    Is the left-right scale a valid measure of ideology? Individual-level variation in associations with "left" and "right" and left-right self-placement

    In order to measure ideology, political scientists heavily rely on the so-called left-right scale. Left and right are, however, abstract political concepts and may trigger different associations among respondents. If these associations vary systematically with other variables this may induce bias in the empirical study of ideology. We illustrate this problem using a unique survey that asked respondents open-ended questions regarding the meanings they attribute to the concepts "left" and "right". We assess and categorize this textual data using topic modeling techniques. Our analysis shows that variation in respondents’ associations is systematically related to their self-placement on the left-right scale and also to variables such as education and respondents’ cultural background (East vs. West Germany). Our findings indicate that the interpersonal comparability of the left-right scale across individuals is impaired. More generally, our study suggests that we need more research on how respondents interpret various abstract concepts that we regularly use in survey questions

    Tribalism and Financial Development

    We assess the correlations between tribalism and financial development in 123 countries using data averages from 2000-2010. The tribalism index is used to measure tribalism whereas financial development is measured from perspectives of financial intermediary and stock market developments. The long-term variable is stock market capitalisation while short-run indicators include: private and domestic credits. We find that tribalism is negatively correlated with financial development and the magnitude of negativity is higher for financial intermediary development relative to stock market development. The findings are particularly relevant to African and Middle Eastern countries where the scourge is most pronounced

    C9orf72 Expansion Disrupts ATM-mediated Chromosomal Break Repair

    A hexanucleotide repeat expansion represents the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia, though the mechanisms by which the expansion cause neurodegeneration are poorly understood. We report elevated levels of DNA/RNA hybrids (R-loops) and double-strand breaks (DSBs) in rodent neurons, human cells, and in C9orf72-ALS patient spinal cord tissues. Accumulation of endogenous DNA damage is concomitant with defective ATM-mediated DNA repair signalling and accumulation of protein-linked DNA breaks. We further reveal that defective ATM-mediated DNA repair is a consequence of p62 accumulation, which impairs H2A ubiquitylation and perturbs ATM signalling. Adeno-associated virus- mediated expression of C9orf72-related RNA and dipeptide repeats in the murine central nervous system causes elevated DSBs, ATM defects, and triggers neurodegeneration. These findings identify R-Loops, DSBs, and defective ATM-mediated repair as pathological consequences of C9orf72 expansions, and suggest that C9orf72-linked neurodegeneration is driven, at least in part, by genomic instability

    Increased concentrations of thoron and its decay products were recently found in traditional Chinese clay buildings. Conditions which effect such concentrations were examined in a room which has been rebuilt to scale at Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen, and in the laboratory. It could be shown that increased thoron exhalation rates can also occur with clay of average thorium content. At an increase of the air exchange rate, a strong decrease of the decay product inventory but an increase of the inventory of the thoron itself could be observed. Furthermore, the influence of the aerosol concentration on the unattached fraction of the thoron decay products was determined. Deposition to the walls, floor, and ceiling was investigated and deposition velocities of the decay products were measured. The obtained information was used to set up an indoor compartmental model of thoron and its decay products. With this model, indoor concentrations can be predicted in dependence on ventilation rate, exhalation rate of the building material, and aerosol particle concentration

    A thoron experimental house was constructed in a laboratory room of Helmholtz Zentrum München to perform exposure studies of thoron and its decay products under controlled conditions. The single room house (7.1 m(3)) was built from unfired clay stones and clay plaster. For the plaster of the inner side, the clay was mixed with granite powder enriched with (232)Th. The thoron inventory increased by this means to about 1700 Bq and the progeny potential alpha energy to 130 µJ inside the room. The instrumentation of the experimental house includes active and passive devices for thoron and thoron decay product measurement including attached and unattached progeny, for aerosol particle number and size measurement and characterisation of the climatic conditions. Various parameters as ventilation rate and aerosol concentration can be adjusted. Experiments performed in the experimental house demonstrate the experimental power of this new tool for indoor thoron exposure assessment
