The main purpose of this writing is to review and how to implement two critical thinking models, namely model to generate critical thinking and critical questions – a linear model. These two critical thinking models can be applied in the reading comprehension instruction, since there relationship between reading comprehension and critical thinking is so close. The specific issues being discussed include schema theory as a rational premise for the connection between reading comprehension and critical thinking, cognitive development processes, critical thinking: its nature and definitions, critical thinking: skills and dispositions, and critical thinking and reading comprehension. The results revealed that: (1) there is well established relationship between reading comprehension and critical thinking, (2) schema theory provides a rational premise for that relation, and (3) there is no consensus regarding the definition of critical thinking which might be interpreted as a lack of an accepted framework for critical thinking

Writing the Purpose Statements in Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Method Research

    Get PDF
This paper aims at emphasizing the importance of a purpose statement in a scholarly study. This statement elevates the central idea in a study, and as such it is the most important statement in a research proposal or study. In writing a qualitative purposes statement, a researcher needs to identify a single central phenomenon and to pose a tentative definition for it. The researcher has to employ action words such as “discover,” “develop,” or “understand.” In the process, non-directional language is used, and the inquirer mentions the strategy of inquiry, the participants, and the research site for the study. In a quantitative purpose statement, the researcher mentions the theory being tested as well as the variables and their relationship or comparison. It is important to position the independent variable first and the dependent variable second. The researcher mentions the strategy of inquiry as well as the participant and the research site for the investigation. In some purpose statements, the researcher also defines the key variables used in the study. In a mixed method study, the type of strategy is mentioned as well as a rationale for the type of strategy, such as whether the data are collected concurrently or sequentially. Further, many elements of both good qualitative and quantitative purpose statements are included in the statement. Keywords: Purpose statement, qualitative research, quantitative research, mixed metho

ABSTRACT: The spread of COVID-19 has caused widespread disruption of education, forcing schools to seek urgent solutions to reconfigure traditional education programs for distance learning. The emergency restrictions related to social distancing, gathering, etc., have generated a disruption, resulting in a massive quick shift to distance and online teaching. The disruption of teaching has been highly critical and complex, especially for developing countries due to the lack of technological infrastructure, low Internet access, low level of preparation of teachers and parents to use technology, and lack of learning motivation. This paper aimed at identifying the main teaching practices, challenges, and contextual characteristics that have impacted the adoption and use of online teaching solutions during the COVID-19 outbreak. The paper reached this goal by providing the results of a survey involving 25 English teachers taught at senior high schools. The results revealed that despite a set of challenges faced, the online teaching experience during the pandemic time brought improvements in computer teaching skills and communication with students by using several applications for interactivity.          The study investigated the impact of the flipped classroom on the second semester students in accounting class. Participants (n=50) were assigned to a control group (using traditional instruction) or an experimental group (using flipped classroom model). A quasi-experiment in reading comprehension course on the second semester in academic year 2021-2022 was used. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk test were .083 and .156 for pre-test control group, .200 and .787 for post-test control group, .119 and .185 for pre-test experimental group, and .095 and .101 for post-test experimental group suggesting normal distributions (p>.05). Homogeneity tests based on mean, median, median and with adjusted df, and trimmed mean were .857, .827, .827, and .857 indicating that Homogeneity tests were >.05. Pre-test scores of both groups compared by using independent t-test revealed no significant difference between these groups (.505>.05), while post-test scores of both groups showed significant difference (.000<.05). ANCOVA was conducted to see an interaction between the treatment and the post-test scores in which F=38.642, p<.05 means that the experimental group outperformed the control group. Likert Scale Questionnaire revealed that the students were highly satisfied with the flipped classroom. This also confirmed the difference between the control and experimental groups
