    Specific-Heat Measurement of Residual Superconductivity in the Normal State of Underdoped Cuprate Superconductors

    We have measured the magnetic field and temperature dependence of specific heat on Bi2Sr2−xLaxCuO6+δBi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+\delta} single crystals in wide doping and temperature regions. The superconductivity related specific heat coefficient γsc\gamma_{sc} and entropy SscS_{sc} are determined. It is found that γsc\gamma_{sc} has a hump-like anomaly at TcT_c and behaves as a long tail which persists far into the normal state for the underdoped samples, but for the heavily overdoped samples the anomaly ends sharply just near TcT_c. Interestingly, we found that the entropy associated with superconductivity is roughly conserved when and only the long tail part in the normal state is taken into account for the underdoped samples, indicating the residual superconductivity above Tc_c.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Alteration in the sensitivity to crizotinib by Na+/H+ exchanger regulatory factor 1 is dependent to its subcellular localization in ALK-positive lung cancers

    BackgroundNa+/H+ exchanger regulatory factor 1 (NHERF1) is an important scaffold protein participates in the modulation of a variety of intracellular signal pathways. NHERF1 was able to enhance the effects of chemo-drugs in breast and cervical cancer cells. Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion mutations are validated molecules targeted therapy in lung cancers, where crizotinib can be used as the specific inhibitor to suppress tumor progression. However, due to the less frequent occurrence of ALK mutations and the complexity for factors to determine drug responses, the genes that could alter crizotinib sensitivity are unclear.MethodsBoth ALK-translocated and ALK-negative lung adenocarcinoma specimens in tissue sections were collected for immunohistochemistry. The possible mechanisms of NHERF1 and its role in the cell sensitivity to crizotinib were investigated using an ALK-positive and crizotinib-sensitive lung adenocarcinoma cell line H3122. Either a NHERF1 overexpression vector or agents for NHERF1 knockdown was used for crizotinib sensitivity measures, in association with cell viability and apoptosis assays.ResultsThe expression level of NHERF1 in ALK-translocated NSCLC was significantly higher than that in other lung cancer tissues. NHERF1 expression in ALK positive lung cancer cells was regulated by ALK activities, and was in return able to alter the sensitivity to crizotinib. The function of NHERF1 to influence crizotinib sensitivity was depending on its subcellular distribution in cytosol instead of its nucleus localized form.ConclusionEctopically overexpressed NHERF1 could be a functional protein for consideration to suppress lung cancers. The determination of NHERF1 levels in ALK positive NSCLC tissues might be useful to predict crizotinib resistance, especially by distinguishing cytosolic or nuclear localized NHERF1 for the overexpressed molecules

    We, for anti-quantum computing, will discuss various number-based strings, such as number-based super-strings, parameterized strings, set-based strings, graph-based strings, integer-partitioned and integer-decomposed strings, Hanzi-based strings, as well as algebraic operations based on number-based strings. Moreover, we introduce number-based string-colorings, magic-constraint colorings, and vector-colorings and set-colorings related with strings. For the technique of encrypting the entire network at once, we propose graphic lattices related with number-based strings, Hanzi-graphic lattices, string groups, all-tree-graphic lattices. We study some topics of asymmetric topology cryptography, such as topological signatures, Key-pair graphs, Key-pair strings, one-encryption one-time and self-certification algorithms.     High-temperature high-sensitivity AlN-on-SOI Lamb wave resonant strain sensor

    A piezoelectric AlN-on-SOI structured MEMS Lamb wave resonator (LWR) is presented for high-temperature strain measurement. The LWR has a composite membrane of a 1 μm thick AlN film and a 30 μm thick device silicon layer. The excited acoustic waves include Rayleigh wave and Lamb waves. A tensile strain sensor has been prepared with one LWR mounted on a uniaxial tensile plate, and its temperature characteristics from 15.4°C to 250°C and tensile strain behaviors from 0 μϵ to 400 μϵ of Rayleigh wave and S4 mode Lamb wave were tested. The temperature test verifies the adaptability of the tensile strain sensor to temperature up to 250°C, and S4 mode Lamb wave and Rayleigh wave represent almost the same temperature characteristics. The strain test demonstrates that S4 mode Lamb wave shows much higher strain sensitivity (-0.48 ppm/μϵ) than Rayleigh wave (0.05 ppm/μϵ) and confirms its advantage of strain sensitivity. Finally, for this one-LWR strain sensor, a method of beat frequency between S4 mode Lamb wave and Rayleigh wave is proposed for temperature compensation and high-sensitivity strain readout

    Purification and characterization of a novel defensin from the salivary glands of the black fly, Simulium bannaense

    BACKGROUND: Black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are haematophagous insects that can cause allergic reactions and act as vectors of pathogens. Although their saliva has been thought to contain a diverse array of physiologically active molecules, little information is available on antimicrobial factors in black fly salivary glands, especially no defensins have been reported so far. METHODS: A novel cationic defensin designated SibaDef was purified using reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) from the salivary glands of the black fly Simulium bannaense. The amino acid sequence of SibaDef was determined by a combination method of automated Edman degradation and cDNA sequencing. The morphologic changes of Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus or Bacillus subtilis treated with SibaDef were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was performed to analyze the expression of SibaDef mRNA in whole bodies of insects after oral infection with the bacteria S. aureus or B. subtilis. RESULTS: Surprisingly, the phylogenetic analysis of defensin-related amino acid sequences demonstrated that SibaDef is most closely related to defensins from the human body louse Pediculus humanus corporis (Anoplura: Pediculidae), rather than to other dipteran defensins. SibaDef showed potent antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 0.83 μM to 2.29 μM. SEM analysis indicated that SibaDef killed microorganisms through the disruption of cell membrane integrity. The transcript levels of SibaDef in the bacteria-immunized flies increased with the time course, reaching maximum at 36 h and then slowly decreased from that time point. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that SibaDef is involved in the innate humoral response of the black fly S. bannaense, and it might play a significant role in the defence against microorganisms in both sugar and blood meals
