Upper Surface Nacelle Influence on SCAR Aerodynamic Characteristics at Transonic Speeds
The arrow-wing transport configuration with detached engines located over the wing to produce upper surface exhaust flow effects was tested at angles of attack from -4 deg to 8 deg and jet total-pressure ratios from 1 (Jet off) to approximately 10. Wing tip leading edge flap deflections of -10 deg to 10 deg were tested with the wing-body configuration only (no nacelles). Tests were made with various nacelle chordwise, spanwise, and vertical height locations over the Mach number, angle of attack, and jet total-pressure ratio ranges. Deflecting the wing tip leading edge flap from 0 deg to -10 deg increased maximum lift to drag ratio by 1.0 at subsonic speeds. Installation of upper surface nacelles (no wing/nacelle pylons) increased the wing-body pitching moment at all Mach numbers and decreased the drag of the wing-body configuration at subsonic Mach numbers. Transonic aerodynamic characteristics of a supersonic cruise aircraft research model with the engines suspended above the wing
The influence of upper-surface nacelle exhaust flow on the aerodynamic characteristics of a supersonic cruise aircraft research configuration was investigated in a 16 foot transonic tunnel over a range of Mach numbers from 0.60 to 1.20. The arrow-wing transport configuration with engines suspended over the wing was tested at angles of attack from -4 deg to 6 deg and jet total pressure ratios from 1 to approximately 13. Wing-tip leading edge flap deflections of -10 deg to 10 deg were tested with the wing-body configuration. Various nacelle locations (chordwise, spanwise, and vertical) were tested over the ranges of Mach numbers, angles of attack, and jet total-pressure ratios. The results show that reflecting the wing-tip leading edge flap from 0 deg to -10 deg increased the maximum lift-drag ratio by 1.0 at subsonic speeds. Jet exhaust interference effects were negligible
General practitioner empathy, patient enablement, and patient-reported outcomes in primary care in an area of high socio-economic deprivation in Scotland - a pilot prospective study using structural equation modelling
<b>Objective</b> The aim of this pilot prospective study was to investigate the relationships between general practitioners (GPs) empathy, patient enablement, and patient-assessed outcomes in primary care consultations in an area of high socio-economic deprivation in Scotland.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> This prospective study was carried out in a five-doctor practice in an area of high socio-economic deprivation in Scotland. Patients’ views on the consultation were gathered using the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure and the Patient Enablement Instrument (PEI). Changes in main complaint and well-being 1 month after the contact consultation were gathered from patients by postal questionnaire. The effect of GP empathy on patient enablement and prospective change in outcome was investigated using structural equation modelling.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> 323 patients completed the initial questionnaire at the contact consultation and of these 136 (42%) completed and returned the follow-up questionnaire at 1 month. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the construct validity of the CARE Measure, though omission of two of the six PEI items was required in order to reach an acceptable global data fit. The structural equation model revealed a direct positive relationship between GP empathy and patient enablement at contact consultation and a prospective relationship between patient enablement and changes in main complaint and well-being at 1 month.<p></p>
<b>Conclusion</b> In a high deprivation setting, GP empathy is associated with patient enablement at consultation, and enablement predicts patient-rated changes 1 month later. Further larger studies are desirable to confirm or refute these findings.<p></p>
<b>Practice implications</b> Ways of increasing GP empathy and patient enablement need to be established in order to maximise patient outcomes. Consultation length and relational continuity of care are known factors; the benefit of training and support for GPs needs to be further investigate

The association of seasonal influenza vaccination with pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 infection
Letter to the editor; Comment on Vaccine. 2011 Nov 15, v. 29 n. 49, p. 9194-200In 2010 Skowronski and colleagues reported that seasonal influenza vaccine appeared to increase the risk of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 (pH1N1) infection during the first pandemic wave in Canada [1]. They suggested a number of possible explanations for their unexpected finding: firstly, that the results were an artefact of selection bias or confounding; secondly, that the results were due to partial mediation through a biological mechanism; and thirdly, that the results were due to a direct immune mechanism, such as antibody dependent enhancement [1]. In a recent paper in Vaccine, Rosella and colleagues have investigated in detail the first of these possibilities, confirming that it is unlikely an unidentified confounder could have explained the findings [2]. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.postprin
Identification of a predicted partner-switching system that affects production of the gene transfer agent RcGTA and stationary phase viability in Rhodobacter capsulatus
Background: Production of the gene transfer agent RcGTA in the α-proteobacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus is dependent upon the response regulator protein CtrA. Loss of this regulator has widespread effects on transcription in R. capsulatus, including the dysregulation of numerous genes encoding other predicted regulators. This includes a set of putative components of a partner-switching signaling pathway with sequence homology to the σ-regulating proteins RsbV, RsbW, and RsbY that have been extensively characterized for their role in stress responses in gram-positive bacteria. These R. capsulatus homologues, RbaV, RbaW, and RbaY, have been investigated for their possible role in controlling RcGTA gene expression.
Results: A mutant strain lacking rbaW showed a significant increase in RcGTA gene expression and production. Mutation of rbaV or rbaY led to a decrease in RcGTA gene expression and production, and these mutants also showed decreased viability in the stationary phase and produced unusual colony morphologies. In vitro and in vivo protein interaction assays demonstrated that RbaW and RbaV interact. A combination of gene disruptions and protein-protein interaction assays were unsuccessful in attempts to identify a cognate σ factor, and the genetic data support a model where the RbaV protein that is the determinant regulator of RcGTA gene expression in this system.
Conclusions: These findings provide new information about RcGTA regulation by a putative partner-switching system and further illustrate the integration of RcGTA production into R. capsulatus physiology
