    Non-Measles Hemadsorption in a Cell Line Persistently Infected with Measles Virus (BGM/MV)

    Adsorption of Rhesus monkey erythrocytes to the plasma membranes of measles virus infected cells is frequently carried out to detect the presence of plasma membrane-associated measles virus hemagglutinin. The hemagglutinin is a viral genome-coded structural glycoprotein of the measles virion that is associated with the plasma membrane of the host cell during measles virus replication. BGM/MV, anon-virogenic line of African green monkey kidney cells persistently-infected with measles virus, adsorbed Rhesus monkey erythrocytes in an inverse fashion relative to the number of cells present in the culture and the time post-seeding. Serological studies employing the hemadsorption-inhibition and membrane immunofluorescence assay procedures, suggested that this phenomenon was not mediated by the viral hemagglutinin. Assays for Simian virus-5 and mycoplasma, contaminating agents that induce erythrocyte adsorption, were negative. Incubation of BGM/MV cells at 33°C or with graded concentrations of fetal calf serum, to stimulate the metabolism of resting (Go) cells, suggested that adsorption was related to a phase(s) of the cell growth cycle other than Go₁, for adsorption was prolonged and stimulated in a dose-response fashion, respectively. Comparative adsorption studies employing the parent cell line (BGM), not infected with measles virus, were performed using various species of erythrocytes. While both cell lines adsorbed Rhesus monkey erythrocytes in an inverse fashion relative to cell density, differences were noted in the adsorption of some of the other species of erythrocytes. These data suggest that Rhesus monkey erythrocyte adsorption to BGM/MV cells was mediated by a receptor(s) of cellular origin

    Intraoperative bronchial stump air leak control by Progel® application after pulmonary lobectomy

    Diffuse tracheobronchial calcification is a physiological condition associated with advanced age, especially in women. A calcified bronchus can be fractured during major lung resections (lobectomy, bilobectomy, and pneumonectomy), exposing patients to intraoperative air leakage and broncho-pleural fistula (BPF) occurrence. We retrospectively evaluated the use of Progel® application on the suture line of bronchial stump after pulmonary lobectomy analysing the intraoperative air leak and BPF occurrence. Between January 2014 and December 2014, Progel® was applied in 11 patients who presented intraoperative bronchial fractures after suture resection by mechanical staplers and air leak from bronchial stump, in order to treat air leakage. Patients were 7 men and 4 women, aged between 56 and 81 years (mean age 71.2 ± 12.1 years). Surgical procedures included 6 upper lobectomies (4 right, 2 left), 1 bilobectomy and 4 lower lobectomies (3 right, 1 left). Mean hospital stay was 4.5 ± 2.6 days (2-8 days). None of the patients had postoperative air leakage. No Progel® application-related complications occurred. No other major complications occurred. No mortality occurred. Progel® proved to be useful in treating intraoperative air leakage during major lung resections, particularly those occurring as a result of fracture of the bronchus from a mechanical stapler

    Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Occurrence of ESKAPE Bacteria Group in Dogs, and the Related Zoonotic Risk in Animal-Assisted Therapy, and in Animal-Assisted Activity in the Health Context

    Animal-assisted interventions are widely implemented in different contexts worldwide. Particularly, animal-assisted therapies and animal-assisted activities are often implemented in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and other health facilities. These interventions bring several benefits to patients but can also expose them to the risk of infection with potentially zoonotic agents. The dog is the main animal species involved used in these interventions. Therefore, we aimed at collecting data regarding the occurrence of the pathogens ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter spp.) in dogs, in order to draft guidelines concerning the possible monitoring of dogs involved in animal-assisted therapies and animal-assisted activities in healthcare facilities. We performed a literature search using the PRISMA guidelines to examine three databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Out of 2604 records found, 52 papers were identified as eligible for inclusion in the review/meta-analysis. Sixteen papers reported data on E. faecium; 16 on S. aureus; nine on K. pneumoniae; four on A. baumannii; eight on P. aeruginosa; and six on Enterobacter spp. This work will contribute to increased awareness to the potential zoonotic risks posed by the involvement of dogs in animal-assisted therapies, and animal-assisted activities in healthcare facilities

    Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli perehtyä kohdeyrityksen Kosken Metalli Oy:n digitaalisen markkinointiin. Tutkin työssäni kohdeyrityksen jo käyttämiä digitaalisen markkinoinnin kanavia ja etsin ratkaisuja sekä parannusehdotuksia entistä tehokkaamman digitaalisen markkinoinnin mahdollistamiseksi. Kartoitin myös uusia digitaalisen markkinoinnin keinoja, joita yritys ei ole vielä välttämättä kokeillut markkinoinnissaan. Pääasiassa kuitenkin pyrin kehittämään jo käytössä olevia digitaalisen markkinoinnin kanavia (Internet-sivut, Facebook, verkkokauppa) entistä tehokkaimmiksi. Tutkin työssäni yrityksen nettisivuja, Facebook-tiliä ja verkkokauppaa. Lisäksi kerroin yrityksen muista digitaalista markkinointikanavista kuten nettisivu/bannerimainonnasta sekä MTV3 televisiomainoksista. Tämän opinnäytetyön tuloksissa löydettiin tehokkaita ratkaisuja kohdeyrityksen digitaalisen markkinoinnin hyötykäyttöön. Löysin selkeitä parannuksia verkkokauppaan, internetsivuihin sekä Facebookiin.The purpose of the thesis was to find out digital marketing problems for case company and create solutions for solving these problems. Data for this thesis were collected by companys materials and I also used information from literature and Internet. In this thesis I analysed companys facebook account, online shop and website. I also introduce other digital marketing channels, for example MTV3 TV-commercials. The main purpose was create even more effective digital marketing for case company and find out new ways to implement digital marketing

    The development and evaluation of a web-based well-being intervention, for inclusion within an existing health promotion programme, to support and encourage health related lifestyle behaviour change

    Unhealthy lifestyle behaviours constitute a significant burden of disease, globally. Web-based interventions offer a means to support individuals in adopting and maintaining positive healthy lifestyle behaviours to address and reduce this issue. The health behaviour change literature offers several useful theoretical models which aim to explain or predict the likelihood of successful, individual level, lifestyle behaviour change. Indeed, research findings have shown that digital health interventions informed by these models are more likely to be effective. However, in practice adherence and engagement to web-delivered interventions is often critically low and is associated with reduced effectiveness and cost effectiveness. This thesis developed an emotional well-being intervention (ACTivate your Well-being), for inclusion within an existing lifestyle behaviour change programme ‘Champions for Health’. Thirty-eight anticipated end-users and six stakeholders contributed to a three-staged Participatory Design project which led to the development of a twelve-week intervention, based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and a new study website. Development was informed by two systematic literature reviews. Feasibility and acceptability were proven in a cluster randomised control trial (ISRCTN50074817) which recruited 142 participants. The majority (74%) enrolled on at least one lifestyle behaviour change module and health improvements were observed. Almost half (43%) of those randomised to the intervention arm enrolled onto the well-being intervention. Adherence was low (7%), no one completed the full 12-week programme. A randomised control trial (ISRCTN18190978) then evaluated impact on health behaviour change, adherence and engagement, and well-being. 182 participants were recruited. Adherence remained poor (4%) however some completed the full 12-week programme. Almost half (49%) enrolled on a lifestyle behaviour change module and health improvements were observed in three modules. COVID-19 limited evaluation. The ongoing relevance of the intervention and website is evidenced through its inclusion within the Well-being In work – In work support service, Swansea Bay University Health Board

    Lyme disease is a common issue in the Northeast United States, particularly in New Milford, Connecticut. Lyme is a readily treatable condition generally requiring a simple 2-3 week course of antibiotics. However, if patients cannot identify their symptoms and thus, do not come in for treatment, then that puts them at risk for developing chronic Lyme disease and fatal sequelae as a result.
