Understanding Leadership Principles and Team Dynamics in Nonprofit Settings: A Study of Short and Long-Term Missionary Teams

    Get PDF
Have you ever pondered how to form the most effective leadership team for missionary work? Missionary work is extremely important to the Christian Church and building leaders within the church community. Without them, others wouldn’t get to hear the gospel. This research could benefit someone who wants to pursue a career in ministry. One field of ministry and possible career choice someone could pursue is to become a missionary. Performing this research means learning more about how to be effective in a career choice such as a missionary. In addition to that, it could benefit someone who is a business major. In this major a person learns a lot about teamwork and leadership and is exposed to working in some highly effective teams, and also some that are not so effective. This research will discover how missionary teams (both short and long-term) can be most effective in accomplishing the task at hand. It will also show what leadership looks like on a mission field and how to bring that leadership, along with a short-term team, to be most helpful to the missionaries already on the field. The findings from this research will help those in the field of ministry to become the best missionary they can be, whether they become a long-term missionary on the field, or occasionally go to help on short-term trips

Assessing a hydrothermal liquefaction process using biomass feedstocks

The need to reduce the United States dependence on foreign oil has never been greater. In the past decade emphasis has been placed on developing new and/or improved means to procure clean renewable energy. Liquefaction, which was developed for coal conversion over a century ago is one of these areas. Liquefaction used for biomass conversions to bio-oils is grouped under the thermochemical conversion (TCC) area of energy conversion methods along with gasification and pyrolysis. This thesis discusses liquefaction experiments conducted using varieties of Louisiana biomass feedstocks. Dairy manure collected from the Louisiana State University Dairy Farm in Baton Rouge, was the main feedstock studied using various temperatures (250-350)°C and catalysts (Na2CO3, NaOH, and K2CO3) to determine optimum operating conditions for these two parameters. A bench scale 300 ml pressure vessel was used to conduct hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) experiments. The HTL process yielded oil products (hydrocarbons) for all experiments. Temperature was found to have a significant influence (P \u3c0.05) on bio-oil energy content. One gram of sodium carbonate coupled with a processing temperature of 350°C is recommended as the optimum processing conditions for dairy manure in this study. However, the catalyst amount and type had had no significant effect (P \u3e 0.05) on bio-oil when compared to no catalyst. Minimal differences were found when statistically comparing the types and quantities of catalysts with one another. Temperatures of at least 350°C are recommended for conversion of dairy manure to oil; although higher temperature trials were not conducted due to pressure vessel limitations. All additional feedstocks tested (tallowseed, switchgrass, pine sawdust, and poultry litter) yielded heating values that were comparable or higher than the 34.7MJ kg-1 reported as the maximum heating value for dairy manure oils. Oil yields are reported in the range of 20-33% on an organic basis

This study evaluated the impact of service-learning infused courses on multicultural competence and social justice advocacy skills among counseling students. The project, in which students acted as job-coaches for refugee families, was integrated into a first year and second year counseling course. Results indicated an increase in multicultural knowledge and advocacy skills, with greater changes reported among first year students. Implications for counselor training including placement of service-learning projects within the counseling curriculum are discussed

Training Elementary School Students to Intervene as Peer-Advocates to Stop Bullying at School: A Pilot Study

    Get PDF
The prevalence of bullying among children has prompted the development of school- based programs to address this problem. This pilot study evaluated the effectiveness of a brief, standalone bystander bullying program for elementary school students. The purpose to the program was to train students to take action as peer-advocates. After completing the 75-minute program, students reported an increase in their ability to identify what different types of bullying look like, knowledge of bystander intervention strategies, and general confidence intervening as peer-advocates. Furthermore, fifth grade students showed the greatest response to the program. Implications for school counselors as leaders in program implementation and future directions for research are discussed
