Site evaluation for laser satellite-tracking stations
Twenty-six locations for potential laser satellite-tracking stations, four of them actually already occupied in this role, are reviewed in terms of their known local and regional geology and geophysics. The sites are also considered briefly in terms of weather and operational factors. Fifteen of the sites qualify as suitable for a stable station whose motions are likely to reflect only gross plate motion. The others, including two of the present laser station sites (Arequipa and Athens), fail to qualify unless extra monitoring schemes can be included, such as precise geodetic surveying of ground deformation
Optical Turbulence Measurements and Models for Mount John University Observatory
Site measurements were collected at Mount John University Observatory in 2005
and 2007 using a purpose-built scintillation detection and ranging system.
profiling indicates a weak layer located at 12 - 14 km above sea
level and strong low altitude turbulence extending up to 5 km. During calm
weather conditions, an additional layer was detected at 6 - 8 km above sea
level. profiling suggests that tropopause layer velocities are nominally
12 - 30 m/s, and near-ground velocities range between 2 -- 20 m/s, dependent on
weather. Little seasonal variation was detected in either and
profiles. The average coherence length, , was found to be cm for
the full profile at a wavelength of 589 nm. The average isoplanatic angle,
, was arcsec. The mean turbulence altitude,
, was found to be km above sea level. No average in the
Greenwood frequency, , could be established due to the gaps present in the
\vw\s profiles obtained. A modified Hufnagel-Valley model was developed to
describe the profiles at Mount John, which estimates at 6 cm
and at 0.9 arcsec. A series of models were developed, based
on the Greenwood wind model with an additional peak located at low altitudes.
Using the model and the suggested model for moderate ground
wind speeds, is estimated at 79 Hz.Comment: 14 pages; accepted for publication in PAS
QED self-energy contribution to highly-excited atomic states
We present numerical values for the self-energy shifts predicted by QED
(Quantum Electrodynamics) for hydrogenlike ions (nuclear charge ) with an electron in an , 4 or 5 level with high angular momentum
(). Applications include predictions of precision transition
energies and studies of the outer-shell structure of atoms and ions.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Particle Detection Algorithms for Complex Plasmas
In complex plasmas, the behavior of freely floating micrometer sized
particles is studied. The particles can be directly visualized and recorded by
digital video cameras. To analyze the dynamics of single particles, reliable
algorithms are required to accurately determine their positions to sub-pixel
accuracy from the recorded images. Typically, straightforward algorithms are
used for this task. Here, we combine the algorithms with common techniques for
image processing. We study several algorithms and pre- and post-processing
methods, and we investigate the impact of the choice of threshold parameters,
including an automatic threshold detection. The results quantitatively show
that each algorithm and method has its own advantage, often depending on the
problem at hand. This knowledge is applicable not only to complex plasmas, but
useful for any kind of comparable image-based particle tracking, e.g. in the
field of colloids or granular matter
The s-process branching at 185W
The neutron capture cross section of the unstable nucleus 185W has been
derived from experimental photoactivation data of the inverse reaction
186W(gamma,n)185W. The new result of sigma = (687 +- 110) mbarn confirms the
theoretically predicted neutron capture cross section of 185W of sigma = 700
mbarn at kT = 30 keV. A neutron density in the classical s-process of n_n =
(3.8 +0.9 -0.8} * 1e8 cm-3 is derived from the new data for the 185W branching.
In a stellar s-process model one finds a significant overproduction of the
residual s-only nucleus 186Os.Comment: ApJ, in pres
