sensing. One of the important PA applications that using UAV imagery system for it showed great potentials is weed management and more specifically the weed detection step. The current weed management procedure depends on spraying the whole agriculture field with chemical herbicides to execute any weed plants in the field. Although such procedure seems to be effective, it has huge effect on the surrounding environment due to the excessive use of the chemical, especially that weed plants don’t cover the whole field. Usually weed plants spread through only few spots of the field. Therefore, different efforts were introduced to develop weed detection techniques using UAV imagery systems. Though the different advantages of the UAV imagery systems, they systems didn’t draw the users interest due to many limitations including the cost of the system. Therefore, the proposed paper introduces a new weed detection methodology from RGB images acquired by low-cost UAV imagery system. The proposed methodology adopts detecting the high-density vegetation spots as indication for weed patches spots. The achieved results showed the potential of the proposed methodology to use low-cost UAV imagery system equipped with low-cost RGB imagery sensor for detecting weed patches in different cropped agriculture fields even from different flight height as 20, 40, 80, and 120 meters

    M-GCLO: Multiple Ground Constrained LiDAR Odometry

    Accurate LiDAR odometry results contribute directly to high-quality point cloud maps. However, traditional LiDAR odometry methods drift easily upward, leading to inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the point cloud maps. Considering abundant and reliable ground points in the Mobile Mapping System(MMS), ground points can be extracted, and constraints can be built to eliminate pose drifts. However, existing LiDAR-based odometry methods either do not use ground point cloud constraints or consider the ground plane as an infinite plane (i.e., single ground constraint), making pose estimation prone to errors. Therefore, this paper is dedicated to developing a Multiple Ground Constrained LiDAR Odometry(M-GCLO) method, which extracts multiple grounds and optimizes those plane parameters for better accuracy and robustness. M-GCLO includes three modules. Firstly, the original point clouds will be classified into the ground and non-ground points. Ground points are voxelized, and multiple ground planes are extracted, parameterized, and optimized to constrain the pose errors. All the non-ground point clouds are used for point-to-distribution matching by maintaining an NDT voxel map. Secondly, a novel method for weighting the residuals is proposed by considering the uncertainties of each point in a scan. Finally, the jacobians and residuals are given along with the weightings for estimating LiDAR states. Experimental results in KITTI and M2DGR datasets show that M-GCLO outperforms state-of-the-art LiDAR odometry methods in large-scale outdoor and indoor scenarios

    Using GHSL to Analyze Urbanization and Land-Use Efficiency in the Philippines from 1975-2020: Trends and Implications for Sustainable Development

    This study analyzed the trends and patterns of urbanization and changes in land-use efficiency in the Philippines from 1975-2020 using the Global Human Settlement Layers (GHSL). Utilizing the GHS-BUILT-S, GHS POP, and GHS-SMOD raster datasets from the GHSL Data Package 2023, we examined the spatiotemporal expansion of built-up areas and the growth of population in urban and rural regions of the country. Using the same datasets, we also measured the country's achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)11.3, particularly on inclusive and sustainable urbanization through efficient land utilization, by computing the ratio of land consumption rate (LCR) to the population growth rate (PGR), also known as LCRPGR. The results of our analysis revealed an increasing trend in the overall built-up area and population of the Philippines within the examined period. Built-up areas and population in urban regions more than tripled in size from 1975 to 2020, demonstrating a notable shift towards more urbanized regions over time. In addition to presenting evidence of the Philippines' developmental progress and urbanization, our analysis of GHSL data shows a decline in land consumption, a deceleration in population growth, and an overall enhancement in land-use efficiency within the country. These findings suggest a shift towards more controlled and sustainable land development practices, supporting the country's goal of sustainable urbanization and land management. The implications of these findings are crucial for policymakers and urban planners in the Philippines, offering valuable insights to guide the formulation of effective and comprehensive land management strategies. Further work includes conducting localized analyses at the city or municipality level to provide valuable insights into the unique urbanization patterns and land-use dynamics across different islands and regions, enabling tailored policy interventions and spatial planning strategies to promote sustainable development

    FEATURE MATCHING ENHANCEMENT OF UAV IMAGES USING GEOMETRIC CONSTRAINTS

    Preliminary matching of image features is based on the distance between their descriptors. Matches are further filtered using RANSAC, or a similar method that fits the matches to a model; usually the fundamental matrix and rejects matches not belonging to that model. There are a few issues with this scheme. First, mismatches are no longer considered after RANSAC rejection. Second, RANSAC might fail to detect an accurate model if the number of outliers is significant. Third, a fundamental matrix model could be degenerate even if the matches are all inliers. To address these issues, a new method is proposed that relies on the prior knowledge of the images’ geometry, which can be obtained from the orientation sensors or a set of initial matches. Using a set of initial matches, a fundamental matrix and a global homography can be estimated. These two entities are then used with a detect-and-match strategy to gain more accurate matches. Features are detected in one image, then the locations of their correspondences in the other image are predicted using the epipolar constraints and the global homography. The feature correspondences are then corrected with template matching. Since global homography is only valid with a plane-to-plane mapping, discrepancy vectors are introduced to represent an alternative to local homographies. The method was tested on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images, where the images are usually taken successively, and differences in scale and orientation are not an issue. The method promises to find a well-distributed set of matches over the scene structure, especially with scenes of multiple depths. Furthermore; the number of outliers is reduced, encouraging to use a least square adjustment instead of RANSAC, to fit a non-degenerate model

    Vehicle Pose and Shape Estimation in UAV Imagery Using a CNN

    Vehicle reconstruction from single aerial images is an important but challenging task. In this work, we introduce a new framework based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) that performs monocular detection, pose, shape and type estimation for vehicles in UAV imagery, taking advantage of a strong 3D object model. In the final training phase, all components of the model are trained end-to-end. We present a UAV-based dataset for the evaluation of our model and additionally evaluate it on an augmented version of the Hessingheim benchmark dataset. Our method presents encouraging pose and shape estimation results: Based on images of 3 cm GSD, it achieves median errors of up to 5 cm in position and 3◦ in orientation, and RMS errors of ±7 cm and ±24 cm in planimetry and height, respectively, for keypoints describing the car shape

    EVALUATION OF DYNAMIC AD-HOC UWB INDOOR POSITIONING SYSTEM

    Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology has witnessed tremendous development and advancement in the past few years. Currently available UWB transceivers can provide high-precision time-of-flight measurements which corresponds to range measurements with theoretical accuracy of few centimetres. Position estimation using range measurement is determined by measuring the ranges from a rover or a dynamic node, to a set of anchor points with known positions. However, building a flexible and accurate indoor positioning system requires more than just accurate range measurements. The performance of indoor positioning system is affected by the number and the configuration of the anchor points used, along with the accuracy of the anchor positions.This paper introduces LocSpeck, a dynamic ad-hoc positioning system based on the DW1000 UWB transceiver from Decawave. LocSpeck is composed of a set of identical nodes communicating on a common RF channel, forming a fully or partially connected network where the positioning algorithm run on each node. Each LocSpeck node could act as an anchor or a rover, and the role could change dynamically during the same session. The number of nodes in the network could change dynamically, since the firmware of LocSpeck supports adding and removing nodes on-the-fly. The paper compares the performance of the LocSpeck system with commercially available off-the-shelf UWB positioning system. Different operating scenarios are considered when evaluating the performance of the system, including cases where collaboration between the two systems is considered.</p
