    Get PDF

SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, Parkinson's disease, and other movement disorders: case series and short literature review

BACKGROUND: Several neurological complications have been reported following SARS-Cov-2 vaccination, without a clear causal relationship ever being verified, including some cases of worsening of Parkinson’s disease (PD) symptoms and new onset of movement disorders in non-parkinsonian patients. METHODS: We describe two new cases of PD patients treated with device-aided therapy who developed worsening of parkinsonian symptoms after receiving the third vaccine dose (booster). We also conducted a short review of the cases reported in literature of PD symptoms worsening and new onset of movement disorders in non-parkinsonian patients after SARS-Cov-2 vaccination. RESULTS: The first patient, a 46-year-old man implanted with bilateral Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation, experienced temporary motor and non-motor symptoms worsening after mRNA-1273 booster, improved after stimulation settings modification. The second patient, a 55-year-old man implanted with percutaneous endoscopic transgastric jejunostomy (PEG-J) for levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) infusion experienced severe temporary worsening of dyskinesia and managed through temporary LCIG dose reduction. Other seven cases of vaccine-related movement disorder are currently reported in literature, four describing PD symptoms worsening and three the onset of new movement disorders in otherwise healthy people. CONCLUSION: Both our patients and the cases described so far completely recovered after few days with parkinsonian therapy modification, symptomatic treatment, or even spontaneously, underlining the transient and benign nature of side effects from vaccine. Patients should be reassured about these complications, manageable through a prompt evaluation by the reference neurologist. Machine Learning for Mini-EUSO Telescope Data Analysis

Neural networks as well as other methods of machine learning (ML) are known to be highly efficient in different classification tasks, including classification of images and videos. Mini- EUSO is a wide-field-of-view imaging telescope that operates onboard the International Space Station since 2019 collecting data on miscellaneous processes that take place in the atmosphere of Earth in the UV range. Here we briefly present our results on the development of ML-based approaches for recognition and classification of track-like signals in the Mini-EUSO data, among them meteors, space debris and signals the light curves and kinematics of which are similar to those expected from extensive air showers generated by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. We show that even simple neural networks demonstrate impressive performance in solving these tasks.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, ICRC2023 conferenc

UV telescope TUS on board Lomonosov satellite: Selected results of the mission

The Tracking Ultraviolet Setup (TUS) was the first orbital detector aimed to check the possibility of recording ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at E≳100 EeV by measuring the fluorescence signal of extensive air showers in the atmosphere. TUS was an experiment funded by the Russian Space Agency ROSCOSMOS, and it operated as a part of the scientific payload of the Lomonosov satellite since April 2016 till late 2017. During its mission, TUS registered almost 80,000 events in its main operation mode, with a few of them being sufficiently interesting to be more deeply scrutinized as they showed light profile and duration similar to UHECR events, even though much brighter. At the same time, the data acquired by TUS in different acquisition modes have been used to search for more exotic matter such us strangelets and nuclearites, and to measure occurrence, time profile and signal amplitude of different classes of transient luminous events among other scientific objectives, showing the interdisciplinary capability of a space-based observatory for UHECRs. In this paper, we report a selection of studies and results obtained with the TUS telescope which will be presented and placed in the contest of the present and future missions dedicated to the observation of UHECRs from space such as Mini-EUSO, K-EUSO and POEMMA

COVID-19 and Parkinson's disease: what do we know so far?

Background: Many studies on Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients affected by Coronavirus-disease-2019 (COVID-19) were recently published. However, the small sample size of infected patients enrolled in most studies did not allow to draw robust conclusions on the COVID-19 impact in PD. Objective: We aimed to assess whether the prevalence and outcome of COVID-19 in PD patients are different from those observed in the general population. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of studies reporting data on PD patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19 (PD-COVID+). We extracted prevalence, clinical-demographic data, outcome, and mortality. We also analyzed risk or protective factors based on comparisons between PD-COVID+ and control populations with PD without COVID-19 or without PD with COVID-19. Results: We included 16 studies reporting on a total of 11,325 PD patients, 1,061 with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. The median infection prevalence ranged from 0.6% to 8.5%. PD-COVID+ patients had a median age of 74 and a disease duration of 9.4 years. Pooling all PD-COVID+ patients from included studies, 28.6% required hospitalization, 37.1% required levodopa dose increasing, and 18.9% died. The case fatality was higher in PD-COVID+ patients than the general population, with longer PD duration as a possible risk factor for worse outcome. Amantadine and vitamin D were proposed as potential protective factors. Conclusion: Available studies indicate a higher case fatality in PD patients affected by COVID-19 than the general population. Conversely, current literature does not definitively clarify whether PD patients are more susceptible to get infected. The potential protective role of vitamin D and amantadine is intriguing but deserves further investigation

Incidence of Second Primary Cancer in Transplanted Patients

Background. Solid organ transplanted patients have a three-to fourfold higher lifetime risk of developing a cancer than the general population. However, the incidence of a second primary cancer in transplanted patients has never been studied, despite the fact that the presence of regular follow-ups and the increased survival of these patients make them a very attractive model. Methods. We investigated the incidence of a second primary cancer (SPC) in 7,636 patients who underwent a kidney, liver, lung or heart transplant between 1970 and 2004, and were followed-up for 51,819 person-years. Results. During the follow-up, 499 subjects developed a first cancer (annual incidence: 98.6Ï«10,000 PY), and 22 of them developed a SPC (annual incidence: 3.9Ï«10,000 PY). The annual incidence of a SPC in the transplanted patients who developed a first cancer was 107.8Ï«10,000 PY, giving a standardized incidence ratio of 1.1 (95% CI: 0.83-1.41). Conclusions. This result shows that the incidence of the SPC was the same as the incidence of a first cancer. Our study does not indicate an increased risk of SPC in transplanted subjects who already suffered a first malignancy
