Helicopter main-rotor speed effects: A comparison of predicted ranges of detection from the aural detection program ICHIN and the electronic detection program ARCAS
NASA LaRC personnel have conducted a strudy of the predicted acoustic detection ranges associated with reduced helicopter main rotor speeds. This was accomplished by providing identical input information to both the aural detection program ICHIN 6, (I Can Hear It Now, version 6) and the electronic acoustic detection program ARCAS (Assessment of Rotorcraft Detection by Acoustics Sensing). In this study, it was concluded that reducing the main rotor speed of the helicopter by 27 percent reduced both the predicted aural and electronic detection ranges by approximately 50 percent. Additionally, ARCAS was observed to function better with narrowband spectral input than with one-third octave band spectral inputs and the predicted electronic range of acoustic detection is greater than the predicted aural detection range
Helicopter far-field acoustic levels as a function of reduced main-rotor advancing blade-tip Mach number
During the design of a helicopter, the weight, engine, rotor speed, and rotor geometry are given significant attention when considering the specific operations for which the helicopter will be used. However, the noise radiated from the helicopter and its relationship to the design variables is currently not well modeled with only a limited set of full-scale field test data to study. In general, limited field data have shown that reduced main-rotor advancing blade-tip Mach numbers result in reduced far-field noise levels. The status of a recent helicopter noise research project is reviewed. It is designed to provide flight experimental data which may be used to further understand helicopter main-rotor advancing blade-tip Mach number effects on far-field acoustic levels. Preliminary results are presented relative to tests conducted with a Sikorsky S-76A helicopter operating with both the rotor speed and the flight speed as the control variable. The rotor speed was operated within the range of 107 to 90 percent NR at nominal forward speeds of 35, 100, and 155 knots
The Effects of Linear Microphone Array Changes on Computed Sound Exposure Level Footprints
Airport land planning commissions often are faced with determining how much area around an airport is affected by the sound exposure levels (SELS) associated with helicopter operations. This paper presents a study of the effects changing the size and composition of a microphone array has on the computed SEL contour (ground footprint) areas used by such commissions. Descent flight acoustic data measured by a fifteen microphone array were reprocessed for five different combinations of microphones within this array. This resulted in data for six different arrays for which SEL contours were computed. The fifteen microphone array was defined as the 'baseline' array since it contained the greatest amount of data. The computations used a newly developed technique, the Acoustic Re-propagation Technique (ART), which uses parts of the NASA noise prediction program ROTONET. After the areas of the SEL contours were calculated the differences between the areas were determined. The area differences for the six arrays are presented that show a five and a three microphone array (with spacing typical of that required by the FAA FAR Part 36 noise certification procedure) compare well with the fifteen microphone array. All data were obtained from a database resulting from a joint project conducted by NASA and U.S. Army researchers at Langley and Ames Research Centers. A brief description of the joint project test design, microphone array set-up, and data reduction methodology associated with the database are discussed

The design of a helicopter is based on an understanding of many parameters and their interactions. For example, in the design stage of a helicopter, the weight, engine, and rotor speed must be considered along with the rotor geometry when considering helicopter operations. However, the relationship between the noise radiated from the helicopter and these parameters is not well understood, with only limited model and full-scale test data to study. In general, these data have shown that reduced rotor speeds result in reduced far-field noise levels. This paper reviews the status of a recent helicopter noise research project designed to provide experimental flight data to be used to better understand helicopter rotor-speed effects on far-field acoustic levels. Preliminary results are presented relative to tests conducted with a McDonnell Douglas model 500E helicopter operating with the rotor speed as the control variable over the range of 103% of the main-rotor speed (NR) to 75% NR, and with the forward speed maintained at a constant value of 80 knots
Acoustic flight tests of rotorcraft noise-abatement approaches using local differential GPS guidance
This paper presents the test design, instrumentation set-up, data acquisition, and the results of an acoustic flight experiment to study how noise due to blade-vortex interaction (BVI) may be alleviated. The flight experiment was conducted using the NASA/Army Rotorcraft Aircrew Systems Concepts Airborne Laboratory (RASCAL) research helicopter. A Local Differential Global Positioning System (LDGPS) was used for precision navigation and cockpit display guidance. A laser-based rotor state measurement system on board the aircraft was used to measure the main rotor tip-path-plane angle-of-attack. Tests were performed at Crows Landing Airfield in northern California with an array of microphones similar to that used in the standard ICAO/FAA noise certification test. The methodology used in the design of a RASCAL-specific, multi-segment, decelerating approach profile for BVI noise abatement is described, and the flight data pertaining to the flight technical errors and the acoustic data for assessing the noise reduction effectiveness are reported
Role of the nonperturbative input in QCD resummed Drell-Yan -distributions
We analyze the role of the nonperturbative input in the Collins, Soper, and
Sterman (CSS)'s -space QCD resummation formalism for Drell-Yan transverse
momentum () distributions, and investigate the predictive power of the CSS
formalism. We find that the predictive power of the CSS formalism has a strong
dependence on the collision energy in addition to its well-known
dependence, and the dependence improves the predictive power
at collider energies. We show that a reliable extrapolation from perturbatively
resummed -space distributions to the nonperturbative large region is
necessary to ensure the correct distributions. By adding power
corrections to the renormalization group equations in the CSS formalism, we
derive a new extrapolation formalism. We demonstrate that at collider energies,
the CSS resummation formalism plus our extrapolation has an excellent
predictive power for and production at all transverse momenta . We also show that the -space resummed distributions provide a good

A-dependence of nuclear transparency in quasielastic A(e,e'p) at high Q^2
The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e,e'p) reaction has been studied at
SLAC with H-2, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q^2 = 1, 3, 5, and
6.8 (GeV/c)^2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A,Q^2), a measure of the
average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without
interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with
momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. No significant

Inclusive Electron Scattering from Nuclei at
The inclusive A(e,e') cross section for was measured on H,
C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers from 1-7 (GeV/c). The scaling
behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y-scaling to
