Shallow ice coring and borehole casing at Dome Fuji Station, East Antarctica
A Deep Ice Coring Project at Dome Fuji, East Antarctica has been conducted by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) since 1992. Shallow ice coring of 112m in depth and casing of its borehole at Dome Fuji Station were carried out in December 1993 and January 1994 by JARE-34. The characteristics of snow densification showed similar features to those on Mizuho Plateau. The penetration rate of ice cutting can potentially provide useful information of physical properties of ice
グリーンランド氷床北西部における積雪中のδ18Oと化学成分の空間分布
To determine the transport processes of water vapor and aerosols over the northwestern Greenland ice sheet, we undertook a glaciological observation at a coastal site on the northwestern part of the ice sheet and revealed spatial variations in δ18O and in the concentrations of chemical substances in surface snow and the snowpack. On the outlet glacier (the Meehan glacier), water vapor and sea salt were transported from the coast. On the inland ice sheet in northwestern Greenland, water vapor, mineral dust, anthropogenic substances such as NO3- and SO42-, and CH3SO3- from marine phytoplankton were transported from the west coast of Greenland via the central part of the Greenland ice sheet
Activities of the Japanese Arctic Glaciological Expedetion in 1999 (JAGE 1999) (report)
To reconstruct climatic and environmental changes in Svalbard in the past several hundred years, an ice core was drilled on the summit of Austfonna ice cap, Svalbard (79°50′N, 24°00′E, 750m a. s. l.) to a depth of 289m in May 1999 by a Japan-Norway cooperative project. Ice core stratigraphy measurement, digital camera recording of the ice core, and measurements of bulk density and electrical conductivity of ice (ECM) were conducted in situ. Snow pit observations were carried out at three different sites. Fresh falling snow, drifting snow and surface hoar were sampled
Development of the JARE deep ice coring system (III)
A deep ice coring system for Dome Fuji project has been developed under a project coordinated by the National Institute of Polar Research. Three reports have been issued already, mainly about the development of the drill system. We report here on the drilling site and equipment such as winch, drilling cable, mast, control panels, chip caching tools (filter) and so on as well as the drill. This paper includes an outline of drilling site and work, progress of machine design and final specifications of the above equipment
Ice Core Drilling and the Related Observations at SE-Dome site, southeastern Greenland Ice Sheet
In order to construct reliable deposited-aerosol database on the Anthropocene (from 1850 to 2020), we obtained a 250-meter-long ice core from the Southeastern Greenland Dome on May and June 2021, where is one of the highest accumulation domes in Greenland. The age of the ice core at a depth of 250 m was roughly estimated to be AD 1827 based on the timescale from a previously analyzed shallower ice core. The age of the sampled ice core satisfied the prerequisite conditions for constructing aerosol deposition database for Anthropocene. In addition, surface elevation, borehole temperatures, and internal stratigraphy of the ice sheet were performed, and meteorological and snow-pit observations were also conducted. Furthermore, we sampled aerosol and snow from the ice sheet for chemical and physical analyses
