Rural tourism plays an important social and developmental role through the provision of additional income, especially in mountainous and disadvantaged areas. It contributes to the development and revitalization of rural areas, while strengthening the protection of natural resources. Consequently, in the last decades there has been much research examining the phenomenon of rural tourism, the problems faced by rural tourism businesses, etc. Although, there have been too many studies on rural tourism, they have not examined the progress of rural tourism research. Very little analysis has been conducted on the content of articles that examine this important area. The purpose of this study is to determine the progress in rural tourism research up to date by using content analysis technique on published articles in the most significant academic journals, with the aim of identifying focus areas and providing future research directions

Demographic Characteristics Influencing Religious Tourism Behaviour: Evidence form a Central-Eastern-European country

Although religious tourism and pilgrimage have been widely studied there is very limited research that explores the peculiarities in attitude and behaviour among tourists with different demographic factors. The present exploratory study enhances the discussion on perception of religious tourism behaviour. Specifically, eleven statements on attitude and behaviour were explored among 345 Hungarians with different socio-demographic backgrounds. The results show that there are significant variations between senior and young travellers: seniors see as important, the educational purposes and feelings of national identity related to sacred sites while these are less motivating for the young. The frequency of participating in religious tourism is also a determining factor: frequent travellers donate more and are more willing to purchase ‘sacred’ souvenirs. The findings provide inputs for developing a new scale to measure attitude and related behaviour in religious tourism. Furthermore, practical implications of the research are relevant to managers of sacred sites because a better understanding of visitors’ behaviour would enhance market segmentation and marketing to target groups

Assessing Tourism Development from Sen’s Capability Approach

The purpose of this study is to assess tourism development in the context of Sen’s capability approach. The study developed a model to investigate the relationship between tourism development and human development while focusing on two countries, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The study applied a cointegration technique based on the Granger representation theorem. Overall, tourism development and human development reveals a tenuous relationship in both cases, reflecting some threshold effect. The importance of tourism growth is merited in the distribution of its benefits and the extent that tourism receipts are allocated to support human development (public health, education, safety, etc.). Rising incomes will not necessarily translate into human development performance, thereby rendering support to Sen’s contention that well-being should not be measured by its instrumental antecedents (such as income) alone. Private incomes through tourism expansion seem to matter most at lower levels of human development

The contribution of tourism to well-being and welfare: the case of Hungary

In the process of achieving well-being and welfare, tourism may act as a stimulus on many levels. Based on two national surveys conducted by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office in 2007, and by the Geographical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the Kodolanyi Janos University of Applied Sciences, the paper explores the influence of tourism on the Hungarian society's perception of well-being and welfare. The research findings indicate that although various benefits of tourism are acknowledged, it is not considered a crucial component of one's quality of life. The analysis of socio-cultural factors indicates that age and financial circumstances affect the contribution of tourism to well-being: a person's financial situation and age determine, to a great extent, the role of travel in their life, and consequently also influences the function of travel as a happiness-inducing factor.well-being, welfare, quality of life, tourism, Hungary, sociocultural factors, age, financial circumstances, travel,
